LETTER: Ravens Stadium Mob Left Kids 'Traumatized'

A Perry Hall resident shared her experience during the Ravens Super Bowl stadium celebration.

Perry Hall resident Jennifer Lewis Cabeza submitted the following as a letter to the editor:

My 9- and 13-year-old children and I were at the stadium yesterday (along with my daughter's friend) in Section 121. We had been there since 8 a.m. They had never been to the stadium before that day. All they wanted to see was their Ravens in person for the first time.

Instead, a mob of 40 people rushed our section, kicking about 40 of us out of our seats. We were threatened with our lives; they said if we didn't move they were going to stab us. We cried for help and the state police saw us, came up from the field, but did nothing. My kids were so scared and upset, crying.

We are true Baltimore Ravens fans, season ticket holders as a matter of fact. We are home safe and sound, thank God, but unfortunately my kids are still completely upset over this whole thing. My kids and their friend are traumatized and so am I.

After all that time waiting, we didn't get to see the players come out at all.

Share your experience from the celebration in the comments.

I think it's pathetic that others have to ruin everyone else's day. We all came to see the same thing. The fact that some people need to be thugs and think there so bad. Well your not your just arrogant idiots that get your rocks off by threatening children. Your mother's should be so proud. I honestly hate this city.

Yeah, Tim, but this city seems to ignore the problem douche-bags because they don't want to be politically incorrect or admit where the problems are coming from. Everyone feels entitled in the city. We've discussed for years about moving....eventually we'll get smart and we will.

Its unfortunate this is the case, but you really should've known better then to bring little kids to this event. Expecting grown adults to act responsibly in this city - well, you might as well be expecting a unicorn to come and take you up to the stage.

I suspect this isn't just a Baltimore thing, honestly the Ravens fans post SB win 'celebration' downtown was quite mild compared to what's usual.

As someone who worked for the Ravens, I knew it would be crazy. My kids begged me to go but I said "no way". The security at the stadium is lax at best. Very young guys who where SAFE jackets but truly have not been trained in crowd control of 70,000 (normal game) or 100,000 plus at this event. I was truly scared for the people down there. I'm sorry to hear about your family's experience. I'm sure it was terrifying. The police officers tried to keep the parade safe but couldn't with that amount of people. I believe the mayor should have realized what was going to happen.

Give. Me. A. Break. Some violent people came and made 40 of you move. Smells like melodrama in here. I know several, several people who went and there were no complaints aside from some pushing and shoving. Unfortunately, that can happen in a crowd. Especially of 200,000 in any city USA. Quit dogging Baltimore. No way this is true.

kim d - I would like you to tell my 16 year old daughter that this isn't true. She was there with one of the families that this happened to. She was terrified! She heard my friend being threatened that she was going to be stabbed. Someone threw a soda at my daughter. Tell me who forces their way through a closed gate?? I know that when a gate or door is locked - it means you don't go in. These "punks" could have cared less. They could have come early like everyone else did to get their own seat. They didn't have to act like thugs, threatening mothers and scaring children out of their seats. It was UNACCEPTABLE!!!!!

I was the next section over from her. Saw it happen. The gate busted open from the outside, they rushed in. I had to scoop up my son so he didn't get trampled in the concourse. When I eventually got back to my seat (stadium allowed 2 people to stand/sit on each step in the aisle) I saw the animals scale the wall when you walk in. Then proceeded to pull each other over and push out those sitting there. Took off the woman's hat and threw it away. They were screaming for help, none came. The took over the 3 or 4 rows in that section.

I was also in this section (119/120). Jennifer is being nice when she described a mob. I saw a knife, called 911, because you could see that the police gave up. These were thugs. Many carrying liquor bottles in their back pockets. They were threatening anyone trying to get down the aisle to go to the bathroom that they would stab them if they touched them as they went by. They were telling people to get the "F" out of their seats or they would put them down. There was no way out. Tell ya, I feel like I can handle myself in a situation, but for about 1 hour, it crossed my mind that this could have been my last day. I won't post the rest of my comments, about things I saw and heard..... and Jennifer, I think it was way more than 40. Thank God the Ravens showed up when they did. It seemd to distract this group. I felt bad for the moms and their kids....it was a bad scene

We teach our children to go to police if they are ever in trouble or afraid of something bad happening - what do you tell them when you call the police and they can't help??

My ex wife took our kids (7 and 11 rs old) and had no such issue. Shit happens. It sucks but its life. Hopefully some sort of video evidence can bring you some justice but overall with 200000 people downtown it was an overall success. My kids wont stop talking about the amazing experience it was.

