Honeygo Village Center Seeking to Replace My Cafe

The Perry Hall shopping center will likely fill the space with another restaurant.

My Cafe closed earlier this month, and Honeygo Village Center is seeking a new restaurant to fill the space.

Jose Santana, a Segall Group leasing agent, said he is working to find a new tenant for 5005 Honeygo Center Drive. Unlike most Perry Hall shopping centers, vacancies have been few and far between at the relatively new 9-year-old Honeygo Village Center.

"It's already set up as a restaurant, so we're hoping to bring a new flavor to the center," Santana said.

Former My Cafe owner Glen Spurlock also confirmed with Patch that his restaurant had closed. The diner-style eatery had won the Readers' Choice award last March for Best Breakfast. It featured specialty pancakes and other breakfast items.

Previously, the space had been held by a multi-ethnic diner called Cousins Cafe.

What type of restaurant would you like to see at Honeygo Village Center? Tell us in the comments.

It's actually a shame, because the place got sparkling reviews (see the Patch page for it, it earned a Readers Choice award).

I think the reality is we just have (in general) too many restaurant options available. It's not an economy issue, because I see TONS of people out to eat on weekends when we go (I love eating out). I've seen plenty of people the past few years as well.

Honestly though, there are about 3 times more 'great places to eat' then I need. Places like this get left behind from folks like me because after - I dunno - 6 or 7 restaurants there's really no room in the rotation for more

It also could be a management issue. Seen many places that do a business however if you can't manage money properly it doesn't matter how popular your place is.

Well now that a rib/barbeque place is going in at Joppa Corners, the one thing lacking is a great bagel place!

I know the place got good reviews. However, I went there several times this summer for breakfast only to be told that several items on the menu were unavailable due to "shipping delays." I hold no animosity toward the owners; the food they had was certainly good. I wonder, though, if maybe they needed someone to help manage inventory and such.

At any rate, a bagel place like the old Classic Bagel would be great.

There used to be a GREAT bagel place in PH at the intersection of SIlver Spring and Belair Rd in that shopping center where Goodwill is and the Harp. They had really good food. I stopeed there nearly every morning for a Bagel breakfast sandwich and a dozen bagels for the office. I dont' know why they closed up, since it seemed they were always busy. Marty Ford was the owner and he has years of experience in the food business. He is a classy guy as well. I hope he will jump back into PH with anothe3r bagel place, of maybe even an honest to goodness Italian Restaurant.

Yeah I went in to try it for the first time and the only bread they only had rye bread because of shipping delays and had no "to go" coffee cups. I walked over to Dunkin Donuts for the coffee. I was not impressed with this place.

Voter: We actually have an old take out menu from that place you are taking about. The name escapes me now as I'm obviously at work.

We bought our home in 2002, and the lady who owned it was living alone, and she clearly didn't cook much.

Tough to compete with Dunkin' Donuts with a drive-thru.

No it's not. Donuts are terrible for you, and their bagels (and egg/cheese 'products') are third rate.

I beg to differ. Classic Bagels was consistently crowded in the morning and during lunch, especially on weekends. I used t ogo there 2-3 days a week and almost always had to stand in line to get my bagels and coffee. Their demise came when they tried to go more upscale, serving dinner and then serving beer and wine. They opened later in the morning (too late for me to stop there) and likely lost a lot of loyal customers.

You may be right, but what I can tell you is this: The few times my family and I have gone to Bagel Bistro here: http://parkville.patch.com/listings/bagel-bistro-2 on the weekends, the line is OUT THE DOOR.

We usually go there when we get the oil changed in one of our vehicles. Saturday or Sunday, slammed.

I go to Bagel Bistro on my way to work, on average, 2.5 times a week for breakfast.

I don't think they'll be going out of business anytime soon.

Oh, and on Evets note: Bagel Bistro does breakfast and lunch. They close at 3pm every day.

It's funny, because for months I always thought it was closed. It took forever for me to finally realize it was actually in business.

I enjoy Towson Hot Bagels too. Best bacon/egg/cheese bagels I've had here. I just don't live in Towson. I'll hit there once every two weeks.

