It's possible that Honeygo Boulevard's median strip would have been mowed Tuesday morning, with or without the passionate response from community members the day before.

According to County Councilman David Marks, the area had already been slated for trimming, following complaints from area homeowners' associations to Marks' office last week.

Regardless, less than 20 hours after Patch published the article, Grass Too Tall in Perry Hall? (and more than 40 comments later), Baltimore County contractors were seen clipping the turf between Joppa and Belair roads along Honeygo.

On Monday, resident Shirley Smith vented some of her frustration on Patch about the overgrowth.

"In Perry Hall, we pay too much in taxes to put up with this eyesore. It just looks terrible," Smith said.

"It's tall and brown. People throw trash in there. The next thing you know, we'll have rats," she added. 

Other community members chimed in in the comments.

Honeygo Hal wrote, "The appearance issue is not exactly trivial - for the locals' community pride as well as first and lingering impressions by visitors. I, for one, would rather not have my community looking all ragged."

Jim Jones countered, "Tall grass in a median strip on a major street does not lead to rats and the downfall of the community. It is the people tossing trash on the ground that does this. If it's that much of an issue that is making it hard for you to sleep at night, go cut it yourself, I am sure the county would not care."

Neither (D) or (R) brought up safety issues, "Food for thought: Tall, brown (dried) out grass and weeds are very dangerous when it comes to brush fires. ... Putting out these fires cost much more than just cutting the grass once a week."

The debate continued into Tuesday, until community members began to notice the area had been cut.

Marks said he was glad to see a fast response from the county on the grass, but he urged patience from neighbors of county property.

"Personally, I try to mow my grass once a week, but these are tight times. Areas may not always be mowed as often as we'd like," he said.

Marks said concerned residents can call his office at 410-887-3384 to share concerns about tall grass on county property in the future.

Residents may also call 410-887-3827, and an operator within the county executive's office will direct them to the appropriate constituent services representative. If the problem is on private property, residents should call 410-887-3351 for Code Inspections and Enforcement.
