Pint-Sized Football Players Win State Championship
The Perry Hall 6-8 Gators rec team won the Division II Maryland Youth Football State Championship on Sunday.
More than a dozen tough-looking kids claimed a recreational football state title on Sunday.
Under the direction of head coach Chris Halford, the Perry Hall 6-8 Gators won the Division II Maryland Youth Football State Championship, according to parent Kristi Halford.
The team had a total of 13 wins and one loss this season, Halford wrote in an email to Patch.
How did your child's rec team play this season? Tell us in the comments.

Thank you for profiling our children. They worked very hard all season and it's amazing to have them to be recognized by the Perry Hall Patch. All of the parents appreciate your coverage of community events/news in Perry Hall, and are especially happy to see this great news about our winning team!

These boys should be proud of themselves, but these coaches should be ashamed. This team has been one of the most controversial teams ever to play in the league. These young boys played the way they should, but the coaches had them playing in an inappropriate division. These boys were playing 6-8, while almost all of them should have been on the 7-9 team, and they were playing in division II, when Perry Hall rec should have had them in division I. While these parent coaches were using their children to win some trophy, they did them a disservice by not allowing them to compete with their peers. Shame on you coaches, and shame on Perry Hall for allowing them to do this.

Nothing new. My son played football at Perry Hall Rec from 2003 to 2006. They had the "A" teams playing in the "B" division back then so they could win championships. The "B" teams were playing in the "A" division and getting embarassed.

Tim - I have coached at Perry Hall since 1996. You say that B teams were loaded up to win championships from 2003 to 2006. During that time Perry Hall was the most dominate program in the league winning many Division 1 championships. Each of those 4 seasons PH had no less then 3 teams in the Division 1 championship game (out of 6 age groups). They won at least two championship each of those seasons and won 3 of the 6 league championships in two of those seasons. You don't win that many Division 1 championships by putting the best talent on the B teams. But when you have that much talent at the A level many of your B teams also win championships in their division.
Perry Hall's A teams are currently in Division 2 in the league and the state tournament. This is still a division of nothing but A teams. Perry Hall B teams play in Division 4. The league and tournament choose your division placement, not the program or rec council.

Yes, these boys were playing well below the level they should have been at, but by the time the right people found out, it was too late. You can not blame the children, or take away the rest of their season because of a "mistake" made by one of their parents. In the future people will be held accountable for their actions, and we will not allow this to happen again.

Everyone should get the facts straight before posting ridiculous comments. All of the boys are 8 yr olds. PH wanted to play in the first division for their league and thec state tournament but neither would allow it. These coaches work their butts off all year to teach theses kids the fundamentals. PH is actually one of the few programs that don't recruit.
I'm so tired of people complaining about people who volunteer in their community. Most who complain have never given even an hour of their time much less coach a team through a season like this. These kids worked hard as did their parents and coaches putting in hours of time on the field and off. You all should be ashamed to tarnish the reputation of these good people just because of things you hear or based on an individual experience.

I am not guilty. I am a wife of a guy who selflessly gives of himself to coach football. He has been for 15 years and I will be damned if some jerks who don't know what they are talking about try to ruin his reputation. I'd like to see some of you work your full time job, coach a sport as intense as football and run the entire football program. He took over 2 yrs ago so any problems you had have nothing to do with him Without him PH's football program would be non-existent.
While you all are in your lazboy watching tv or on summer vacation he's fielding calls from 300 parents, coaches for 25 teams, organizing registrations , ordering equipment AND preparing to coach a team.
If you think you can do it better I invite you to volunteer to help out. Then maybe my husband and I would have time to go out to dinner or take our kids on a day trip. Think before you start saying terrible things about good people. These coaches are all husbands and dads with families who read these awful posts. The people hiding behind these screen names should be ashamed of themselves.

I rarely post comments on Patch because I do not think it is generally the best forum for a productive discussion, but I feel compelled to weigh in for the sole purpose of requesting that people consider the tone and content of the posts on this article. The purpose of the article was to highlight the achievement of a team of kids who worked hard and won a championship. Please don't let accusations and name calling to overshadow that accomplishment. It would be nice if the parents of the members of the team could print this article and save it for them, without comments undermining their accomplishment. By the way, I have no interest in this issue other than trying to prevent the negativity from consuming what is a positive article and trying to avoid having some of these comments reflect poorly upon the community.

