UPDATE: Grass Too Tall in Perry Hall?
Find out who to call about unruly turf in the Perry Hall area.
UPDATE (June 26, 4:50 p.m.)—The grass along Honeygo Boulevard's median strip was mowed by county contractors on Tuesday morning.
See the article, PHOTOS: Perry Hall Speaks, Honeygo Gets Mowed, for details.

UPDATE (June 25, 2:17 p.m.)—Shirley Smith is fed up with tall, bushy grass near her neighborhood—especially when it happens to be growing on county-owned property.
"In Perry Hall, we pay too much in taxes to put up with this eyesore. It just looks terrible," said Smith, who lives off Honeygo Boulevard, between Joppa and Belair roads.
Her biggest concern is overgrown median strips along Honeygo.
"It's tall and brown. People throw trash in there. The next thing you know, we'll have rats," she said.
A worker for the Baltimore County Property Management Division told Patch that grass on county property is generally mowed every two weeks, but residents should call the county to report any neglected areas.
When it comes to public property in need of a trim, residents should call 410-887-3827, and an operator within the county executive's office will direct them to the appropriate constituent services representative. If the problem is on private property, residents should call 410-887-3351 for Code Inspections and Enforcement.
In either case, residents should be prepared to provide the address of the problem area, so inspectors know where to check it out.
County Councilman David Marks told Patch that residents could also contact his office at 410-887-3384 for assistance. His office recently helped homeowners get Asbury Park cut, he said.
Marks added that there have been positive comments from residents about the mowing of ballfields this year.
Smith said she hopes for a quick response from officials about the tall grass.
"It looks like we don't care, but people in Perry Hall do care," she said.
What are some of the most overgrown public property areas in Perry Hall? Tell us in the comments.

I would rather the county let it grow, save the cost of fuel and manpower to cut it...Taller grass filters out more pollution and crates wildlife habitat. Let it grow, who said that the areas by highways and medians needed to be golf courses anyway?

Mike,
I would prefer that it be cut, as it makes for a nicer look for our community. But, the only way I could see your side is if all similar areas throughout the county are handled exactly the same way - downtown Towson, Monkton, Timonium, Cockeysville, Glyndon, etc. I haven't toured the county lately to check it out, but one look at the public areas and even the Beltway bridges will tell you that different areas receive different treatments, and funding levels that go along with it.

Tall grass isn't so much a problem. It's the weeds that come with it. Thistle is a noxious weed and shouldn't be allowed to go to seed. We live by an abandoned orchard and it's FULL of it.

If people contact our office, we will try to help. Just recently, the homeowners association next to Asbury Park asked for help, and the grass got cut.
I had already asked about Honeygo Boulevard before even seeing this article, and that should be done soon. As an aside, I have heard positive reports about mowing at ballfields this spring.

Mr. Marks, I actually did call last week on a different issue and talked to Paula. I hope I got her name right. She was very nice and said she would look into it. So, I guess we'll see what happens.

The real surprise is that the median strip hasn't been bought and converted into a Rite-Aid or CVS. Seriously, perception is reality - cut the grass!

I Agree that the county and state seem to have cut back in their grass cutting efforts and the trimming I don't think ever gets done. That teaches us what happens when you supported Bartenfelder and Ehrlich in the last election. I guess the window in Blevins office on Belair Road at the Beltway doesn't face the Beltway interchange. That area has been cut twice so far this year and never trimmed.

The county came up with a brainstorm idea of putting a circle on Seven Courts Rd but do not maintain it. The safety factor has worked but it is an eyesore for the community. Previously it was maintained by a landscaping company but they did not take care of it over the last year and removed their sign last week(week of 6/17/2012). Hopefully someone from Baltinmore COunty Gov will read this and dispatch a crew to make it look nice.

To be honest, that landscaping company never took good care of the roundabout since it was built. It definitely needs to be updated.
But how about the community, or PHIA look to take care of it? I don't know that the County has to do everything. It might be nice to have the residents involved.

The County used to have a large enough maintenance staff. SInce they let so many go in the recent retirement, they now have to contract out some of the work. So now they have to go through a paper-work process for every job that the regular employees can't do.