Animal element is what happened after Katrina. Not an excited crowd at an event. People's need to flair so dramatic is just so they can have SOMETHING to complain about. Especially since no incidents were reported. "How could that be they say? It's Baltimore." I'll find something. Sorry you had such a bad time at a free event to commemorate a great moment for the city...where 199,999 other people showed up. Those numbers wouldn't have happened in most cities.

I was in section 119/120 and a mob of people not more than 40 did push pass security after they were made to clear the isle due to fire code. They pushed and jumped over security. I saw no knives and these " thugs" were standing right next to me. They did not threaten me or my children. Too rowdy and obnoxious YES!! Behavior was unnecessary, but they were young maybe 17-20 and excited and wanted to see. It was annoying because they came late and wanted to stand in isle and block my view but I saw NO WEAPONS OR ALCOHOL BOTTLES. I would actually like to see how a bottle of alcohol would fit in their pocket. They only people drinking were the cool fans in the sections around me since 9 am when we entered stadium. There are always rude ppl who act like JERKS especially young dumb ones who think they are cool and above the law. Did not ruin my or my children's time. Once state police had to back in field they eventually went back down on stairs an did not bother anyone because they were fans who got to see their team like they wanted but did go about it in a civilized manor. One of these " thugs" even moved and apologized when he thought he was blocking my video. Go figure.

Mayor Dixon completely dropped the ball and so did the chief of police. I heard only 20% extra police force were added to work the event. The parade staff was fully overwhelmed by people acting as they usually do in the city... acting like they are above the law and free to do anything they are not supposed to.

Lets be honest about the mobs walking illegally in the street and breaking down barriers <cough cough> and screwing it up for the good responsible fans. The typical overly-entitled city youth and young people.

I am shocked there was no riot! It was so close to being a full out riot. Mayor Dixon as always drops the ball, screws up and is treated as she was a hero.

Only 20%?? How would you feel if you were told you had to work on your day off? that is where they get the "extra" police, and it is NOT overtime. 20% is a large number considering the number of officers there are in Baltimore City.

Something here doesn't pass the smell test.

1. There are a little over 220 seats in that section. Almost everyone has acellphone and nobody got video of this mob?
2. 40 people were forced from their seats. What did the other 180 do?

Even if we had "shall issue" in this state, firearms would still be prohibited at the stadium.

As for my experience yesterday, it couldn't have been more delightful. We were surrounded by thousands of people. It was a slice of Baltimore and everybody was happy.

Kim is quick to throw around that the story is not true and to belittle someone for getting the mayor's name incorrect. Some items should be addressed so that people are aware of what is happening out there without having others who have no knowledge of the story feel that he/she is qualified to cast an opinion. I had a situation where I could not get back to my family after going to the restroom, as loads of kids who came at the last minute completely blocked the entrance. I was called every name in the book and threatened, and as another woman and I tried to get past each other, she stopped and stated that she was not going further as a person behind me had a knife. I did see this also, so it is not simply someone making up a melodramatic story. It appears that most areas that had a delightful time - which was amazing watching more and more fans fill the stadium without issue. I go to many Ravens games and everything is generally okay except for some rowdy drunks and people who like to pick fights, but this was beyond scary.

What about the person who was in the same section and debunked the story? I'm just saying, if you're going to make statements generalizing the city, you should at least know who the mayor is. I still have a feeling I'm hearing a bunch of complaints from people who can't handle large crowds, cussing or anything the like. It equates to being "threatened"and "terrified." It's a bit much.

There was not mass violence and rioting, no one ever said that; yet, there were serious issues with youthful mobs over taking the fences, breaking the law, and starting and trying to start fights. Just because you did not see it does not mean a dam thing to anyone. If people had issues with these punks, they had issues.

BTW, Ravens Stadium is officially deemed a "family friendly" environment by the NFL... look it up. Every team in the NFL is either classified as family friendly or adult. The team determines this and makes it official. Family friendly stadiums encompasses special rules and laws when on the stadium grounds. The laws are quite simple: No fighting, No heavy drinking, No bad or harassing language, No weapons, No foul language on signs or clothing, and No poor behavior towards any other fan in the stadium. If any of these rules are broken... you can be arrested or at least kicked out. Does it happen at Ravens Stadium? Sure and those people are removed, fined, arrested, banned ect

Oakland Raiders, Philly Eagles, Chicago Bears, Kansas City Chiefs are few of the teams deemed "Adult". Kids of course can go, but there are no rules about bad language, offensive shirts or signs, and drink till you drop. Thats why these teams are known for roudy fans, lots of fights and assaults. You take your kids and yourself on your own will.

