A two-vehicle collision at Belair Road and Sunshine Avenue, in the heart of Kingsville, caused at least one injury late Monday afternoon, police said.
Officers remained on the scene along U.S. Route 1 as of 4:30 p.m. Drivers should expect delays extending into rush hour.
The accident involved two vehicles and one person was expected to be transported to a hospital with injuries, an officer at the Parkville police precinct said.

Does anyone know what happened? I've seen some very bad driving at that intersection lately, especially people turning left onto Sunshine, not realizing that they need to exit onto Jerusalem then turn left.

Yes, this intersection is terrible and ridiculous. I live within hearing distance of it. When the previous fixes were done in 2005, they refused to really fix the problem, which is the 24 degree intersection, just added a lane on Bradshaw and put in that stupid "jug-handle" for a left turn onto Sunshine. Wouldn't be surprised if this accident were a result of that bad design. Part of the problem is the incorrect signage. I've written the state several times and they just insist it's okay. Anyone can see that it is wrong.
As for the no left turn onto Sunshine, when you get to the actual intersection going north on Belair Rd, there is no sign visible. And they continue to allow dangerous left turns in and out of JSI, which never complied with a requirement to close off part of their continuous driveway..
I have a file on this intersection going back 15 years.

The accident was actually at Belair and Jerusalem.

Thanks for the update. Some of the problems at this intersection: the left turn from Jerusalem onto Belair Rd., the high-speed exit ramp from Belair onto Jerusalem, the right-turn-on-red from Bradshaw onto Belair where US Transportation guidelines say there should not be one, the no left turn on red sign on the pole by JSI (does anyone know whether it's intended for traffic on Sunshine or traffic on Belair?) And all the signs that are facing the wrong way!

Sorry, I meant the no right turn on red sign on the pole at JSI. Any opinions on what it means?

I always assumed it was for Sunshine. It seems to me that when you're sitting at the light there that it's facing traffic on Sunshine.

The stretch between the gunpowder rivers is treacherous. I avoid the left lanes at all costs and never try to make a left onto Belair rd.

Why don't they eliminate the "garden" and use it improve the situation?l

People simply drive too fast rushing home in that stretch. Low visibility spots and roads crossing at 45 degree angles makes it more visually confusing when entering that area. I say eliminate the Jerusalem Rd exit at the car lot. Cut half the garden away raising visibility and add a northbound "turn right only" short lane.

It's actually much worse than a 45 degree angle. It's 24 degrees between Belair and Sunshine and 156 degrees between Belair/Bradshaw. The feds say that any thing less than 75 degrees or greater than 105 should be no right turn on red.

Mike. Good point! I never knew that about the 75/105... makes sense though. Thanks.

The engineering at this location is pitiful. I live off of Jerusalem Road and everyday is like taking a chance with your life. There needs to be a left turn lane off of Belair Road onto Sunshine Avenue and a right turn only onto Jerusalem/Bradshaw Rds..I have heard that the triangle had problems due to the old Drug Store at that location and possible contamination and that the church on the n/e corner had grave sites too close to Belair Road to widen on their side. A change for public safety sake has to be made. Currently cars are turning onto Jerusalem Rd from n/b Belair and making a left onto Bradshaw and then a right back onto Belair Rd to avoid the red light and get ahead of other traffic, adding to this hazard area. A change is needed as fast as possible.

The solution to what you describe is 2 things:
1. Eliminate the right turn on red at the end of Bradshaw at Belair
2. Put back the left turn from north-bound Belair onto Sunshine with proper staggered signals
The other changes needed:
1. Prohibit left or right turns at the end of Jerusalem onto Belair (close it off so it's only for entry from Belair)
2. Fix the no right turn on red sign on the pole by JSI so it is clear that it applies to traffic on Sunshine.
3. Add no right turn on red for south-bound traffic on Belair.
and one way or another, fit in left turn lanes in both directions on Belair.

I don't know anything about angles and haven't memorized the signs at the intersection as I don't travel up Belair Road too frequently. All I know is on Sunday, my husband and I were almost hit going north in the right lane heading to Bel Air when 2 cars and a box truck suddenly realized they couldn't take a left onto Sunshine and tried to exit onto Jerusalem in front of us. Thank heaven for good brakes and reflexes or we would have been another statistic for the books.

Barb, I think I was right there when that happened, somewhere around 6:30! The truck cut over from the left lane, and thankfully the second car waited and stopped in the left lane until the right lane traffic cleared. I was shocked that there was not an accident.

I usually have to go through this intersection on my way to work, but I've been avoiding it for a few months now because traffic is treacherous through there. I take Mt. Vista these days, so much less traffic.

Ya that is a tough place. The church and land adjoining I believe is protected for historic value. That church moved from their original Baltimore Town (Rumsey Island, MD) site around 1800 or so to that location. They even moved the grave sites and bodies which date from around 1680-1800 to that graveyard on the corner of Jerusalem and Belair. Geez... even the old white oak tress in that graveyard are over 4-500 years old.
That corner is not ever going to be expanded or erased.
Tough spot...tough solutions, but that stupid garden triangle can go for better visibility at least.

For those who want to see something done about this intersection, come to the Greater Kingsville Civic Association meeting sometime and tell the board that you want it to deal with community issues such as this. The web site is GKCA.INFO
