UPDATE (11:35 a.m. Feb. 23)—After more than 20 years in the Perry Hall Crossing Shopping Center, near the intersection of Belair and Silver Spring roads, Cake & Wedding Cottage is planning to relocate.
"We're not going out of business, just going to a new store with minimum downtime," said a manager who declined to be identified. "It was a sudden thing ... we lost our lease."
The independently owned store's new location has not yet been finalized, although management hopes to keep the store close to or within the Perry Hall area. It specializes in baking supplies and wedding-themed specialty items like cake toppers and veils.
Sale items will be 50 percent off until Saturday or Sunday of this week, when the store is expected to close for business. It must be vacated by the end of the month.
Cake & Wedding Cottage is expected to open in its new location by mid-March, according to the manager.
What memories do you have of the store? Share them in the comments.

How do you just "lose your lease" so quickly? I'm not blaming them, just a strange circumstance. Heavenly Ham leaves and now this place...

Basically the landlord "gave" their lease to a national chain. Either Dollar Tree or Dollar General, even though there is a dollar store literally 2 mins down the road. I guess they offered them more money! I know it is very un-Christian like to say, but I wish they do not fare well as to teach the big bully chains a lesson as well as the landlord for being greedy!

Leases run for a number of years then landlords have the option to rent the space to someone else or keep the existing tenant. In this case KLNB wanted a big box store to move in like Dollar General. So that's what they do, it's all about the money for KLNB!

KLNB is a low life for loosing The Cake Cottage!! I love that store!!! Why do we need another Dollar store? All that junk form China that stinks anyway. Now the we will have the smell of gasoline from lawn mowers at Sears, next door, combined with the smell of dollar junk all in one location!!! Way to go KLNB !!!!!

Shame on KLNB. So ya it's all about the money! Remember folks!
All the principals at KLNB need to keep driving a BMW and wear $1000. suits!
They could never drive a Ford or Chevy!

My wife did a lot of baking & decorating when the kids were little. As Christmas approached, I would go there and get icing tips and other small items for her stocking, and the occasional larger gift (cake pans, cooling racks, etc.)
Good luck to them, and I hope they stay close.

Omg! Its the only decent place in perry hall to get all my candy making supplies. This just isn't fair. This world is going downhill so fast, what's next? Look @ wendys in Honeygo square. If they cldnt make it, how is Gino's going to make it, they are super expensive, way more expensive than wendys. I'm just so sad over what they are doing to our once very close nit community.

Tammy, " we love the Perry Hall area" . I have to ask why the move to Fullerton? There is available store space in Perry Hall, Perry Hall Square and Joppa Crossing come to mind. Why not stay in Perry Hall if you love it so much?

William -- we tried to stay in the Perry Hall area but due to the lack of response from the centers you mention, we now understand why these centers have several empty spaces. We have been a Perry Hall family for many generations so we hold this area very near and dear to our hearts. Believe me -- we wish we could have stayed in the area as well. As we continue to load up the moving trucks and the store slowly empties, we reflected on how thankful we are for having many wonderful years in the center. It was a place we enjoyed calling our second home. We have shed many tears the past few days and we are so grateful for the support of the community and our customers. We are sad to leave the center -- we will miss our friends at Baskin Robbins, The Harp, and Long & Foster to name a few. But we are looking forward to our new home and hope if you are ever in the area at the Beltway Plaza that you will stop in and say hello. The management group at Belair Beltway Plaza has been outstanding to work with and they are doing everything possible to get our doors open soon.

Best of luck with the move!

Why are you such a jerk? Clearly she wanted to stay. Plus, how dare you question someone? Are you the police of Perry Hall?

LalainMaryland,
You do not know me well enough to conclude that I am a jerk, and I don't know why you resort to such juvenile name calling. I simply asked Tammy a question in which she kindly responded, end of story. Am I the Police of Perry Hall? No I am only a concerned resident of Perry Hall. I was curious as to why a successful business would leave the area after 36 years here. Tammy gave me that answer. I asked Emily to update the article with comments from the local shopping centers, hoping this would shed some light as to why they have been so unresponsive, when a majority of their centers are half full. If these centers are being unresponsive it is counterproductive to the strong efforts Councilman Marks has put forth to bring in and retain business to the Perry Hall area, one of them being a revitalization district right in the heart of Perry Hall itself. The loss of a successful business and the inability to attract new ones is of great concern to me as a resident of this community, as should it be yours.
Peace be with Lalain.

Don't think the Cake Cottage would take less money from customers if they could get more. That's just not good business. KNLB is in business to make money. If the Cake Cottage was willing to sign another long term lease at today's prices they would probably be able to stay there.
Any real confirmation on who is going there, or is this all rumor and speculation?

Couldn't have said it better. The Bagel shop guys went through hell with KLNB,and they too had an awesome product but couldn't handle the expensive property price.
Look at the center now, nine or ten empty spaces, KLNB could care a less. This will be a second go around for a dollar store there. Good luck Cake Cottage.

My mother was a long time customer of the store. I can remember going with her as a child, and the employees would call my mother by name. We made lots of candy together. Probably, my best memory, was decorating a gingerbread house she purchased there. I am a mom now, and I still shop there with my daughters. We purchase fresh baked gingerbread houses every year and made it a tradition for our holiday. My girls even went to a youth gingerbread workshop a few years ago. I love that store so much, and can't understand why they are being replaced by ANOTHER DOLLAR STORE. Won't it be just great.... Dollar Store one end,Goodwill at the other end. We do not need another run down center in Perry Hall. Good Luck Cake Cottage.....My family and I will follow you where ever you go!!!

