Baltimore County Records Lower Homicide Rate Than 2011

Police report the majority of cases in 2012 involved victims who knew the person accused of killing them.

Baltimore County closed out 2012 with a reduction in the number of homicides compared to the previous year.

The county's 23 homicide cases was seven less than in 2011 and represents a more than 20 percent decrease when compared to the five-year average of homicides in the county.

In a majority of cases last year, the victim knew the person accused in his or her death. Twelve victims were killed in domestic-related incidents, three were killed by acquaintances, and three were killed in non-random, drug-related incidents, according to a statement issued by the Baltimore County Police Department.

In two cases, there was no apparent relationship between the suspect and the victim.

Three other cases remain open. Police do not know if there is any relationship between victim and suspect in those cases.

County police continue to record a clearance rate on homicides that is higher than the national average.

In 2012, homicide detectives cleared nearly 86.9 percent of the cases—just slightly lower than its five year average of 89.8 percent, according to police statistics.

The clearance rate for homicides nationwide in 2011 was 64.8 percent, according to statistics compiled by the FBI.

Crime down in our areas? Imagine that! How are Patch alarmists and ragemongers going to reconcile this?

Here's some other fun data - crime statistics from 2010 to 2011. Note the Perry Hall/WM area almost all crimes were down in 2011 , some by a good deal. Drug arrests were the only area that went up by a noticable amount.

2009 area crime statistics - well, they are worse then 2010's...

Summary: Great job BCPD, and to the doom and gloomers suggesting the area is going downhhill - sorry to disappoint :)

I am sure all the teeth gnashers and hand wringers around here will come up with their usual conspiracy theories about how the County is secretly under reporting their numbers.....

"City killings up to 217 as gun violence falls"
"As the Police Department's leadership changed, the city recorded 217 killings, about 10 percent more than the 197 in 2011"
" Police statistics released Tuesday show that total crime and most categories of gun violence continued to decline."

More guns less crime? California is experiencing less gun crime and more gun sales.

"The FBI said it recorded 2.8 million background checks during the month, surpassing the mark set in November of 2 million checks. The number was up 49 percent over December 2011, when the FBI performed a then-record 1.9 million checks."

Nationally gun crime is dropping. More guns less crime? Sure seems to be the case. If anyone has any other reasons feel free to post them.

The "More Guns Less Crime" myth was debunked years ago.

Prove it. Care to offer any other reasons Steve? What MAY be the causes?

The Center for Media and Democracy? To debunk Lott? That's as rich as it gets.
I will use reliable sources, not those far left Soros funded fascists.

Still no suggestions on the more guns less crime results? If not more guns and other factors then what factors?

If more guns truly equalled less crime then the Unites States would be the safest country in the world.....and it's not. The only result when more guns are introduced into a populace are more gun related suicides.

Harvard says your wrong Steve. I guess Harvard as a source is not to your liking either?

"Nations with higher gun ownership rates, however, do not have higher murder or suicide rates than those with lower gun ownership. Indeed many
high gun ownership nations have much lower murder rates. "
Harvard study."

Harvard Study: Gun Control Is Counterproductive.
"Startling as the foregoing may seem, it represents the crossnational
norm, not some bizarre departure from it. If the mantra
“more guns equal more death and fewer guns equal less
death” were true, broad based cross‐national comparisons
should show that nations with higher gun ownership per capita
consistently have more death. Nations with higher gun
ownership rates, however, do not have higher murder or suicide
rates than those with lower gun ownership. Indeed many
high gun ownership nations have much lower murder rates.
Consider, for example, the wide divergence in murder rates
among Continental European nations with widely divergent
gun ownership rates."

"The non‐correlation between gun ownership and murder
is reinforced by examination of statistics from larger numbers
of nations across the developed world. Comparison of
“homicide and suicide mortality data for thirty‐six nations
(including the United States) for the period 1990–1995” to
gun ownership levels showed “no significant (at the 5%
level) association between gun ownership levels and the total
homicide rate.”41 Consistent with this is a later European
study of data from 21 nations in which “no significant correlations
[of gun ownership levels] with total suicide or homicide
rates were found.”
