Boscov's wrapped up a weekend of festivities with donations and a ribbon-cutting to mark the re-opening of their store in White Marsh Mall.

The 200,000-square-foot department store opened to great fanfare, too, with the help of Perry Hall High School's marching band on Sunday morning.

There were actually two ribbon-cuttings on Sunday: the official one—led by actress Shirley Jones—and another ribbon with $100 bills affixed to it that represented $1,000 in donations by Boscov's to the United Way of Central Maryland. Baltimore-area United Way affiliates did those honors. A nonprofit gala held at the store on Friday was expected to raise $25,000 for area organizations.

The new store employs 330—some of whom, chairman Albert Boscov said, worked at the original store in White Marsh Mall, which closed in 2008.

Several other performers, including a jazz soloist, were scheduled for the rest of Sunday. Jones (of "The Partridge Family" fame) is slated to perform in the store's auditorium twice each day through next Saturday.

So Shirley Jones enjoys a late dinner following her second show and with the first sip of her dinky-poo she sighs and says to herself, "well, its down to this: supermarket and department store openings".

Perhaps she enjoys sharing her talents with others, finding it to be a better way to spend her time than sitting around casting sarcastic aspersions on the accomplishments of people she's never met.

Great comment Mark. I have always liked Shirley Jones. I will be going to Boscov's on Monday nite to see her 7PM performance. I would rather see Shirley Jones do shows at store openings than doing shows for political candidates that spectators pay hundreds of dollars as a political contribution. You go girl!

Overheard at White Marsh Mall:
Shirley Jones: "Thank you everyone, you are a great audience. I'm here all week, don't forget about the white sale in the linen section. Take an extra 15% off with your Boscov's card."

Reuben Kincade: "Come on Shirley, we need to get to the gig at the Salvo Auto Parts grand opening. The Partridge Family bus is waiting for us outside the food court entrance."

Does anybody know if she did an extended version of 'Free Bird' at the end of her show? If so, I'm there.

Kind of off topic, but Ms Jones' family owns Jones Brewing Company in Smithton, PA. Many years ago when I was going to school outside of Pittsburgh, we trekked up there regularly to buy beer right from the brewery (they make Stoney's Beer). In March of 1979 (I think), she was in Smithton for her birthday and was visiting the family brewery. She was quite entertaining as she told stories of growing up in Smithton. She was also selected as Miss Pittsburgh around 1950

It is a great little place, kind of like Mayberry. Fishing is good there, too.

I really enjoyed seeing Shirley Jones today! The store is really nice with good prices. Happy to see the store back at White Marsh Mall. Several new stores in our area are creating jobs!
