UPDATE (Aug. 21, 1:31 p.m.)—U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has chosen Perry Hall High, Baltimore County's largest public high school, as the backdrop for a national education announcement.
Baltimore County Superintendent Dr. S. Dallas Dance, Maryland State Superintendent Dr. Lillian M. Lowery, other administrators and nearly 850 language arts teachers are expected to greet Duncan at 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 22, inside the school at 4601 Ebenezer Rd., county schools officials announced.
"Secretary Duncan will kick off a day of professional development and group workshops among the teachers," according to a release.
The event will include group discussions on the U.S. Department of Education’s RESPECT Project.
According to the release:
The RESPECT Project (Recognizing Educational Success, Professional Excellence and Collaborative Teaching) is a national conversation led by the Teacher Ambassador Fellows to help provide input on the effort to reform teaching. The initiative’s goal is to work with teachers, school and district leaders, teachers’ associations and unions, and state and national education organizations to spark a dialogue that results in strong policy and a sustainable transformation of the teaching profession.
"We are very excited to officially welcome Secretary Duncan to Perry Hall High School. It's very exciting for the community and the kids to have someone of his stature visit the school," Principal George Roberts said.
Duncan, a 47-year-old Democrat who holds a bachelor's degree from Harvard University, was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2009. He previously worked seven years as CEO of Chicago Public Schools.
Duncan joined President Barack Obama, while visiting another Baltimore County school, Parkville Middle School and Center of Technology, on Feb. 11, 2011.
What would you like to ask him about the national state of education? Tell us in the comments.

"spark a dialogue....with unions...." good luck with that. that must mean this isn't about standards or offering leadership toward new solutions then. My question for Duncan would be "everyone agrees public education is generally considered as failing americans while costs have skyrocketed...do you plan on providing ANY leadership in mandating higher standards?" Interested to see what he has to say on wednesday since Perry Hall HS is a great example of an overcrowded school in a town with only one HS and many working class families scrape & save to go to private schools to avoid it.

As far as overcrowding, this is more due to corporate greed imho.
Why build another high school when you can build 60 McMansion's on the same property?
Yet we also want our "federal" government to be smaller, and have less of an influence in our day to day lives.
I'm not suggesting the above view is wrong, but understand the results when we shrink government influence in a field like education. It's not an invalid view, but it has it's negatives as well as positives.
As far as providing leadership that's exactly the problem. The federal government CAN NOT provide leadership. They fail. Republican plans, Democratic plans, they are all terrible. Now we have an "educational system" in place where if you pass a multiple guess test (I'm guessing its this type) you are considered a success. In fact, you get more funding when more kids 'pass'. Yet it's not real education.
Compound this with a generation of somewhat absentee parenting, due largely to two parents working and not taking/having the time to take active roles in their children's intellectual development.
Of course, one could successfully argue both parents work because of the cost of living (under ANY administration) because let's be quite honest - corporate greed has been ruining our society for decades now. Far more then "big government" has.
We have plenty of teachers on Patch, I'd love to hear/read their views on this.
