Northbound I-83 Closing Overnights

The Department of Transportation is fixing collapsed drainage pipes under the highway.

Northbound Interstate 83 will be closed overnight near 29th Street in the city Thursday through Monday.

The highway will be closed from 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. to avoid major traffic delays, said Department of Transportation spokeswoman Adrienne Barnes.

"We’re going to try to do this as expeditiously as possible," Barnes said.

The closures are part of the work to repair collapsed drainage pipes that have closed the left hand lanes of both northbound and southbound I-83 since last month. Barnes said the closure is necessary to allow crews to do some excavating on the road.

Barnes said that the southbound side of the highway will have to be closed to do similar work too, but said no timeline had been set for when that would happen. She said the Department of Transportation would continue to release updates on the work as it progresses.
