Police: Woman, Children Nearly Carjacked in White Marsh
A man attempted to take a woman's purse and keys outside Five Guys on Campbell Boulevard.
Police are crediting a woman's fast reaction and concerned community members with stopping a carjacking in White Marsh Monday evening.
At about 6:26 p.m. on Nov. 12, outside Five Guys in the 5200 block of Campbell Boulevard, a man pulled a woman out of her vehicle with her purse. He implied that he had a gun and demanded her car keys. The woman's 2-year-old and 4-year-old children were secured in the back seat, according to a police report.
The woman refused to give the man her keys and started yelling. Some concerned community members started gathering around her vehicle. The man then ran away, according to Lt. David Naimaster of the White Marsh police precinct.
Police do not believe the man knew there were children in the back of the car when he attempted the carjacking, Naimaster said.
Police are reviewing video surveilance footage and the incident remains under investigation. The suspect is described as a black man in his early 20s, 6-foot 1-inch tall, with a thin build and wearing black pants and a blue plaid shirt, according to a police report.
Anyone with information on the suspect is asked to call the White Marsh precinct at 410-887-5000.

well isn't this just great. seems there is an incident as least once a week in that area and now with the holiday season gearing up it could get worse.
however i am glad the lady and her children are okay.

Thank GOD concerned citizens got involved. I am glad this woman had the hindsight to start screaming and people came to her rescue. This is usually a busy area with lots of people. I know if I heard someone screaming, I would immediately go to see what was happening. Wue all have to become involved to help or report suspicious activity. Please be on guard and call the police of anything looks out of the norm.

I disagree with the statement that the perp did not know there were kids in the car. It seems common for them to jack cars w/kids. If someone in the crowd had a carry permit then this guy would not be out there looking for another victim.

John, I have asked this question a hundred time and no one has ever been able to give me an answer that is satisfactory. I grew up in the Moravia Road area. My family used public transportation for downtown jobs and private school transport. We walked at night alone or in groups, never worrying for our safety. We left our doors open during the day and played outside all the time. Drive down through that area now, park your car at night and go for a walk alone. As you pass the flashing blue light police cameras, gangs on the street, trash everywhere, depreciated, unkempt properties, reports of shootings, muggings and rapes, someone tell me why it was better "back then". I never, ever heard of crime like this before the stupid buses came up here, plain and simple. It's the truth.

It is also related to single mothers raising 5 children with no daddy present, the glorification of drugs, the attitude of too many people who feel like the world owes them and the lack of personal responsibily and moral sense. What a mess. Thank you Martin Omalley for straightening out the city before you left. And to Shelia Dixon for setting such a glowing example for our youth. And also thank you to all those in charge of the city government who have used their lack of morals to line their pockets.

It's unknown if this case was related to bus passengers, but I think that we should have 100% video taping of passengers getting on and off the public transportation, and no one is allowed on unless the camera can get a full face shot. At least it would help deal with violence on the bus itself.

who honestly knows what can be done short of increasing a police presence in public areas like this. its such a shame because the PH/WM area can be great and is such a location of convenience with shopping, restaurants, and a short drive to Baltimore. The crime migrating out of the city and to the suburbs is disheartening. I saw a post the other day from someone citing research that states crime is not related to public transportation but I would be willing to bet there is also research to support the other side (the side we all see and believe resulted in the story above).

He had to come to the mall on a bus otherwise, why would this loser be highjacking a car. I think the breakdown of the family and drugs cause a lot of crime. If parents taught kids responsibility and morals, I believe this might deter some kids going into a life a crime. Some kids look to the "streets" for attention they are not receiving at home. Sad this attention is with individuals involved in crime. I like the idea of video surveilance on buses. In fact, I think most buses have cameras so maybe the police should start there.

Now that the courts have ruled that Maryland has to stop violating our most basic right of self defense, maybe we're on our way to stopping this stuff. The criminal-loving democrats who run this state will wait to the last second to appeal, they'll lose again, they'll appeal again in a last attempt to continue protecting criminals, they'll lose a final time, and then we will gain back the right that almost all the other states already have. Once these thugs start getting shot they'll reconsider coming out here.

Get off your high horses. The politics are over. Let's just be grateful the woman and her family are ok. You can't blame public transportation for anything. In my eyes of you use the bus you are more motivated than alot of people. How many don't work because they don't have a car? Would you? So many people complain complain complain but do nothing to help society. O, wait, don't tell me, you voted, right? Unfortunate things happen anywhere and everywhere. Would you expect millionaires to embezzle money, take advantage of the poor and leave families without income? Don't judge people by their color, clothes, income, nor means of transportation. Love people instead.

Get off my high horse? I took public transportation for years! First to school as a teen for years since I didn't have access to school buses. Then, I took buses as a young high school graduate working my first job downtown and then to a closer college as my career expanded. During this time, I saved up my money and then bought a car. I would use public transportation if I needed to get to my job sure. I am not judging anyone by their color, clothes, income nor how they get around. I am stating that crime has increased because the opportunity for SOME bad people to use it to access areas they normally wouldn't access has increased the chances of things happening. You're right, crime does happen everywhere. Hopefully, we will have the right to carry soon and can send these people home in a box, rather than the bus. Then transportation won't be an issue. Oh and you're darn right if I was that mother and someone was trying to take MY children AND I had the right to carry. I wouldn't hesitate to exercise my rights.

Chris, you are way off base. There are many charitable organizations that will help a family INSTEAD of going out and committing a crime. My family grew up very poor and depended on family members for food and used clothing. We also worked from 15 years old to this day. We also took a Baltimore City bus to school and to our jobs. NOBODY in my family ever committed a crime. Crime is an easy way to get what you want and should punished by jail. No if and or but!

