Legendary Orioles Manager Earl Weaver Dies, Baltimore Area Reacts

Share your reaction to Earl Weaver's legacy in the comments.

Earl Weaver's sudden death at 82 years old has rocked the Baltimore area and baseball aficionados nationwide.

Weaver died around 2 a.m. Saturday while on board an Orioles fantasy cruise in the Caribbean. His wife, Marianna, was at his side when he succumbed to a heart attack, the New York Daily News reported.

The news broke while many fans were headed to the Orioles' annual FanFest at the Baltimore Convention Center, across the street from Camden Yards. Weaver's career and what he meant to Baltimore was on the lips of many fans and players. Weaver's No. 4 hung above the discussion panel stage, and his jersey was posted on the left side of the stage.

Weaver's Baltimore Sun obituary described the Hall of Famer as a "cantankerous baseball wizard."

Orioles managing partner Peter Angelos released the following statement:

Earl Weaver stands alone as the greatest manager in the history of the Orioles organization and one of the greatest in the history of baseball. This is a sad day for everyone who knew him and for all Orioles fans. Earl made his passion for the Orioles known both on and off the field. On behalf of the Orioles, I extend my condolences to his wife, Marianna, and to his family.

Governor Martin O'Malley also released a statement:

I am saddened to learn of the passing of Earl Weaver, a beloved Baltimore legend, a pioneer, and one of the greatest baseball managers of our time.

As manager, many will remember Earl for ushering in a new era of success for the Baltimore Orioles. In 17 seasons as manager, he led the O's to four World Series - including the memorable World Championship victory of 1970. Though we will miss him dearly, he will always be remembered for his passion for baseball and his spirited dedication to the Orioles and the City of Baltimore.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake also issued a statement of Weaver's death:

This morning Baltimore and the baseball world mourn the death of the great Earl Weaver. As manager of the Orioles, Weaver helped to develop a smarter way of playing baseball and built a team that was competitive for decades.
Weaver's teams brought pride as well as World Series championships to our great city.

Today my prayers are with the Weaver family, the Orioles, and the generations of fans who loved his unique character and shared great memories on 33rd Street.

My Father-in-law died of a heart attack, sitting in his recliner, watching an O's game. It was the way he would have wanted to go, cheering for the O's. I have a feeling Earl was where he wanted to be at the time....with his O's fans.

I have his book that he autographed for my Dad "It's What You Learn After You Know It All That Counts". I think it's time to read it again and reminisce about the greatest manager of all times. My prayers and condolences go out to his family.

What a great loss, he was the greatest Manager, the Orioles ever had. Condolences to his family and friends, he will be missed.
May the Orioles fly you up to heaven, On their mighty special wings,
Where Angels open the gates to heaven, And take you to meet your King,
May God smile down upon you in heaven, As he takes you by the hand,
And lead you to his diamond in heaven, To Manage the Orioles in his land.
May you rest in peace Earl Weaver.

Some of the best memories of my youth were watching Earl's Orioles play. They were Baltimore at it's best.

I grew up an Orioles fan in an era without "Baseball in D.C." (but with a banner that read just that hung along the sidelines during Skins games at RFK). I'm only old enough to remember Earl Weaver's second stint as Orioles manager. But I've read plenty about him and those great O's teams of the late '60s and '70s.
There are some incredibly hilarious, incredibly profane clips on YouTube of Earl telling umpires what he thought of the job they were doing. But my favorite line ever from the man who was ejected from more games than anyone in American League history was his reply to an ump who told him to read the rule book and then offered Weaver to lend him his.
"That's no good," Weaver said. "I can't read braille."

Some people are just so wonderful in so many ways, he seemed to be one of those. God bless him, may he have peace with God. My prayers for his family, friends and many, many admirers.

We always lose the great ones. I just recently lost my mother and I still find myself reaching for the phone to call and see if she is OK.

My deepest thoughts go to his family. Sadly the reality of life vs. death will strike us all but in Mr. Weaver's case he won and will live on in history forever.
