Kimco Talking to 'Several' Grocery Stores to Replace Superfresh

A new tenant for the Perry Hall Square Shopping Center property is expected to be finalized by the new year.

The Perry Hall Square Shopping Center lost one of its main anchor tenants last July with the closure of Superfresh.

Four months later, Gregory Reed, assistant director of the shopping center's management company, Kimco Realty, said the company is still in negotiations to replace the store.

"We're still talking to several grocery stores and have not finalized a lease with anyone yet," Reed said. "But I still think we're on track to announce it by the first of the year."

During a community meeting in October, Reed said the location would probably not be filled with a Trader Joe's, Weis, Safeway or Giant.

What store would you like to replace Superfresh? Tell us in the comments.

Weis, Safeway and Giant already have locations close by. A Trader Joe's would have been nice since the one in Towson has horrific parking. A Whole Foods would be great too.

So, wait...Kimco doesn't want to tear this down and build apartments? Hello Kimco? Remember Wilde lake Village Green? Giant has been gone for, what 5-6 years now?

Why NOT a Trader Joe's?? We need something different around here!! We don't need another Giant, Weis or Safeway or another drugstore!! Trader Joe's would bring in a lot of customers to that shopping center (let's face it, that shopping center needs something to draw customers in!!)

Kimco is also finalizing plans for a new tenant that will take several spaces at the main shopping center. I have been in active communication with Mr. Reed and thank him for his responsiveness!

I would love to see us get a Whole Foods, their other Baltimore locations aren't convenient to Perry Hall at all.

Sad truth is people at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods assume we're all suckers enough to go out of our way to go to their existing stores.

Me, I simply don't go to either. I don't have the time/will to go someplace I'm not going to be able to completely grocery shop. This is why I'll travel to Wegman's instead. Even then, I didn't visit Wegman's when it was only Owings Mills. I have better things to do with my weekend time then commute 30 minutes each way for groceries. It's bad enough I have to commute that much to work 5 days a week.

I sure hope somehow I can be proven wrong, and one of them comes here.

Hunt Valley, not Owing Mills.

I agree, I don't go there unless I happen to be in the area. I love Wegman's as well, however I found it kind of insulting when I got a flyer in the mail telling me that "my" Wegman's was now open... in Abingdon?? I'm not going to drive 20 min to do my regular grocery shopping.

Whole Foods for sure. It will never happen in PH---and traffic would be a nightmare.

A traffic nightmare is exactly what Perry Hall Shopping center needs....(this is not sarcasm)

A Trader Joe's would be a welcome addition as far as I am concerned; however, it seems like wishful thinking since Kimco already stated that Trader Joe's is not coming our way. I have a gut feeling the new store will be an Aldi's and personally I am not a fan and will not be shopping there if that is the case.

As much as I don't want something new to come in and run the risk of failing, that's probably what we're going to get. It doesn't help anything, or anyone save for a small niche group...and that's just not a long term sustainable model for success.

Aldi is an AMAZING priced store, with good quality products...It would be very convenient, however we already have 3 within 15 minutes of the area so it wouldnt make much sense.

Audrey - My wife does, and while the "savings" may be negated by the longer drive, we also do it because we're tired of supporting a Weis that continues to be run poorly and benefit solely by its location.

We used to shop Safeway, and still do in a pinch for quick trips...but it annoys me to no end how they are almost always short staffed on cashiers.

10 minutes to get my groceries, 15 minutes waiting to check out. Still unacceptable.

Couldn't agree more. I have a love/hate relationship with that Safeway. I think the food selection and produce are the best Perry Hall has to offer, yet the lack of cashiers even at 8:00 am on a Saturday morning drives me bananas! I can't even find a manager to complain about it.

i would love to see moms organic grocery in there. you really do not know what you are missing until you try it. one opened in the area where i work in lutherville and the food is so fresh. plus what they don't sell goes to the food bank before it expires. and they have electric post for the hybred cars to hook up to. really great.

I would hate to see another of the same type of grocery stores we have all over, we have around 6 large grocery stores that are generally the same, mainly competing with price. I'd rather see a store with more quality, healthy, even local foods, like Whole Foods or Wegman's. We don't have any larger grocery stores that are convenient to PH that have a significant selection of organic and natural foods (especially meats), it's really a shame. I will say though, that I'm really happy to see Nature's Fresh on Bel Air Road, and I suppose a store like Whole Foods might take business away from a store like that, which would be the one downside.

I agree, I would like to see a natural organic supermarket around this area as well. Although Nature's Fresh has a bigger location on Bel Air Road, their selection is still very small. They don't carry any fresh fruits and vegetables and some of their prices are incredibly high compared to Whole Foods or Trader Joe's.

carol dont suggest an aldi, last time I did i was told that perry hall isnt ghetto like all the other area;s with aldis. I my self would love to see an aldi. As for trader joe and whole foods. the area doesnt have the right income to support that type of store.

Aldis.... isn't that the store that creates its aisles out of the packaging/boxes that the produce arrives in. Nothing says class, or up-and-coming like an aisle assembled out of cardboard boxes. Trader Joe's is great, but isnt the square footage too much for them to consider?

I would vote for Whole Foods or Trader Joes. There is very limited opportunity to buy organic foods in Perry Hall and it would be a great benefit to get grass fed beef. A Giant or Aidis is not really a change or something different in comparison to what is already here.

Whole Foods or Harris Teeter would be a WELCOME addition to the area!

I have ventured into a Harris Teeter and found it much like any ordinary supermarket. I wouldn't compare Harris Teeter to Whole Foods but that's just my opinion.

Maybe they should open another liquor store or drug store. Doesn't seem like there are enough of those in the area, lol. Whatever it is, I hope it's something that will bring business into the area, or at least keep locals shopping in the area. Do we really need another "regular" grocery store? We already have Safeway, 2 Weis, Mars, Giant...maybe that is why Superfresh didn't survive. I don't pretend to have the answer but hope something special comes in...tired of seeing all of the good, trendy, new stores go to Abingdon and Bel Air. Maybe it's time to bulldoze that shopping center and build something new?

That is a great idea...if not Kohls why not another store that is not food related...We definitely have enough grocery stores and carry out food places.

I agree with Karen, forget the regular grocery stores, we have tons of them. It's a huge location where a Kohl's could do very well. How many of us drive to Lutherville or Belair to do our shopping. Kinda sick of having to drive 20+ minutes when Perry Hall could have it available here.

Theres a Kohls, right next to Target, 5-8 minutes away right on Martin Blvd...and you dont have to deal with 695 or Belair Traffic!

If there were some way to fit a Walgreens and a CVS in there it would fit right in with the rest of PH! Maybe they could leave some room for a tanning salon too...
