UPDATE: Perry Hall Man Charged in 3 Armed Robberies
Police arrested Justin Nicholas Radtke on April 28, and charged him with robberies in Perry Hall, Timonium and Towson.
UPDATE (May 2, 9:57 a.m.)—Police have charged a Perry Hall man with robbing a Perry Hall Subway restaurant, attempting to rob a Timonium Subway restaurant and robbing The Tan Company in Towson.
Justin Nicholas Radtke, 27, of the 4400 block of Darleigh Road, was arrested on April 28, according to Lt. Ron Brooks of the White Marsh police precinct. Radtke was charged with three counts of armed robbery and two counts of theft less than $1,000, court records show.
Police declined to release a photo of Radtke Wednesday morning, as the investigation into other incidents is ongoing.
At about 4:45 p.m. on March 31, a man entered the Subway in the 8600 block of Belair Road at Silver Spring Shopping Center, asked for a cup of water and passed a note to the cashier. The note demanded cash and implied the robber had a gun. The robber then stole cash and fled toward Slater Avenue, Patch reported.
At about 10:51 a.m. on April 1, a man entered the Subway in the 1800 block of York Road and passed a note to the clerk, demanding cash and implying that he had a gun. The clerk, however, did not understand English and walked away. The suspect then fled the store, according to a Patch report.
At about noon on April 1, a man entered The Tan Company in the 7200 block of York Road, passed a note to a clerk, demanding cash and implying that he had a gun. He then grabbed cash from the shop's cash drawer and fled, Patch reported.
Baltimore County's robbery unit connected Radtke with each of the three incidents, which occurred in separate police precincts, according to Detective Cathy Batton, a Baltimore County police spokeswoman. Police are looking into possible connections between Radtke and additional crimes.
The Perry Hall Subway robbery is one of three robberies reported at the Silver Spring Shopping Center since March. On March 30, a man was robbed at gunpoint near an outdoor M&T Bank ATM, and on April 28, two men robbed a Pizza Hut at gunpoint.
A representative of KLNB, which owns the shopping center, was not immediately available for comment.
What should the shopping center do to prevent future robberies? Tell us in the comments.

I remember all the comments when this news first broke about the bus line providing us with our criminal activity and, as I suspected, the suspect is a Perry Hall resident. The crime rate is getting out of control here, but it's now time to start seeing what we can do to prevent it!

What to do? Hmmm....make sure that property values are not astronomically high, nor really low, so that a diverse population of middle class homeowners can actually afford to purchase homes in the area ($275K and below for single family home is what I'm thinking here). This would ensure a large pool of potential homeowners that are diverse in nature, and also ensure that investors cannot rent a home to individuals who cannot afford the neigghborhood. These prices of $350K and up are not good for our neighborhood, in spite of what some folks may think. We want strong community and that starts with the avg middleclass 'everyman' type...not those folks on the edges of the normal curve financially.

At 27 he has done real good. Two pages of records in the criminal case records, suspended drivers license and on probation to 2013 for drugs. Real piece of work. Does not matter what race he is only that this is the type of person who needs a long time in jail to protect society.

@DB You are right. It's not about race. It's about liberal judges appointed by liberal maryland democrat politicians letting these guys out. He should have been in jail for a longer stretch and this would not have happened.

I can't get over all the crime recently. I'm glad this guy has been caught, but there are still others on the loose. In fact, I was at my dentist on Monday, they hygentist said she walked into her Parkville home Friday evening, caught a burglar in her bedroom, stealing her jewelry. Despite catching the perp in the act, when she called the police and they took 5 hours to get to the scene. Unreal. (btw, I told her to contact the Parkville Patch Editor.) It's frightening how close the crime is to home.

Stacy if the burglar was still in the house when she called they would have been there within minutes. If she called to report a burglary not in progress then priority calls come first... Of course when something happens to somebody they think it's the most serious crime in the world

I also find it amusing that in regards to the Timonium Subway attempted robbery, the article states that the clerk did not understand English and walked away. How exactly was he a clerk at Subway, taking orders and waiting on customers? Perhaps he had an issue with reading English and went to get a manager. Either way, it's a good thing there was a barrier, and the suspect fled.

