Perry Hall Mom Marches Against Abortion
Thousands participated in the March for Life in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 23.
UPDATE (10:49 a.m.)—On the 39th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision, thousands of abortion opponents marched and held a special program in Washington, D.C.
Described as a "religious pep rally," the Monday event showcased a growing number of young people who identify as antiabortion, The Washington Post reported.
The march portion of the event was organized by March for Life, a nonprofit organization, while a related youth rally and Mass were hosted by the Archdiocese of Washington.
Sherrie Palmateer of Perry Hall, joined by her children, was among the demonstrators.
"My children and I went there and were forever changed. We prayed that this law that has hurt so many would be changed," Palmateer wrote in an email to Patch.
"As we marched through the streets of Washington in a beautiful peaceful march, our hopes were lifted that one day we will see an end to abortion," she wrote.
A group of abortion rights activists also demonstrated during the march, according to The Washington Post.
Would you support or oppose the overturning of Roe v. Wade, which could allow states to illegalize abortion? Tell us in the comments.
Editor's Note: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that the march was hosted by the Archdiocese of Washington. The march was organized by March for Life, a nonprofit organization, while a related youth rally was hosted by the Archdiocese of Washington.

This is a PERSONAL decision that a woman has the right to choose. I am not one who would choose to have an abortion, but to take away a woman's right to choose is like taking away a woman's right to vote.

- I support Roe vs. Wade.
- I also support the ability of those who oppose it to peacefully protest like above.
Although if anyone who opposes it thinks overturning it will end abortions, they are simply not thinking it through. Still, if it'd make them 'feel better' about it being "illegal but still happening, and putting not just fetuses but the woman at risk", then I mean, there's that.

Tim the truth is women who are getting legal abortions are being made infertile, I have two friends who both had abortions when they were younger, legal abortions, neither of them can concieve a baby, it is heart wrenching for them. Also women have been raped on legal abortion tables, they have had their bowls cut into, and have been left dead, people don't hear about these....and more...You see women are at risk...You really have to know all about what goes on listen to the women who have had abortions...you will hear story after story of regret... and the men who have broken hearts at the loss of Fatherhood. We peacefully protest because of the love in our hearts, and the hurt we feel for those who go through this.

Results of the 1991 Anti Abortion Referendum were as follows:
Chapter 1, Acts of 1991, revising Maryland’s abortion law to prohibit State interference with a woman’s abortion decision under certain conditions, was approved by a vote of 1,114,377 to 690,542.
Marylanders spoke on this subject 20 years ago. The irony of the situation is the Catholic Church also opposes contraception which results in more unplanned children which results in more abortions. Seriously?

How can all of you be in favor of murdering innocent life in the womb? We should all be against abortion if we truly believe in the sanctity of life. Many of you would be against the death penalty for the most vile criminals yet believe a woman has the right to kill her baby - hypocrisy. The reason the Catholic church is against contraception is because it can in some circumstances prevent implantation of a fertilized egg. Blaming the Catholic church for abortions is of the lowest order Paul. People need to take responsibility for their actions (not have an abortion) and the government needs to stop subsidizing bad behavior. Thank you Sherrie for standing up for the unborn.

Ken - first, I am not going to argue pro or anti abortion stances as that results rehashing of the same arguments we have heard for 35 years. Nearly 62% of Marylanders approved the law, I would guess that number has not gone down.
A couple of items to note. You call people who favor abortion as a hypocrite for then favoring the death penalty. What do you call people who don't favor abortion but favor the death penalty? I will give the Catholic Church kudos for their consistency on their position, anti-abortion and anti-death penalty.
You are incorrect on the Catholics Church position regarding contraception. They don't approve any of it. A condom does not result in a fertilized egg. Remember the rhythm method the Church approved? That meant don't have sex when you may fertilize an egg. The best way to prevent abortion is to prevent fertilized eggs, that means contraception.
Finally, "people need to take responsibility for their actions". I say have the tools available to prevent pregnancy. People are not just going to abstain. I would think that we could agree everyone's goal is to reduce unwanted pregnancies, whether or not they result in abortion.

It is amazing that people are even having a discussion about whether or not it is ok to kill a person. It is a sad day when people think they should have a choice to decide whether or not they want to kill a baby. This society has become brainwashed. Go home and thank your mom that you were not killed because of a choice.