I have been a Cake Cottage lover since I was a child and went with my mom to the store in Kingsville. Now, I take my own children to the cake cottage for their birthday supplies and gingerbread house goodies. I am very sad the hear that this location is closing and even more to hear of the choice of the new location. It will impact my desire to shop in the store simply because I don't like to go to that shopping center. They have an outstanding business, wonderul products, friendly staff....all of it....except a location I feel comfortable visiting.

I WILL NOT STEP FOOT IN THAT SHOPPING CENTER. I KNOW FIRST HAND THE WAY KLNB TREATED THE OWNERS OF CAKE COTTAGE. ALL ALONG THEY WANTED ANOTHER NATIONAL CHAIN OF DOLLAR STORES AND FORCED THE OWNER OF CAKE COTTAGE OUT, ONLY GIVING THE OWNER VERY LITTLE TIME TO FIND A NEW ESTABLISHMENT. LET'S NOT FORGET THIS IS A FAMILY BUSINESS AND WHEN I THINK OF PERRY HALL I THINK OF FAMILY AND TO HAVE THESE SUITS FROM KLNB FORCE A FAMILY BUSINESS OUT AFTER HAVING BEEN THERE FOR OVER 30 YEARS IS JUST HORRIBLE. I WISH CAKE COTTAGE ALL THE BEST AT THEIR NEW LOCATION I ALWAYS SAY THINGS HAPPEN FOR A REASON, IF U LOOK AT ALL THE EMPTY STORES AT THE CENTER THIS COULD BE A POSITIVE MOVE FOR CAKE COTTAGE

softballmom: That was exactly my point. The place looked like, you know, a Perry Hall shopping center about 18 months ago.
Yet here we are, and our shopping centers are losing (if not kicking out) good businesses faster then Councilman Marks can get them filled.

I love the Cake and Wedding Cottage. I love the ladies who work there. I feel badly for the business as well, especially since they had such a vital and thriving business at their location. Now. Being greedy, I'm thrilled that they will be closer to my house, and infinitely easier to get to! What luck for me! If there is anything I can do for them (Cake and Wedding Cottage), I hope they let me know!

I took candy making classes there 20 years ago when it didn't have any wedding stuff. As for the new location, I'm happy. It is much closer to where I live and right next door to my favorite movie theatre. You know, they could have stayed, paid the higher sq. footage rate and raised their prices but you all, their customers, are too important. So for those of you who don't drive past the Beltway, get real cause there are LOTS OF GREAT FOLKS living inside the Beltway and some of us are in the city (OMG) and damn proud of it.

It is a shame the shopping center would not allow a reliable, longtime business to stay on. The Belair Beltway shopping center seems to be thriving. I am glad the Cake Cottage found a new home there. I will definitely continue to shop there as it serves a unique product in a great way. Who needs another dollar store????

It's true! I picked up Carrabba's two weekends ago and I was shocked at how that shopping center was not only full (I saw I believe two total empty storefronts, although one might've just been a closed store), but the variety of goods and services was pretty impressive.
It's just too far out of our way to typically recall it's there.

Emily, Can you update the article with comments from the management company from the Cottage's former home ? Also could you seek comment from the management company of Perry Hall Square and Joppa Crossing shopping center to see why there was " lack of response" on their part? Maybe their is a bigger issue here in Perry Hall that needs to be investigated.

William, Tell you what, I wanted to open a business in PH. Just not possible. Call the Perry Hall Shopping Ctr landlords, if you can get someone to answer, take a look at the empty spaces. You will see roofs leaking, mice, rats, sewer and water problems, dirty and rusting doors and windows, old worn out a/c units, lights don't work, old circuit panels.. Now who wants to rent space like that? As for Joppa Crossing the landlord never returns calls, I wanted to open a shop and was never called back after 3 attempts! I gave up and went to Harford County!

I've been going to the Cake Cottage as long as I remember, I believe that they had another location before this one. Started out going with my mom to pick up molds and melts when I was in Elementary School - the smell of clear vanilla extract is inexorably linked to those memories of the Cake Cottage and making candy with my mom and sister. Now that I do elaborate hobby cakes, I get almost all of my supplies there. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and they carry things that no one else locally does. After eight years of staying home with my kids, I applied for a position with them recently. Apparently with all the chaos of the move, the applications were set aside for the time being, but I am hoping that I get a chance to interview when they begin reviewing applications again. Either way, I am very glad that they were able to make the best of a bad situation and I will certainly be one of the first customers back through their doors when they open up again.

Just remember folks, there are always two sides to a story. Just because one side has spoken does not make them right or wrong. It is odd that we have not heard from the management team of the shopping center. I thought I had heard last week somewhere that this was not a shock to the owners of the Cake Cottage, that in fact this had been in discussion since last year. In any event, best of luck to them as they move their business down the road a few minutes

Wishing you luck as you re-locate your store inside the beltway. Another option for cake and candy supplies is a fantastic store located in BelAir, MD - behind Harford Mall called Stephanie's Sweets. Definitely worth a visit for all your cake and candy supply needs.