When in Rome Kim?

Most people can handle the drunks and people cursing. This wasn't even close to that!!!! You had to hear this and see this for yourself. I don't care where these people live. They were punks. On another note, wait til you all see this video of about 500-1000 people busting down gates to the stadium, barrelling over security people, trampling anyone in their way. ZOOM in and take a good look. I would imagine this will go viral within a day or so.

Clearly, Baltimore has a checkered past which makes it too easy for people to generalize, act dumb and say nasty things about the city and it's residents. It's not like people from the county flood into the city to spend money, but they they've got plenty of cash in the complaint banks.

Great points teech! Also I am sure Kim D is also unaware that Baltimore City is among 4 cities in the entire nation which are Incorporated! Meaning the city is, as an entity, responsible for all of its debts and projects, as well as, has the ability to be sued. Incorporated Baltimore has been mis-run and abused by the corrupt Democratic leadership the past 25 years. No Mayor has ever gone out on a high note in this city. Burns to Rawlings/Blake have all had corruption, ethics and other violations against them. When Baltimore City goes bankrupt; which they are on the way to, the city and residents are toast!

One person in a section does not debunk a story. And it was not just foul language (heard it all) and it has nothing to do with Baltimore's history (lived here my entire life). I am frequently downtown and I have seen just about everything at Ravens and Oriole games, so I am not just making up or embellishing the situation. I would have thought that there were no issues either had I not gone to the restroom, as while I was sitting it was just a spectacular celebration.

Maybe your 9 and 13 year old children should have been in school, where they belong. If you want them to see their favorite players, a place where 200k people are expected, in a stadium that holds 70k, might not be the smartest of decisions. As you noticed, and as Jack stated above, the majority of the folks inside the stadium...crammed into the lower level...were those who will never see the light of day inside that stadium ever again. It was a FREE event, whether you hold season tickets or not. If you expect a FREE event to celebrate a Super Bowl win in Baltimore City to be peaceful, you are sadly mistaken.

As MIL stated above, if you were smart about it, the upper deck...or even club level...would have been the right move. Last time I checked, you can see the jumbo-tron from every seat in that stadium. And hear the sounds from the speakers as well.

Roving gangs of youth, mostly black, are all too common in the city that bleeds. My family went one year to the fourth of July celebration at the inner harbor where my two sons in their early 20's witnessed a dead body, the result of a stabbing after a bar fight. As we made our way back to our car at the end of the fireworks, there were bands of black youths threatening people and generally causing mayhem in the streets around the harbor. Despite what the news media does or doesn't report about these gangs, the city is increasingly becoming more and more dangerous to visit.

It is funny how there are a few who were not there are experts about what happened. They are telling us how dumb we were for not knowing what was going to happen. The Ravens did not expect to fill the stadium. They thought that it may be half filled and did not expect to have to use the upper deck. It is a sad excuse to say that we should have known that the celebration could get dangerous, especially the next day. I would appreciate the people who said that there will be problems with this had done so Monday, rather than slinging their hindsight opinions the day after.

Throw in some alcohol and not have a small army of law enforcement all over the place, be glad that all hell didn't break loose. The fact that it didn't was a testament to a great city. SHJ, Baltimore does not have a Chief of Police, they have a Police Commissioner, Einstein

Dave, or should I say "genius". Most people with a brain realize what SHJ meant when he says "Chief of Police" as oppossed to "Police Commissioner". His "incorrect" terminology must have really struck a nerve with you for you to insult him over it.

Address the topic please Dave, not punctuation, spelling or obvious terminology. It makes you look uninformed on how to respond to the truth, so you play a trivial "card".

What about all the inner city kids well under 16 not in school causing all the hell and mobs? They are right to be criminals and uncivilized?

The kids at the triple stabbing WERE at the Ravens Celebration. They were 15-16 years old. Why weren't they in school? They have to be upstanding good kids. Right? They took knives why? Were they planning on preparing g some food for the public? Stop making excuses for thugery and criminals.

It was confirmed last night (as I said it would be) these thugs (15-16 years old, not in school, with deadly weapons) WERE at the parade! Steve lives in a wonderland of ignorance and oversight.