Almost no one is going to change anybody's mind on the issue of abortion. We should all agree that reducing unplanned pregnancies is a good thing we can all work on. It will reduce abortions, it will reduce the number of children born into dreadful economic situations that result in a whole new set of problems for all of us.

In 1973, Roe V Wade was passed, not to promote abortion as a means of birth control, but to save the lives of American women. I'm positive that making the VERY personal decision to abort is never an easy one. If you're against abortion, then don't have one.

Abortion needs to remain legal, but have some strict regulations. For the ones who are harshly against abortion, picture your 15yr old daughter getting savagely raped and as a result, she becomes pregnant. Now do you think that it is the best interest of the unborn child and your daughter to allow the pregnancy to go on???? People don't think of examples like this.

Right to Lifers love life all life the women, the man, the baby. Have you heard women talk who have had a abortion and how it has messed up their life, have you heard the pain in their voice, saying I wish I knew I wish someone told me. Have you heard the men talk and seen their pain I have. People can say what they want but a human hand or foot is a human hand or foot in or out of the womb. Abortion stops a beating heart. That means death. Its just the facts. Prolifers love people that is why they are there fighting for life. We Love all Life. And myself I also have a Higher Voice to answer to, my Heavenly Father. Jim and Rick a baby is a Gift from God, its not the babys fault what his father did. A friend of mine adopted a beautiful girl , you see her biological Mom choose life after she was raped. I don't know what my friend would do without her beautiful daughter. You see two wrongs never make a right.

The harsh reality is that our state has been lost in the simplicity of "slogans".[Woman's right to choose",etc.] When you drill down to how that can impact reality, just look at the recent case in Elkton. New Jersey, which has taken the time to tighten up laws surrounding this issue, had a situation where the "doctor" decided to finish a procedure in Maryland, because he knew that we are beyond lenient, and the woman almost died. Upon further investigation,35 week old fetuses were found in a freezer at this clinic. Something is wrong here, and we need to get beyond the sloganeering, and address this issue. What kind of society do you want? John

Ten Comm.say thou shall not kill, If u really take the time to know what happens in an abortion u would understand that a child is being killed. If u r a christian and read the bible you will understand what God is saying in Jer 1:5: Before I formed u in the womb I knew u, before you were born I set u apart; I appointed u as a prophet to the nations." Read Ps 51:5, Ps 139:13-16. If u are a Christian I challenge u to read these pass and ask God to speak to u about this. If ur not then i will speak to the facts,I believe a women has a choice, that choice is hers up until she conceives a child, then there are 3 people involved, first the man. I know a couple they conceived a child, she didn't want the baby he desperatly did, begged her not to abort the baby, begged the doctor not to do it. he wanted the baby, she choose abortion and he lost fatherhood, it affects him to this day 34 yrs later, where was his choice? Next the baby..do u realize the horrible things they do to the babies, do u realize in partial birth abort. they breech the baby and as the babies head comes out they stab it in the back of the head and suck the brains out. This happens up to 9 mos This is just facts. Or the other ways. Do u realize that after abort. babies bodies r thrown in garbage cans or down garbage disposals? some case kept in jars in the doc clinic. Women have been raped mangled on the abort. table some left for dead, the pain they feel later at the loss is forever. www.prolife.com/everett.html

I know a man personally who lost his change at fatherhood do to his girlfriend of 8yrs choosing an abortion he had no say, it hurts him deeply til this day, I have seen the bodies of babies thrown in the trash. This is why I am prolife. I have listened to the abortion doctors who became prolife after seeing silent scream, why? I have not made up any of this it's the facts as hard as they are to hear. Yes it is hard to see those pictures but if right to lifers didn't show them, no one would know the truth. I challenge you to read this article . Peace to you Rose