My son has played on this team for the last three years, and I am proud of what he has learned from our coaches, our parents, and his teammates. I had absolutely no interest in football when he started, but I personally have learned so much about the game by being a part of this league. Our boys have grown tremendously on and off the field over the last three seasons. Win or lose any game - - everyone is a winner. It is what we preach and teach our children. I believe people are entitled to form their own opinions, but let's be adults here. Unless you personally were a part of this team, it is not fair to mis-judge. We can certainly learn a thing or two from our boys about respect, maturity, and the definition of the words 'good sportsmanship'. I plan to ignore ALL of the inappropriate comments and appreciate all of the positive comments people wish to leave on this blog. Gators Fam.....not necessary to get bent out of shape over something like this. congrats to the PH Gators for their win. PH certainly fields good A teams. Unfortunately, they are detrimental to their B and C teams, which they seem not to care very much about. However, the coaches of the B and C teams take just as much time in the preparation as the A coaches. What I have witnessed year after year is that PH is only about winning. They cherry pick for the first three weeks the children they want for the A team and leave the rest to the B,C teams. Thus, these B and C teams usually have anywhere between 7 and 10 more boys on the team, making it much more difficult to coach and to win. At these age levels it should be about fundamentals of football, learning the game and learning to love the game. Not just about the win. I know my sons football team certainly could have won every game if it was all about playing the starters, but our coach thoughtfully played every player equally and fairly. Each boy learned the fundamentals and was able to put what he learned into practice during game time. I am very proud of our coach, the coaching staff and all of the boys from our team, even without winning every game. And if given the chance to play again with eachother and their coaches will see the same success as the A teams.

Finally a well thought out complaint about the 'system'.
Not the kids, or their accomplishments, or the coaches that coach them.
However, I'm going to go on record as saying that IF this is true about "cherry picking" players, then it would surprise me more if this didn't happen - universally in youth sports. Some folks volunteer to coach youth sports for the right reasons. Not all of them do.
I personally find it absolutely ridiculous that there are 'state championships' at this age group. Seriously Maryland (because PH is just part of this deranged system)? These are just little kids. Start this Championship stuff in middle school when the kids are a bit more mature.
Youth Sports up through age 10 should be 100% about learning and growing a love for the game, without the pressures of winning or losing. Sure, have games, have winners and losers but don't keep track of it. It's irrelevant to what youth sports at this age should be about.
I speak from a little first hand experience - I've coached both midgets (15-16) and Squirts (8-10) in ice hockey in my distant past. They were each coached much differently.

Stomp - All rec football programs separate their players in this manner.
The A teams play in a higher division playing other A teams. The teams that they play carry each programs best athletes who typically also have the most experience.
The B and C teams are in a division where they play against other B and C teams. The teams in the B and C teams division contain players new to football and players who may not be able to athletically play at the A team level. The B and C teams are not meant to be played at the competitive level as the A teams. A fair comparison would be the travel baseball team and the in house baseball league.
I believe you are wrong about the win first mentality at the cost of fundamentals and fun. My team was successful against much more athletic teams because they were fundamentally sound. I also don't think any of my players would say that they didn't have fun playing football this season.
Tim
1:29 pm on Wednesday, December 21, 2011
Chris: I hear your opinion. I would suspect your kids would have a biased opinion, considering their environment. If you can (and do) coach a team that honestly has fun and loves the game when they go 2-7, well then you've done them right.
We can just agree to disagree about the age/competition thing.
I just personally believe self improvement and enjoyment is way more paramount at that age. Kids get pushed way too hard (and way too early) to "succeed" in the eyes of a scoreboard.
The 7-8 year olds I taught liked winning when they did, but despite the best efforts of a couple of overactive/ridiculous parents, I helped the little ones realize they could be proud of their effort as long as they tried their best.

I am really trying not to let the ignorant, petty people who keep bashing the success of not only this team, and these coaches, get to me. I realize that sore loser adults produce sore loser children.
We have had someone say we are "losers", another say that they expect our children to become "troubled adults" and others say that we have a team that encourages cheating and dishonesty. Very few people outside of the parents on the team have bothered to speak up for these children and this accomplishment.
This is an incredible statement on the ignorance of those who prefer to hide behind anonymous user names to criticize those who use their time to serve the community. This is also typical of poorly educated, self-centered, confrontational people who make themselves and their teams look ridiculous. Some of the same ones commenting, repeatedly, are the ones who never made anything of themselves and attempt (or attempted 30 yrs ago) to live vicariously through their children. Here's a tip: teach your children to be good students, good servants in the community, good citizens and good people. That's what we do at Perry Hall.