So let me understand this... This all all about appearance, not function... Hmm sounds like one of the least important functions of government, particularly in an age when we have tWrouble paying for the important things like schools, fire fighters, police etc. get real people

The appearance issue is not exactly trivial - for the locals' community pride as well as first and lingering impressions by visitors. I, for one, would rather not have my community looking all ragged. If there was a design strategy that allowed free growth to look attractive, it might be nice - but that is not the design we have, and a change would involve replanting, at least (ka-ching, ka-ching)

Sure you need to cut them when they pose a problem with blocking ones vision , or signs, or when there are power line issues, but if we need to cut spending (and we do) this seems to be a no brainier

This is not a problem specific to Perry Hall. In recent years the state also cut back, no pun intended, on the grass cutting. You can drive down the interstates at some points and the grass in the medians and sides of road is 3 feet tall. While it may look messy at times, I don't think it is a newsworthy pressing issue. Tall grass in a median strip on a major street does not lead to rats and the downfall of the community. It is the people tossing trash on the ground that does this. If it's that much of an issue that is making it hard for you to sleep at night, go cut it yourself, I am sure the county would not care.

I have completely noticed that too! I just mentioned to some people recently if they noticed the grass in parks, medians and other state and county properties aren't cut as much as they used to be. One of the parks locally I frequent with my dog I have noticed the grass has gotten over 8 inches tall in well used areas recently.

@ Jeff, perhaps you, like most folks, were unaware that the landscaping company DONATED their time, labor and materials to maintain the circle at Seven Courts for several years. Due to community apathy and lack of community interest, they did recently remove their sign. Get the facts before you make inaccurate statements please.
Jon

Heather, can you elaborate on the "community apathy and lack of community interest"? I'm not sure what you are referring to. I think everyone in the area is interested in a Roundabout that looks good, and I never saw anything saying that there was a need for something to happen. So I'm not sure where the apathy and lack of interest is coming from.
I would love to know if there was something that I missed there.

One of the things I need to work on is this concept of paying attention to the details. Specifically, when I'm told that the initial post asked for opinions. Actually, the exact words were "What are some of the most overgrown public property areas in Perry Hall? Tell us in the comments" not whether you find nature offensive. (OBTW - you can look it up)
This topic has probably been beat to death, and perhaps there will be more frequent grass-cutting in our future. Note to county: leave the area around Mike Lurz's to grow with wild abandon - it will keep him happy.

Food for thought: Tall, brown (dried) out grass and weeds are very dangerous when it comes to brush fires. Two/ three years ago there were many roadside grass and brush fires along rt 100, 97, and 295. Putting out these fires cost much more than just cutting the grass once a week.

Yes, almost all roadside fires begin because of irresponsible people throwing cigarettes out the window and sometimes by lightening and such. However, shorter grass does not burn as fast as tall grass does. Less kindling = less chances.

One word, folks-Rats. Tall grass draws them, and they will soon come to your house and shed, eating your birdseed and getting into your garbage cans. No, tall grass is not attractive, but when it becomes a public health issue, it is a serious problem.

This is true, but with fast food trash being jettisoned, they have food, and tall grass for shelter. Maybe by elimating the food and the shelter, we can keep PH rat-free.

Mike: This opens up a different and similarly annoying topic:
Slackers who don't have garbage cans. Holy cow, seriously on my street a good 50% of people don't own a garbage can. They just throw bags of trash out on Monday night. What do they do with the trash all week? I know they don't recycle half as much as we do.
Those trash bags, I am just going to guess here, just sit on their back porch/deck all week until trash day. Not good, but another seemingly unattainable level of common decency too much of the gen pop can't seem to get their heads around.
Someone else even had the county send out warnings about it - which made us laugh because it wasn't us who reported it.

Mike-I live next to an open field, which is adjacent to a fast food restaurant, ergo both trash and potentially long grass. All I can tell you is that when the grass is cut regularly, the rats go away. When it is not, the rats come back. There is always trash, so that is a constant.

If you don't use it, let it grow.
