Frostburg State University Senior Brian Anderson Capstone Experience
Frostburg State University Senior Brian Anderson completed his Communication Studies Capstone in the form of a 3 credit practicum this spring for Freestate ChalleNGe Academy under the supervision of Keith Hammond, Placement Coordinator. Anderson is a Communication Studies major, and a Management minor and also played Division III basketball for the past 4 years and served as the team captain for 3 years. He is from Baltimore, MD and is the son of Bill and Carolyn Anderson.
The communication Studies Capstone is the culmination to the Communication Studies major and is a 3-credit practicum or 12 or 15-credit internship working in an approved business setting. Students are required to complete an internship, to apply theories and concepts learned in the Communication Study major in a professional organizational setting to gain real-world, hands on knowledge.
Anderson completed his Capstone internship as a Recruiter and Placement Coordinator. He was responsible for scheduling and presenting to county executives and key enablers to help increase diversity awareness and community awareness about the program. Anderson helped recruit and place at risk youth kids into Freestate ChalleNGe Academy program. This program is a tuition free program which offers at-risk adolescents16 to 18 years old an opportunity to change their future in many ways, culminating with the opportunity to obtain a Maryland High School Diploma. Participants live and work in a controlled military environment, which encourages teamwork and personal growth. Anderson used skills he learned in Communication Study classes to help him better communicate with key enablers, parents and participants applying to the program.
“Working at Freestate ChalleNGe Academy was a great experience. I learned a lot about not only communication but being a recruiter as well. The highlight of my experience I would have say would be seeing all the kids faces when they have been accepted into the program.”
