National Women’s Hall of Fame To Induct Mikulski

U.S. Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski will be honored as the longest serving woman senator in American history.

The National Women’s Hall of Fame plans to induct and honor U.S. Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski, a longtime Maryland politician, Saturday evening in Seneca Falls, NY.

"Senator Mikulski was the first Democratic woman Senator elected in her own right. On January 5, 2011, she became the longest serving woman Senator in American history," a press release stated.

"We’re here today to honor and learn from the past. The founding mothers of Seneca Falls had the passion and determination to seize the day and to make a difference. They lived and acted in the present. They understood the power of now," Mikulski stated in a release of her prepared speech.

Who would you nominate to be inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame? Tell us in the comments.

Just one of the reasons we need to have term limits on Congress.

Good for her. She has been an excellent Senator and brought many good things to Maryland, including BRAC, helping with the port issues in Baltimore, and has had a long term focus on the economic development of not just Baltimore but all of Maryland. As long as she keeps running she will keep getting my vote. For those that want to post rude comments about her gender, etc... grow up. If that is the only argument you have then you have no argument at all.

No one made any comments about her gender, sport.

I agree with Tom. Senator Mikulski has always served with the interest of the state of Maryland in mind, not big business or fringe political groups. If you don't like her, vote her out.

Can you say gerrymandering? That is why she has stayed in office. What they are doing to the districts is criminal!

How can you gerrymander a whole state...US Senators don't have districts...they represent the entire state.

unrest: this just shows the level of education of many of the posters here. You are exactly right: US Senators - 2 per state - the boundaries aren't EVER changed.
Just how many of these cranks have even been nominated and elected to any Hall of Fame?
Senator Mikulski is a champion of the little guy. We are lucky to have her as our Senator.

Well said Bart. Not to mention that when it comes to Congressional redistricting, gerrymandering is a common practice across both parties, and in general is something only complained about when your party is NOT doing the redistricting. Now I'm not defending the practice in any way, it just appears to be an acceptable evil at this point.

A few years ago I wrote to all of the Md senators asking them why they voted against making English the official language of our country. I received many standard letters in reply, obviously just the generic answers given to anyone writing about the topic, except for Sen Mikulski. She took the time to address each and every point I raised in my letter in the order that I wrote them. Her letter was no shorter than 1000 words and explained quite a bit about her background and family. Though I suppose it is possible that a staffer wrote the letter I really don't think so. It was written in the same forthright language that I have heard her use on many occasions and detailed very specific reasons based on her past for why she voted against the bill. Her main reason was that in the event of an emergency the bill would not have allowed state or local governments from disseminating information in any other language than English and that her parents being Polish immigrants with a less than stellar command of the English language would have had a difficult time understanding the instructions. Though I do not always agree with her policies or ideals, I am grateful that people like her are willing to devote themselves to public service. It is obvious to me that she cares about Md and takes her job seriously. I wish more politicians on both sides had the dedication that Sen. Mikulski does and I thank her for her tireless service.

Nice, Nick. Thanks for sharing that story. Good to know there are politicians who actually care about their constituents and their state. Mikulski has been a public servant for a record-amount of time and deserves our respect. (Plus I still get a kick out of hearing her Bawlmer accent on the senate floor.)

I join Sharon in thanking Nick for his story. I went to Sacred Heart elementary school in Highlandtown with Barbara (class of 1950) and my parents bought many a weekly order in her family's neighborhood grocery store on Eaton Street. She's never forgotten where she came from. You may not always share her political opinions, but you can't deny her lifelong concern for the social well-being of ordinary people!

What an ignorant, mean-spirited, sexist crack! "I think"..."I think"? You must be kidding! This post says more about its writer than it does about the senator.

Her voice sounds like a sewer pipe and has a breath to match it. She needs to retire now before any more fecal coded garbage spews out of her mouth.

Such personal insults have no place on this forum. I would ask that the webmaster, or whoever monitors this site, flag Lou Soupeater's comments as highly inappropriate. The first amendment may protect one's freedom of speech; unfortunately, it does not protect the audience from the speaker's lack of personal self-restraint and respect for the basic human dignity of those he dislikes.

Then you would ask for censorship, George. Rules against "personal insults" on sites such as these apply to posters attacking each other, not political opinions you don't share.