The Bagel Bistro on Joppa Rd near Baskin Robbins has been there for many years. They have the best variety of bagels (love garden veggie) and the sandwiches are great. That is my "go to" place for bagels. I believe they open at 6AM

No shot of getting a bagel place, the Dunkin Donuts owner won't allow it (and yes he has a say). He squashed a 7-Eleven going in where the High's was because they thought it would hurt their coffee and donut business. True Story!

Bagel shop is a great idea. If it can't go in Honeygo, go down the street to the corner of Belair Road in that empty new shopping center.

Maybe one on each side of the Rite Aid. I don't understand the attraction to Walgreens, but I guess someone shops there since they just built a giant one. Isn't there one like 2 miles up Belair Road? Why do we have so many of them?

Does every article on the Patch need to turn into a Drug Store comment section. We get it people, you dont like Drugstores and you think Perry Hall has too many. I think we get your point! Like talking to my kids when they dont get their way!

Jeff, it sounds like you have a headache. Walgreens, CVS, and Rite Aid have aspirin. There is a CVS, Rite Aid, and Walgreens right out there on Belair Road. Pretty close to each other. You could probably walk to either one of them.

Paul...hilarious. You know, I did buy my tylenol this morning from Giant because, well, Walgreens, Rite Aid and CVS were just too tedious to drive to LOL. Now that my headache is gone, I'm going to find some other articles to make drug store comments on. Wish I could tag Jeff so he'd be sure to find it.

I vote for a bagel place too! I remember the one "Voter" mentioned. I really miss that place. I would never go to Dunkin Donuts for a bagel because more than likely I'd come out with donuts. The new bagel place would also need to serve awesome coffee.

Somewhat related note: My wife and I were having a spirited debate on the topic of "too many restaurants in Perry Hall/White Marsh".
Here's my question: Do any of you know what the standard is for what a business calls a "regular customer"?

What I mean is, early in this thread, I speculated that this area has too many choices for people to consistently visit.
I don't believe this is truly a recession issue, because I see no shortage of people eating out when we are out.

Yesterday my wife was rattling off the places we eat, and some of them I was like "Well we only go there once every 3-4 months...to me, that doesn't count as a regular customer a business can count on.
If you ran a restaurant, what would be the minimum for a 'regular' customer? Someone who went once every month? Two months? Something else?

I hope this made sense.

My point was that there are dozens of (I'm sure) great places to eat that we'll never ever visit. It has nothing to do with the restaurant, it has to do with the fact we tend to hit the same 4-5 places, with maybe 3-4 more in the secondary/once every three months department. I don't believe we'd be considered "good' customers economically to this second category of restaurant we ate at.

I know that the definition of a heavy user in the fast food segment is 5 or more visits per month.

I know what you are saying. Sometimes we try to think about where we want to eat and it's like over the past several months we've tried all the local fare. I don't consider myself a regular at any place since we use such a "wide rotation".

There was a good bagel place at this same location when the Honeygo Village Center first opened. I was there almost every week. I thought they were doing well, but then they suddenly closed and were replaced by the Cousins Cafe.

If a bagel shop is not possible, perhaps a place with quality Mexican food would work well. Or maybe a good bakery. We haven't had a good bakery in Perry Hall since the old St. Francis bakery was open at the current Cannella's location.

There IS an outstanding Mexican place off of Philadelphia and Allender, for what its worth.

http://www.tacolovegrill.com/

In my mind, it's every bit as good as any of the small Mexican places you can find downtown. Better then Don Pablos or anything else around the PH/WM area that I'm aware of, and it's not close.

How about a Firehouse Subs - they donate back to the local volunteer fire company in the area and their food is really good - much better than Subway which I always thought as good until I went to a Firehouse Sub place with a friend. Everything is fresh made daily and after you order they bring it directly to your table.

A bakery would be nice as well. No where in the area can you get fresh baked goods. I always have to to to Fenwick's on Harford Road and the parking is horrible.

As I understand it, Yia Yia's Bakery is a spin off from the Double TT diner chain. Their main location is on Phialdelphia Road by King Avenue. They have opened a couple of sattelite locations, apparently tied in with a florist (I think Raimondi's). The desserts they prepare are really beautiful; unfortunately, the taste does not match the look. In my opinion, their desserts taste and chew like plastic. Stick with Fenwick.
