How Far Would You Drive for Higher End Groceries?

The new Abingdon Wegmans has advertised to Perry Hall residents.

Abingdon and Perry Hall aren't even in the same county, but you probably wouldn't guess that by looking at the sale papers for the new Wegmans.

"Food shopping will never be the same," reads a colorful, coupon-filled mailer sent to an unknown number of Perry Hall residents. No doubt that some people were enticed by the flashy grand opening sales and promotions, as well as Wegmans' reputation for all things gourmet.

Perry Hall has a Safeway, two Weis stores, a Mars and a Nature's Fresh, but how far are you willing to drive for higher end chains?

Here is my list of the approximate miles you'll have to travel to get your foodie fix.

Wegmans, Abingdon 8.5 miles

Wegmans, Hunt Valley

11.8 miles

Trader Joe's, Towson

10.3 miles

Fresh Market, Towson

7.4 miles

MOM's Organic Grocery, Timonium

11 miles

Whole Foods Market, Harbor East

15.7 miles

Anything is better than the awful Weis... Prices through the roof, poor selection and sub-par customer service.

As much as we love our Safeway, the long lines are now getting much worse and the quality / selection just isn't as good as a Wegman's or Whole Foods. Let's hope a similar store comes to Perry Hall!

Nothing is even in the same class of Wegman's around here.

Honestly, the customer service and line lengths at Safeway registers are downright deplorable.

Weis is mediocre at best, provides nothing that Safeway can't.
Mars? Food Lion? lol. no.

Another note: Although the Hunt Valley is only 2.5 miles or so farther, it's actually much longer driving. They were BRILLIANT when they placed Wegman's in Abingdon because it's literally a stone's throw from I95. Not only will they get customers from Perry Hall/White Marsh area, but they'll pull folks from further North as well.

Don't forget about Nature's Fresh! They just moved to a new location right off of Belair Road. Just south of the Belair Rd/Forge Rd intersection.

They actually open? If so, they might want to update their signage. I looked two weeks ago, and they looked closed(it was a sunday). Signage indicated "Coming soon".

John, I added a link to Nature's Fresh. Thanks for the reminder! Is the store going to have a grand opening event?

Tim- Yes they're now open. They opened about a week ago.

Emily- I'm sure they will at some point. I don't believe a date has been set.

I will absolutely drive to the new Wegman's. My family has been making the hike to Hunt Valley Wegman's 2x per month for the last year. We started getting frustrated with Safeway because everytime we go, they have one check out line open, and you have to wait forever, not easy with the kids in tow. I wish they would bring a whole foods to Perry Hall/White Marsh, but till then, I'll start making the drive to Abingdon on a regular basis.

Yeah see, it's a funny thing. Wegman's processes about 40 people checking out at once - with the use of like 15-20 cashiers. Seriously. The times we've gone to Wegman's and had to wait in line behind more then two people, well, I can count them on one hand. Sunday morning included.

Definitely agree about the Safeway, the lines are ridiculous and my daughter and I get there around 8:00 am on the weekends, but I am not that interested in driving further for a better shopping experience. As a working mom, I have got limited time on the weekends.

I go to the Whole Foods in Mount Washington. You couldn't pay me to approach the parking disaster that is Whole Foods Harbor East. Wegman's is ok I guess. I'm blessed to work in Jessup, where there's a MOM's and a Trader Joes within about 3 miles of each other.

I'm looking forward to checking out Wegman's, I've never shopped there before. Not waiting in line sounds wonderful.

once you go Wegman's you'll never go back.
It's interesting to note that when the Hunt Valley store opened several years ago, Safeway and Weis "Wegmanized" their stores by putting in hardwood floors, adding the small shopping carts and and olive bar. only a superficial facelift.