I'm not trying to make light of burglaries, however that situation spoken about earlier does not make sense. There is no way possible it would take county police 5 hours to show up to a B&E in progress or where the bad guy just left. If you come home to find your house was broken into, you have no timeline, suspect info, or direction of travel then ur probably gonna wait

Crimes like these increase unless innocent people are allowed to carry concealed weapons. Those states that allow it have seen decreases, because the criminals don't know who is armed and who is not.
Red Dolphin

that begs the question Ed, do you think if the sub way worker wouldve had a gun this robbery would not have happened ? just asking?
Ed
4:51 pm on Wednesday, May 2, 2012
Can't say yes or no. However, a robber would think twice before walking into a Subway, 7-11, etc., not knowing how many of the customers are armed. That's what
causes crime to decrease in the states that allow carrying concealed weapons. Ed

Here's a statistic: if an armed robber comes into a business that has a clerk with a gun and the clerk kills the armed robber, that armed robber won't rob any more.

Great, and if clerk is dead he will not clerk anymore. Give them the money.
Tim
9:03 am on Thursday, May 3, 2012
Perhaps, but people will continue to commit robberies until you give them a reason not to.
If they think it's even POSSIBLE they could get shot robbing store X, I can assure you the vast majority will pass over that institution.
I doubt anyone with a brain will try and rob the Liquor World for example, after the last guy that did nearly got shot for it by the owner who was armed.
Situation is different though, when you are talking about paid employees versus true small business owners. Even IF we instituted a concealed weapon law for store owners today, the policies on criminal engagement by employees wouldn't change.
Paul Amirault
1:31 pm on Thursday, May 3, 2012
Tim, I'm not sure if that is true. I believe it presumes that a crook is somewhat rational. If he believes every store he may rob he might be confronted with a gun, one of two things happens I believe. He gives up his life of crime, or he comes in and immediately has the gun out. I believe we have more dead clerks and owners as a result.
Tim

Paul,
I had to look no further (locally speaking) then the success rate of the Towson area Citizens on Patrol program to show how rational crooks are.

Put a high fence around the Slater Ave side preventing exit on foot or car. Force people and cars out onto Belair Rd or Silver Spring. Install cameras everywhere and advertise the camera surveillance with signage.

Concealed carry for everyone in Maryland is coming. In a recent decision by Judge Legg in federal court the requirement in Maryland law stating that a person must have "...a good and substantial reason..." to obtain a permit to carry a concealed weapon was struck down. The state asked for a stay in the case and Judge Legg granted it...until July. Based upon what I read in his decision there is no way that the state is going to convince him to reverse himself and the stay will be lifted.
The real problem here is that most business owners do not realize that NO PERMIT IS REQUIRED to carry a concealed firearm while on the premises of any business that they own, rent, or lease. All they have to do is arm themselves with a firearm and the knowledge as to when and how to use it.

Part of the blame goes to Republican economy policy for screwing the middle class for decades.
However, mostly blame these criminals parents for failing to raise their children well. I'm not suggesting it's easy, but if you can't support one fiscally and emotionally don't have one.
That said, there are exceptions of well raised kids who turn out poorly though.
We're all human, we all make stupid mistakes when we're young. Some worse then others, obviously.

Ed

Look, I'm not against concealed carry, but the crime rate has been going down for years nationally (since at least the 80s) for a variety of reasons. In spite of the complaints about Maryland's liberal judges, the fact is that sentences are longer and parole is harder to come by now in Maryland AND nationally than it was a generation or so ago. Of course there are always anomolies (the city's murder rate, that skyroketed while murders were falling nationally but now seems to be on a downward trend) and the one truth is that crime rates don't mean didly-squat when you are the victim, but I don't think it's as much doom and gloom as some of these comments would suggest.
Ed
7:55 pm on Friday, May 4, 2012
I agree about not that much doom and gloom, I just feel for the innocent victims walking the streets, and mugged and stabbed / shot. The innocent victims both customers / clerks in stores being robbed / shot. The innocent home owner victims being robbed / shot in their own homes. Something needs to change to turn this thing around and make it safe no matter where we are. If it takes all of us being armed, so be it.

kevin
12:37 pm on Monday, May 7, 2012
No this is a one party state .You can't blame the democrats ,yes I said it , it is society and I think that carry laws are allowed in many democratic states also. Arm the citizens that are legal(no felonies) and we'll see a drop. No one can honestly produce a state where the crime HASN"T gone DOWN with carry laws in place .
Ed

Political partys have nothing to do with it. Starts with the raising, or not raising
of children at home, who turn into criminals.
