You know, I agree Sylvia, what I'd like to know, however, is this:
OK, so two dog parks have already received funding. How much? What year was this?
Additionally, it is stated a third one is 'planned' and 'receiving funding'. Which one is this? How much?
Ultimately, I don't believe the county should be funding these at all in the present economic climate. However...I'm not supporting WE should get screwed while others aren't.
This article, and the opinion one written previously on this, both need to produce more specifics to back their case.

The Dundalk area has a dog park that has been approved for funding.
The economic climate argument is an interesting one. Clearly the County has revenues coming in and a portion of that is set aside for Parks & Recreation Capital Projects. In addition the state has Program Open Space funds collected from a portion or the real estate transfer tax and some of that is distributed to the Counties with its use very restricted.
It is a matter of priority of projects, not a matter of the economic climate I believe.

Paul - I agree its a matter of priorities. We've had this argument before though. I won't rehash it.
I'll simply reiterate that I don't support ANY dog park funding by our county - however if they are funding, I certainly support and demand Perry Hall Park's fair share.

The last dog park we lived near had about 30 regular users. So if this one has 70 dogs, that's $1000/dog -- sounds like a gov't project to me.
The county already gave the land, users should have to pay a fee. For example my son last week wanted to play on the astroturf field and I told him he couldn't, only kids on teams ($55/per kid per season) can play on that field. Dog owners should at least have to do the same.

That's good to know they may be paying $35/year at least, but that sounds low, maybe should be higher or per dog.

I would gladly pay a fee for each of my dogs. We already know that we have a yearly fee to pay. I go to the park all year round even in the coldest weather. Where is everyone else? They only come when the weather is nice. I have contributed to every fundraiser and so have many other dog owners that utilize the park all yr long.

So Lois why not keep the park the way it is? Why make it worse so all these idiots come out.

I would gladly pay of fee for my dogs to use the Dog Park!! I would love to take them to socialize and run more, but don't because there is no fence for safety. Fundraising would also help cut the needed costs, would gladly participate in that too. It is always a great feature to any park. My nephew just moved here from out of state and was asking where are all the dog parks??

I wish the group luck, but through the private fundraising route. For public financing my priority is getting a $400 window AC unit in my son's classroom.
I've gone to Beef & Beer fundraisers for other people's kids' travel soccer, those things seem good for over $5 grand. Hopefully the new volume at the park causes them to install a turn lane into and out of the busy parking lot.

I just want everyone in the community to know that every year the recreational programs struggle for enough gym space for our children's indoor activities. As a basketball coordinator, I must limit the number of girls I can take in my program because there are not enough gyms available for practice and play. I understand a dog park costs far less than a gym, but I would not want it to be a priority over our children's needs.

Some people around here seem to think just the opposite.

Now you're talking Shawne - renovate the PHHS gym by blowing out the back wall and double its size to match the population explosion since it was built.
but what were we talking about, oh yeah, free range dogs, I sympathize as a past dog owner, good community perk to have, but prone to free riders. I'm surprised a strip mall doesn't provide a fenced dog park the same way mcDonalds have the play areas, nudge nudge area businesses.

I love the concept of a dog park, BUT the quoted price they were given is completely absurd! Rebels dog park in Harford County was build for $5000 and volunteers helped guild it and still help maintain it. Last year, with donated money and materials they completely repaired and doubled up much of the fencing... and the work was done by Harford County prisoners monitored by two guards in the early morning.
Why can't the Perry Paw Park use more options like this?
The best dog park in the whole state to me is in Howard County (by Ellicott City). Worthington Dog Park is huge and is monitored and up-kept by volunteers. There is an annual fee of $50 or you can pay $5 a day by honor box. No special locks or key codes... honor system. The park during the spring through fall has volunteers which monitor the park and check for passes or day receipts.
Why can't Perry Paw Park be like this? Low cost and monitored and up-kept by the very public who use it (volunteers).

someone show me that budget: $70,000?? Are they trying to buy the land? why is it so expensive?

Tracey, if you have a fence around your yard and you have the average one-fifth of an acre lot for a single family home in Perry Hall that is about 8,000 square feet. or about 60 foot x 135 feet in size. That would be about 390 total feet of fence. Imagine a 6 foot high chain link fence around your yard, what do you think your would pay to have that fence installed with three gates? The site for the dog park is almost two acres and needs about 1,500 feet of six foot high fence, 9,000 square feet of fence. That is just the fence, nothing else in the park, no watering stations, no baggy stations, no benches, no play toys.
Just so you know, a quarter of an acre of build-able land in Perry Hall right now is worth about $200,000.