Chris Harris sounds like one of those forced contribution/redistribution types. no idea why you sympathize with the thugs that "don't have a car" and that we should "love people" that mug women but thanks to this thread I've learned from comments the fact that crime is much lower away from the bus stops - I did not realize that when I moved to PH. Now I'll look for stores that have no bus stops nearby. Starting to feel like the muggings in this vicinity are increasing. 50 million people in America on food stamps and growing.

I know I sound like a broken record people. But, the White Marsh Mall area is no longer safe. I have refused to go there for quite some time, and haven't done any Christmas shopping there in several years. In fact, all of my Christmas shopping is now done online.
After our Thanksgiving weekend excursion to The Avenue, a couple of years ago, to take in the holiday evening ambiance, there is no way that we would ever go to that Christmas Tree Lighting. I'd love to. But, maybe I'll be able to do those kinds of things in our next neighborhood. We fled Baltimore City 25+ years ago, and now we will be spending the money we have saved for retirement to flee Baltimore County. Leaving Perry Hall is a no brainer, but the whole county has become a dump, with the exception of a few high income areas that are completely surrounded by dumps.

Do the buses run all day and night?
Maybe they should limit the bus schedules to commuter times only. Maybe 6am to 6 or 7pm. Maybe that would help with the night time crime.
I went to the avenue a few years ago to see a movie with family. The mobs of foul mouthed people loitering in that area has kept me from returning.
I agree that the breakdown of the family unit has caused many of these issues.
But what can be done about it? As long as the government rewards people for negative behavior, these issues will only get worse.
Social Security payments and other entitlements are given to drug addicts because they are unable or unwilling to work. Many unmarried women have children in order to increase the amount of government assistance.
Where do we draw the line on entitlements?

More black crime. I am not a racist but it seems more and more like the crime here is done by black people both male and femaile. We do need to shut down the public transportation or have a video camera inside buses that can see the faces of everyone who enters. We need to track them so if they commit a crime we can find them easier. Dude is lucky i was not there because he would never had gotten away. Shoot first ask questions later. If you don't like my comment to bad.

I also believe that a lot of the crime in this area increased when 43 was opened up. The hard working people of the Essex/Middle River area have seen their neighborhoods overtaken by thugs and addicts over the past 15-20 years. I was truly concerned when 43 was opened up because I knew it would become an easy access, for the thugs, into the Perry Hall/White Marsh area. And, I believe that fear has come to life. Look to the East, and look to the South. That is our future in just a very short time.

Yet, I am always looking over my shoulder and feel uneasy when I shop in Baltimore County or when I rarely go into Baltimore City. Truth be told, crime is UP in Baltimore County and so are murders. I feel in 10 years, this side of Baltimore County will be as bad as Randallstown. I am looking to leave Md because I feel nothing is going to change with the political climate in Md. I have given up.

Parkvillehoney, You are not alone. Many people feel the same way as you. teech...I feel for you since you can't leave your house for fear of random crime. Like Heather indicated crime does not have a race, color, sex, or location. I don't go around anywhere thinking I WILL be the victim of a crime. I actually have no problem walking around and supporting our local businesses any time of day or night that they are open. We actually went downtown to eat yesterday at Chazz and felt safe enough to walk around the neighborhood and believe it or not nothing happened.
I don't know what country you live in, but in the country I've given service to and love with all my heart; parents teach their children they are owed nothing but an opportunity. Parents teach that education is the key to unlocking opportunity. Parents hope that their children will be more successful than themselves. This bond of teaching children these lessons stretches across all socioeconomic sectors and races. I'm sorry that you appear to know or have heard of stories of parents that teach differently.
For every one story of bad parenting, there are thousands of parents that teach the lessons above. Please open you mind and realize that bad people are in smaller numbers than you think and most people just want to live their lives and support their families. Just like you and I do.

Smart guy....I speak from experience having been an educator...hence the name "teech". I taught in Baltimore County for almost 30 years and I agree that many parents do teach their children to respect education. But too many do not.
The statistics support this factually. Check the high school drop out rate in the city.
Check the food stamp program, welfare recipients, crime rate etc. in the city. And going to Chazz downtown does not give a true indication of city life or your bravery. Why don't you go take your family on a walk through Leakin Park (they have nice new trails there), night or day and see how safe you are. (You may end up in Loudon Park.) Parents "teach by example". And their examples demonstrate a life of no morals, blame the other guy, government handouts and the like. In fact, just drive through the city and observe the trashy neighborhoods. I live in America, and love this country as much as you do. BUT America has and continues to change. And we are well on the way to socialism where we are controlled by the gov't. But that is another sad, dangerous issue. And by the way...I too support my local business and actually do go out of my home on occasion. I wear my body armour covered of course by my bio-hazard suit. Wake up and take off your rose colored specs. CHAZZ.....really.....safe.......hahahahahahahahahaha!

The entitlements .... Have made it ok to provide no correction for bad behavior, no disincentive to make babies that you teach nothing to involving everything from morality, respect for human life , integrity, work ethic and the list goes on. If the powers that be say it is "unethical" to pass judgement on those who are running "baby farms" to get more in their check, then all I can say is, they don't care anything about kids. The person who tried to hijack a car was only a short time ago a little kid. He wasn't born to be a criminal, he had plenty to eat growing up, probably a home , but what he didn't have was any sort if guidance in life. That's what this wonderful world of entitlements has done. Kept people's lives in squalor, maybe not in the hungry and cold sense, but in having any meaning or purpose or contributing one good thing to society. This person will most certainly be a "drain" on more taxpayer resources as we pay for his defense or pay for his rehab or methadone for the rest if his life. I work at a job where I can say for sure if there are not changes this whole area will be over run by this sort of criminal activity.