Steve: As I have said my times before on this site... I know many people within the powers that be in the city (police, government, business owners and onward). I apologize for always getting the correct information about the reality of issues within the city before you do.

My niece and I took my 10 year old grandson and we sat in section 219. We had a great day and were pleased at how polite everyone was. Everyone around us was just excited and having a great time. The only issue I had was with this little girl, about age 5, who came down and proceeded to step on my feet, fling her arms around and stood right in front of me as I was sitting. It would have been nice if her parent had come down and said something to her. I know she is just a kid, but she was almost sitting in my lap! Don't mind having my own grandchildren sitting on me, but not someone elses. I also would not have let my child or grandchild be that far away from me!

Yeah Steve, and another generation of rude individuals now grace our community because parents like yours and these other kids failed to teach them respect and how to act in public.

It is wonderful that people have an outlet to try to let others know what happened at this event. Jennifer made no comments or judgements about any of the people, or the city, However, in responses, others called her a liar, nuts for taking kids and then some making veiled accusations. Most people had a great time in this great city due to a special football team that has given the city unity and pride. It is unfortunate that people can't describe their incidents without judgemental or contradictory responses from those who just spew their own agenda and enjoy supercilious attacks from behind his or her keyboard.

While I agree that the city didn't do a very good job of planning and that the crowds were outrageous, I can't help but wonder why people wouldn't expect this kind of thing to happen??! It is a FREE event in BALTIMORE CITY!! It is a shame that thugs and animals came in and threatened people with knives, however, as a mother of an 8 year old, I wouldn't dream of taking my child there. It was not a safe situation. I am glad that no one got hurt, but at this point, what can the city or Ravens stadium do? It's not their fault. It's the careless fools/animals/thugs that weren't raised w/ class or respect for others. Such a shame that Joyous Celebration went so sour for some people. On a brighter note, GO RAVENS!!!!

I know that there would be dummies there, cursing, etc. I even expect dumb people to fight, but usually those involved in fights bring it on themselves. But I expected security to at least be on par like a regular season game. I've taken my kids to many games, never felt as unsafe as I did when I saw animals climbing and busting gates open to get into the game.

I was in section 121 also, it was madness. I left my seat to get drinks for my group. On my way back, the first gate was broken and I had to throw my stuff down to procect myself from being beaten and trampled as the mob raced down the tunnel trying to enter the section. I was able to make it back out by the time the second gate was broken and hid behind a concrete pillar the rest of the event for fear of being hurt. I witnessed several people being knocked down and trampled on.

I guess security thought twist ties were good enough to hold the gates shut. I also saw 4 police officers just standing there as fans helped the red shirts close the gate. A woman holding her child in her arms being pressed up against the gate cursing and swinging at those trying to close the gate.

Once again, this is why I appreciate the Patch. My son went and had a great time with no problems, so I was under the impression things were surprisingly under control. Now I'm hearing these stories. Baltimore has so many wonderful things to do, but we never took our kids downtown when they were younger because I've always felt too many problems were covered up. I haven't heard any of the incidents reported here in this story on the 6 o'clock news (other than the stabbing several blocks away), unless I missed something. I will continue to avoid the city like the plague.

Everyone should be held accountable for their actions. I personally was shocked that they were not counting heads as we entered the stadium. I had a great time and was surrounded by family and friends however there were some moments that got a little out of control when people could not enter. When you are holding an event of this magnitude there needs to be ample security. The stadium had people in Red Jackets however they could not control the crowd nor do I think they had anything to contain the crowd. I feel terrible for anyone who did not have a good time because they felt threatened or harrassed by folks who lack self control. Children and Adults were excited to be a part of this ceremony, if you are going to host a celebration of this magnitude, then provide saftey for the people who are attending. On any given football game or New Years eve event, the police present is known. I am very sorry for the families that experienced such horrific behavior from the people of Baltimore...I am glad that no one was hurt, however the emotional scars may never heal...God bless

When the Ravens were transported by bus from the airport to their facility in Owings Mills there were quite a few police escorts. It seems like the same consideration for the safety of the many fans was not given by the city of Baltimore.
And I am shocked by the number of comments here from those who seem to brush this type of behavior off by saying it should be expected because there were so many people. What I expected was that when the Mayor invited everyone to partake in this celebration, that ample security would be provided. I think everyone expects to hear foul language, and plain old jerks, but I don't think anyone should be expected to anticipate that they will be trampled or threatened with a lethal weapon in exchange for the seat that they occupy.
The same people with the "it's no big deal, get over it" attitudes are the type of people who perpetuate this behavior. They have no respect for others' rights. They are not decent human beings. They blame the victim, accept it, and move on.
It's just so sad.