Sherrie, I will not argue pro or con about abortion as the discussion never ends as everyone has staked out their positions on this issue and almost all will not change their mind. As I said in an earlier post, in 1991 nearly 62% of Marylanders disagreed with you, they have not changed their opinion.
When you mention that the Ten Commandents say Thou shall not kill as justification, I direct you to the fact that most of those same people will endorse the death penalty. I also point you to Rose's comment that a significant number of abortion opponents think it is okay to murder abortion doctors and bomb their clinics. I will say the Catholic Church opposes the death penalty, abortion and murdering abortion doctors which is a consistent position. My problem with the Catholic Church is they also oppose all forms of birth control which leads to more unplanned pregnancies which leads to more abortions and more children born into a life of economic misery. Does anyone really think that a majority of Catholics avoid contraception?
Finally you bring up partial birth abortions which are a very small percentage of all abortions and is done to evoke emotions, but many times these are done to save the life of the mother.
That said, why can't everyone agree the best way to reduce abortions is to avoid unplanned pregnancies. Deal with sex with young adults or near adults for what it is, a natural human function that can lead to children if you are not careful?
Sherrie Palmateer
8:48 pm on Friday, January 27, 2012
1991 was along time ago and I know hundreds of people who have changed their mind since then. Also there are many abortion doctors who have changed their mind. Even the lady from Roe vs Wade is now prolife, you can read her story. Yes the best way to avoid abortions is unplanned pregnacies. But you are wrong about the partial birth abortions they are done late term many times when a child could live on its own, and the majority are not done to save the mother. I did not write this to evoke emotions only to tell the truth. I have seen the pain caused by abortion, in people very close to me... and I write this because of the ache in my heart . and my Love for Christ.

Sherrie, what you fail to see is that it is legal in Maryland and you will not change minds no matter what the rhetoric. Partial birth abortions are a small percentage of all abortions. Please focus on preventing unplanned pregnancies. Abstinence only educa tion promulgated by the Bush administration was ridiculous. To imagine your children or mine, depending on age, do/did not engage in premarital sex is ridiculous. Prevent unwanted pregnancies and there are Zero abortions except to save the life of the mother. Isn't that a goal we can all strive for?

The abortion discussion is a fascinating topic. Everybody on both sides of the issue will use any example to evoke emotion.[ someone who is raped, partial birth abortion, "choice vs. pro-life", catholic bashing,etc.,etc.] If you are honest with yourself, and lock in on only one key question, it will change how you think. That is, when does life begin? As a society, we have to decide the answer to this question,or the discussion will deteriorate into slogans and the current rationalizations to fit convenience. John

John, I totally agree. What complicates it is religious views versus non-religious views (you know, the one non-religious governments run under).
So many myopic religious folks seem to forget that our country was not designed to be run by religion. As much as the forefathers made a point of mentioning the belief "in God", they also wanted people to have religious freedom. By this very statement, it necessitates our governments to be non-religious in nature.
It's all well and good for whoever to have whatever religious beliefs they have. People are also more then entitled to vote for whatever candidates they want based on that. However, expecting one faith based beliefs to be forced on anyone else is irrational.

Yes we do need to lock in the answer to when does life begin, and truthfully answer that question. A man who hits his wife in the stomach and kills the unborn baby is charged with murder , but if the mother takes the babys life it is a choice. Double standard I would say. It can't be a life in one instance and not the other.
Tim
1:49 am on Saturday, January 28, 2012
The problem is the general population will never agree to when life begins.
Fundamentalists say it happens at conception.
Pragmatists say it happens at the point where the fetus can survive outside of the womb - around 5 months.
The thing about this issue, is there are so many varying opinions on what's acceptable in the 'abortion' category. Some folks say if it's in the first trimester, fine. Others say clear through the second trimester. Others say it's OK if it's through rape or incest only.
It is rather curious, your example given. Would a man hitting a woman in the stomach when she was three months pregnant (and causing a miscarriage) be considered murder? I mean, if she was 5-6 months pregnant, I could totally see that being the case - and not a double standard.
I have no idea.

Honestly, I think this world needs smaller families in it. We're overpopulated - as a country, as a planet.
Really, I'd just like to see the existing children on this planet taken care of first, before I worry about the unborn. There's no shortage of shock/heart wrenching videos of those either, am I right?
Both sides have powerful cases. For me, a combination of not being able to tell a woman what she can do with HER body, and the fact we're bursting at the seams as a planet lead me to the viewpoint I have.

Statistics indicate nearly 50% of all pregnancies are unplanned. Of those, 40% result in abortion. Stop the first 50% and we don't have an issue. But many of those who are anti-abortion are also anti-contraception. I show you the Catholic Church. They believe pregnancy is a gift from God.
