Perry Hall Shows Appetite for Third Subway
The newest Subway location along Belair Road plans to hold a grand opening celebration on Feb. 1.
There were naysayers, but according to store manager Rick Saini, Perry Hall's third Subway location, along Belair Road near Safeway, is doing just fine.
A grand opening celebration, including a $5 sub promotion, coupons and giveaways (including free cookies), is planned for Feb. 1. It first opened its doors in September.
Saini does double-duty as the general manager of the newest location, as well as the Honeygo Village Center Subway, both owned by Nilam Desai. The third location in Silver Spring Shopping Center is operated separately, Saini said.
Multiple locations can coexist within a small area because the customers of each store represent "completely different demographics," he said.
"Honeygo is new Perry Hall; Belair Road is old Perry Hall," Saini said. "We're getting more business, not taking customers away from the other location."
Perry Hall residents have, in the past, been critical of duplicate chain locations. The community has Baskin-Robbins, Dunkin' Donuts, Weis Markets, CVS/pharmacy and Rite Aid in pairs. A second Walgreens is expected to open by the spring.
But Subway customer John Mlynski said he enjoys the brand and the convenience of having another nearby restaurant.
"It's quick and easy and healthy," Mlynski said. "I eat it every day. If not here, then at work."
Do you mind seeing multiple chain stores in Perry Hall or do you wish corporations would spread them out more? Tell us in the comments.

All I know if I was Serpico's I would have had a hissy fit, they probably did. Leases almost always protect tenants from competition like this because it divides the market.

My wife and I were treated very poorly by the management at the new Subway. He was rude and will never get my business again.

Of course parking in the fire lane is a classic also.

The manager at the Honeygo store, who is the same one at Belair Road, has always be pleasant. And Serpico's is a different menu and these both should compliment one another. If I want a philly cheese steak or pizza, I'll go to Serpico's. If I want a cold cut of sorts, I'll go to subway.

I'd love to be able to tag every illegal fire lane parker with a 100 dollar ticket.

Double it when they block the curb cuts for wheel chairs. Just simply lazy.

Speaking of that, if i had a dollar for every self-entitled (expletive) who parks in the handicapped spot in front of the Perry Hall Starbucks at Bel Air/Joppa.
Too many occasions I end up walking into the store right after said self entitled jerk. It's all I can do to keep quiet some mornings.

Have had family members work for Subway. Can tell you this. They do NOT use top quality ingredients. You want a good sub, go to a true Italian deli.

Who actually goes to Subway expecting good quality? :)

If the police would fine all of the drivers who park illegally as stated above, we would have plenty of money for air conditioning in the schools.

unfortunately, not enough police around to do this kind of thing. It's probably a low return on investment to have police officers do this as well.
Would be nice if they could get a different group (paid less) to monitor and have the authority to write tickets specifically for parking lot violations.
Then again, it's sad we have to even do this.

I'd do it for a 20% commission! Between handicap scofflaws and fire lane violaters, could be a good deal. There is no difference between a parking meter and this.

you should really watch when people park in front of subway at the fire lane where are they really going it not subway.

doesn't matter if they are patronizing Safeway, Serpico, Subway or Swan Song...it's the fire lane. For. Fire. Trucks.

FYI, dietary information for Subway is found here:
http://www.subway.com/nutrition/nutritionlist.aspx
Although the 6" subs/sandwiches are relatively low in calories, this is before mayo, chips, and a soda. Sodium count is very high for the relative small sandwich.

You check the calories and sodium on pizza or burgers lately....subway is still a health choice hands down

Also low in calories because their subs have the least amount of meat of any sub I have eaten anywhere.
Get one with double meat, cheese and mayo and add the chips and a Coke, and watch your waistline explode.

