BACK TO SCHOOL: 2011 Best Prices on School Supplies
Retailers are stocked with school supplies, but who has the best prices?
Take a break from the heat and head to your favorite store to pick up school supplies for the 2011-2012 school year. I've heard rumors that stores have limited quantities of some items, so waiting until the last minute may not be in your best interest.
To put retailers to the test, I took Perry Hall Elementary School's second-grade supply list to Target, Staples and Walmart. I then priced out the "Highly Recommended" items on the list to see how major retailers priced these basic supplies.
These items were all priced on Sunday, July 17, using the current in-store promotions and sale prices. I tried to price similar brands and quality.

I found Target to have the widest selection and variety, and Staples seemed to have more "designer" supplies. But when it came down to cost, Walmart had some of the best prices around.
Other local retailers, such as CVS, Rite-Aid, Walgreens and Toys R Us, are also stocked up on school supplies. Be sure to check each store's website, as some are offering special deals.
You can obtain your school supply list by visiting your school's website.
Search "schools" on the Patch Places directory to find your school's website.
Copies are also available in the "Back to School" sections at Walmart and Target.
I have also collected some tips from local mothers to help you keep costs down.
One reader told me she saves a lot of money on school supplies by taking next year's list to the store once the clearance sales start in the fall. She picks up the required items and puts them away for next year.
Another mom reported that she takes the supply list to the Dollar Tree first before hitting the major retail stores. Many of the optional items, like sandwich bags, napkins, cups, stickers, etc. are available at a significant savings.
And one final tip: Give your kids a budget. If you can, pay cash for items so your child understands how much things cost. Give him a specific amount, the supply lists and then let him control how everything is spent. It will teach him a lesson in money management and not break your bank. Of course, you'll have to tailor this to the age and maturity of your own child.
Check back next week for more information about the first day of school.

I am a "Staples Rewards" member & received a 15% off card for school supplies in the mail a couple weeks ago. Office Depot has a reward program also. Both usually send out coupons for certain percent off items (excluding technology usually) and of course look online for coupons for them in their online Sunday circulars. Don't forget to recycle your inkjet cartridges at either store for reward dollars. You don't have to buy all your supplies all at once but get them as they go on sale when you plan on going to that store (w/ a coupon of course : )

Brad, thanks for your comment about the Staples coupon. I never received one to Staples. However, in today's mail I received a $5 off coupon for Target, themed for Back to School supplies.
Also great tips about the inkjet cartridges!