Tim,
I've been involved with the Rec programs at Perry Hall and White Marsh for over ten years. I strongly disagree with you regarding the issue of keeping track of wins/losses. First, I'm pretty sure that every sports program withing these Rec councils offer Clinic programs for kids ages 4-7. The clinics offer parents such as yourself exactly what you demand relative to instruction without the competitiveness.
I've coached clinic teams with my kids, and I found that by age 7, most kids are ready to experience competition. Some parents move their kids into the 8-10 age groups, because their kids have learned the fundamentals and developed the skills necessary to compete.
Meanwhile, I've coached in every other age group besides clinic at both the Rec level and travel level. Their are just as many postive lessons to be learned from losing as opposed to winning. Winning and losing is not just about a team's record, it's about whether the players are getting Positive Reinforcement from the coaches and parents. Theirs's nothing positive about blaming the other coaches just because they appear to be a stacked team. A good coach and parent will rehash the positives from the loss or from previous games!....................
Marshall

.......Tim,
As for the issue of having a "State" level tournament, I see no problem with "travel" teams participating in any tournament whether it's local or state. Travel teams are supposed to be for kids with the best skills to represent their local area Rec Councils, or towns. Travel teams are called "Travel" teams, because they travel to play in tournaments.
As for coaches "Cherry Picking" their teams, I am confused. If a coach asks a child to play for his travel team, and the parent and child allows for this to occur, what's the issue? As a coach, I've lost many kids to travel and club teams. As much as I would have loved for those kids to play for my team, I wouldn't be doing those kids any justice by denying them their right to succeed with other opportuniities.
Finally, for those parents who commented about whether or not this football team belongs in their respective age group, unless a parent forged a birth certificate, the kids on this team were eligible to play in this age group. Also, the argument of "A" level verses "B" level should be determined by the league commissioner or governing authority. Since this team was allowed to play in the league or tournament for which they are now state champs, we should be celebrating their accomplishments. So here's to the state champion Perry Hall Gators 6-8 Gators, congratulations!

Most of your counterarguments weren't directed at me, as I didn't complain about them all. To be fair, there are two 'Tims" that post on here. Mine usually has a Darth Vader avatar by his name...but sometimes it doesn't show up on some threads. No idea why, other then this being a terrible AOL product.
Consistent with my previous views, I consider travel teams inappropriate under age 9 or 10. Believe me, I understand how the system works. Not in maryland, but Virginia.
I also had no issue with the A/B/C teams. Only when the B team is loaded with A team players, and vice versa. I don't know if it applied here, it appears not.
My stance on this has been, and always will be, that young kids, like these above, should be focused on learning a love for the game itself at this age. Not thrust into ridiculous competitions by overzealous parents wanting to justify their sports investments in their child (which happens at all ages, not just little ones).
If you're a coach Marshall, then you've seen this first hand.
I have and do congratulate them on their achievement. I just feel the whole process is poor for the proper development of little children and sports. Enforcing winning and losing at this age group is poor, and no one will convince me otherwise. Little kids don't need this kind of pressure put on them.

I don't understand those who complain about cherry - picking players. there's a reason there's an A, B, and C team. players need to play up to their potential and opppnents' level...otherwise they could get hurt. it's no different than major league baseball having a farm system...it's also no different than having GIfted and Talented programs in the schools. if you put someone who doesnt have the skills or knowledge to excel in an advanced program, then they are being set up for failure.

Our wrestling program, boys and girls lacrosse, and basketball have been told directly from other teams and organizers that Perry Hall is no longer welcome because of the football cheating scandal. Now the parents of the 6-8 gators team may not be effected by this because there kids don't play other sports (They are too busy taking steroids and learning how to steal hub caps), but the rest of the community is pretty pissed off at you guys! Thanks!

Paul: I'm curious. How exactly did they cheat? What did they do wrong?
What rec council are you involved with, and is it similar to the one this team is involved with?

Is this for real? Is everyone in Perry Hall this insecure? Who cares. Good lord. There are injustices every where. This argument is so stupid. Doesn't anyone have anything better to do? In reality, this thread is no different than moaning about the speed of the check-out person in the grocery store line - you're going to go through the line, you're going to moan about it, you're going to say you're never coming back and then you will be back in three days. Just stop. You're a bunch of cowards hiding behind the computer. If you want to do something about the problem, do something, but don's just sit behind your computer and moan. Get out of your chair and make an effort. The coaches are not coaching from behind a computer. The people who administer the leagues are doing so in person - spending real personal time to do it. Stop moaning or do something. Stop being losers. You make me want to move.
