Who's buying jewelry for Valentine's Day?

According to two Perry Hall jewelers, the answer is men, and they tend to be last-minute shoppers.

"Every season, every holiday, we have about five people come here and say, 'Help me,'" said Village Gem owner Tommy Thobe.

The rush for jewelry occurs just days before the holiday, attracting shoppers across the budget spectrum.

"The price range is really up to the individual. You have guys who will only spend $50 and some who will spend $5,000," said Vinny Fino, co-owner of Fino Jewelers on Belair Road.

Deciding what to purchase, however, is often more of a concern than price.

"Sometimes they look a little lost, so we always try to help them out," Fino said. "A lot of guys think that because it's Valentine's Day, they should get a heart, but you just have to know if the person you're giving it to likes hearts or not," he said.

"Just pay attention to what she says. She'll drop hints all year long about what she likes and what she doesn't like," he said.

Thobe said Ravens themed jewelry, heart pendants and diamonds are especially popular this year.

And in spite of the high price, gold remains popular, he said.

"Everybody likes to get gold. They may complain about the price, but they still like to give it. Silver has also picked up a lot recently," Thobe added.

Smaller trinkets like Chamilia beads, starting at about $35 in sterling silver with decorative glass or gem stones, are also hot items this year, according to Fino.