Don't load it up with Pickled Veggies, stick to the fresh raw ones such as green peppers, onions, spinach, lettuce, tomato...ect. No sodium. Additionally, some of the sauces are balanced between sodium content or fat. Mayo is not going to have much sodium, but it will have fat, where as sweet onion or honey mustard will have lots of sodium, but no fat.
Personally, if I'm going to be "good" I get the 9 Grain Honey Oat NOT toasted. Pepper Jack. (Lots of these veggies) Green peppers, Onions, Olives(some sodium here), and LOTS of spinach. Top that down with some Honey Mustard and we are good to go.
This subway is better at giving you the veggies you ask for rather then the one on HoneyGo.

Folks would be stunned how many calories they could save off of fast foods by removing the mayo, sour cream, or whatever other cream sauces/spreads come on fast foods.

Why does everyone seem to enjoy the constant hammering of "fast food"? You can go to the finest restaurants anywhere and get more fat and calories than any McDonalds could produce. Ever been to Ruths Chris and seen them deliver an 18 ounce rib-eye sizzling in butter, not to mention the appetizers, sides and desserts that usually accompany such a meal.
Heck, for a while the cheese fries at Outback were voted the worst food in America.
Most sauces in fast food (and any other restaurant) are mayonnaise based. That's where the fat and calories are, and everybody has mayo in their own house.
Personal choice and personal responsibility.

Tim and Paul..
Got anything to do besides downtalk and complain about the area you live in? People complain about firelanes being blocked? Should I have a rant about the 3rd world rights behind the serpico counter? Someone should call the cops and see if the serpico's cooks are even legally USA citizens. I doubt they are. What about the 8 to 10 americans out of legit work there? What about tim's comment downtalking the avenue after night time? LOL! I have been going to the avenue ALONE with friends since I was like 12? So for a full grown man to come here, live in PH and downtalk the avenue because of the bus stops at night time. Thats pretty sad! Come correct me on my spelling, living in Perry Hall past 14-15 years, so come and try to tell me what you know about my area!

Rant about whatever you want. It's a free internet.
Are you suggesting the Avenues/White Marsh Mall area wouldn't be safer without a bus line?
This has nothing to do with race, contrary to popular perception, and everything to do with household income level.
There's no shortage of caucasian criminals in this area. In fact, pretty much everywhere you look on here, crimes are being reported and found to be committed by caucasians.

better Subway then a place like McDonald's though.
I really don't want to see local businesses disparaged though - if they don't deserve it. I'm glad it's doing well.
There are plenty of worse fast food places to eat around here then Subway, and you can still get a footlong sub intelligently constructed for around 600-700 calories. That's just fine for almost anyone even on a caloric diet, if you skip the chips and drink water with it (you'll need the water anyway).

Subway is good for a quick sub and not greasy food. I have had good experiences at both Subway's. I use to go to the one in Honeygo but now go to the one by Safeway just because it is closer to the house. If I'm at Weis then I go there. Definitely enough people around here to support both.

I would bet you would complain if people were in Serpicos during a fire and some lazy person was parked out front - blocking the firemen. People complain, for the most part, because they care. Be that "someone" and call the cops about Serpicos employees.

LOL, Tim. "You'll need the water." I want small businesses to thrive too. But, Subway uses really poor quality of ingredients (especially the lunch meat). And, how can you make a tasty steak sub without a grill? They nuke everything....ugh. My money is good. Just want what I spend it on to be the same.
Tim
11:58 am on Thursday, February 2, 2012
oh yeah, I'd never recommend a hot sub there. I don't mind their club though.
As far as needing the water, that applies universally for subs. Holy cow, a sub from Canella's (comparatively) is even more salty and probably 50% more calories.
Now, it tastes like 100-150% better, but there are trade-offs for it.

thought you were talking about how dry a sub would be without the mayo...... I generally don't think of a sub as healthy eating. It's a once in awhile taste treat, at least if I don't get it from Subway. Everything in moderation. Life's short.
Tim
12:11 pm on Thursday, February 2, 2012
Indeed, moderation is the key to any diet!
On said club sub, the last time I ate one, I added vinegar (no calories) and a light amount of oil.
You could also do mustard as well, it's effectively calorie free as well.
Honestly, for my couple of fast food meals a week I tend to hit up Chic-Fil-A by far the most. Several options available and easily keep you under 600 cal.