The blame needs to be placed on the city and the people responsible for security at the stadium. They apparently were only estimating 30k people to show up. Not sure how this was a logical estimate based on the crowd that was there for the pep ralley and the crowds that partied in the streets the night of the game. The police were drastically under-staffed for the crowds. Once the crowds got out of hand during the parade they made the call to surrounding police agencies for support. MSP,Baltimore County PD, MDTA, MTA, and others were all frantically called and sent officers in support, but it was way too late. Proper planning of event would of allowed the police to keep the crowds more orderly. To say that there were no issues just because you may not of personally witnessed it is crazy. People are not just making the stuff up. We should be thankful it was not worse. Why does the stadium provide such tight security for games, but for this the gates were open with no metal detectors or pat downs??? People don't bring weapons to parades but they do to games????

Knowing what we know now, maybe not. Not all kids were affected by these turds. Hoping that next year's parade (fingers crossed) has better security at least on par with regular season games.

First of all I was also in Section 121. I was horrified by what happened and have never felt as unsafe as I did on Tuesday. I am not an uneducated, irresponsible or low class for sitting in the lower sections. My group thought going to the stadium would be the best place to take the kids to see the parade. This way we were not on a street packed 8 people deep with people pushing and shoving all trying to catch a glimpse of the parade. Our group got there early and we were able to get good seats. Everything was completely enjoyable until the some of Baltimore's finest compromised the parade route illegally and marched toward the stadium. Right behind us it was hard to believe that people had the audacity to think that it was their right to scale a closed gate, mob a section of people who had been there for hours and threaten and overpower them for their seats. The 5 MD state police officers did nothing to help the section or get the teenagers out. The police ran up halfway and stopped. We were basically held hostage in our seats and tried not to make eye contact with the thugs as to hope they would not harass us next as the police were clearly not interested in helping. It was a dangerous situation and M&T should be ashamed of lack of security it provided. Apparently you cannot have free event downtown as its residents think they are entitled to enter even when gates are closed! They are lucky something much worse did not occur. What a shame for Baltimore!

You got it....the city that bleeds is a mess. Many baby mommas....no baby daddies...no self-respect...lack of parental involvement...truancy...no consequences... high drop-out rates...crime...illegals...guns...crooks in office...drugs...and generally a not my fault mentality. Baltimore is going down fast and in 10 years might be bankrupt. Thank you Martin Omalley, Shelia Dixon and all the other cronies....and by the way....you SHOULD be able to take your children to a World Champion celebration and be safe.....GO RAVENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder if 200,000 people would show up for a parade honoring firemen, police officers, and EMTs from the city and county? You know, to honor those people who sometimes actually risk their lives to help us.

Yes Baltimore has a tremendously rich history and good people.....BUT...BUT...BUT look at the flip side. I am sad over the city's deterioration and hope things can be "fixed". But until the "citizens" change...Baltimore will continue on the down slide. Would YOU go for a walk at night in the city? And I don't mean Little Italy. How about Greenmount and North Avenue?

AND as I said over and over: More and More accounts are starting to come out and be reported on the crimes, fights, flash mobs, and murder at the celebration.
1) Now it was announced that one 11 year child was trampled by "teens" jumping the fences and storming through barriers at the stadium.
2) Rawlings-Blake announced that the celebration was not properly handled and prepared for.
3) Video clips and pictures from within the stadium are revealing teens standing on top railings, acting extremely inappropriate and tempting police to do something.
4) Gates at the stadium were broken open or knocked down by thousands of teens acting unruly (police were easily overwhelmed).

Like any city, why would I pick the worst parts to walk through at night? That's just dumb. I've lived in LA, Dallas and now Baltimore. I grew up in an affluent suburb in VA...you know the burbs where everything is great and everybody loves each other? I've never lived in a more neighborly city than Baltimore. Expecting to choose the worst neighborhood to walk through in any city is lofty. You're completely out of touch with reality. Leaning entirely on stats is ridiculous too. If you are slightly versed in statistics...you'd know that. I also don't have groups of "roving black youth" around me and all the other ridiculous crap I've heard. I mean I do, but they've gotten off the bus to go to school. Maybe they're obnoxious...they're kids. I'm sure you'd be frightened though. I've got plenty of white trash around me though. Maybe you're more used to that it seems.
