UPDATE: 1,200 Power Outages Hit Seven Courts, Cause Unknown

Baltimore Gas and Electric Company reported more than 600 power outages in the Perry Hall area Monday night.

UPDATE (10:23 p.m.)—Shortly after 9 p.m. Monday, Seven Courts residents began reporting power outages in the Perry Hall area.

As of 9:50 p.m., the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company power outage map showed more than 600 power outages northwest of Belair Road, near the Seven Courts neighborhood.

A BGE representative confirmed that more than 1,200 outages were initially reported in the Seven Courts area. As of 10:20 p.m., more than 600 residents had regained power. Because the outage was caused underground, it is unlikely that it was weather related, the representative said. Its cause remains unknown.

We're off Magledt , near Joppa, and our lights have flickered several times, but are still on.

I am on seven courts, we have been losing power like this monthly, with no known cause. The weather has been flawless each time yet we retain power during each terrible storm. Maybe someone should look into this, it's getting ridiculous.

Heather, I totally agree, we are off Seven Courts too and it has been an ongoing issue. Perhaps we should file a complaint somewhere, I don't see BGE giving any refunds to us..

Yeah I just drove back from my class and saw all those guys out. For once, we were lucky. We're just outside the power outage area. Like, by 2-3 blocks.

I agree. We are on Seven Courts also and have been 'enjoying' the monthly outages recently too. But yet every storm our's stays on. Definitely should be looked into!

It's called BS. In this day and age, solar and wind power should be dominant among our major power sources for our homes just like water should be fuel for our cars. What holds us back from technological advancement? Greed, one of the world's worst evils. We still wipe our butts with paper, how primitive can you get? I'm sure manufacturers of TP would throw a fit if we tried to move on from that to things like bedets. Stop the greed and we'll see advancement, but many big companies don't want advancement because it means the technology that makes them rich would be obsolete. Kind of silly when you think about it.

Mostly agree, Mike.

However, when you have fiascos in fiscal judgment like Solyndra, the 'path of least resistance' becomes so much easier to follow.
It's not our government giving subsidies to alternative energy. That alone I'm OK with. It's the poor judgment utilized in doing so.

Like most of government spending issues, the judgment/allocation of the funds is the problem.

Weather related my ass. There wasn't a drop on the ground nor was there lightning in the sky. Could it be the new developments being built and all the digging that goes along with it? I find it hard to believe that is going on at 9:30 at night.

Quote from above: “Because the outage was caused underground, it is UNLIKELY that it was weather related, the representative said. Its cause remains unknown.”

That's what I get for reading too fast. Thanks for the correction. I still wonder if it is because of the new developments? Infrastructure can't support all the new housing? I don't know how the grid works, but I wish I did.

Yeah, I do it all the time.

I wonder if it has to do with BGE putting in the new main lines. They are doing some serious work. It was on Seven Courts last month, now they are replacing the lines on Proctor.

They are doing all sorts of digging around the SCR traffic circle.

This continually happens in our area. I've talked to BGE numerous times and the answer is always that it was unplanned. Other nearby neighborhoods don't have these issues. Since they wont tell us individually, maybe they will tell someone in the media if investigated.

I live in Fullerton near the Elem school we experience weekly sporadic outages , mostly short ones , a real PITA, since we have to reset appliances and clocks each time. Their response in an email is that Im supposed to document each time duration and date and email them... they gotta have a more modern method to track thier own outages. And I have contacted BGE about clearing tree growth from around their lines going to my house many times and each time they tell me to pay a private tree trimmer. They stopped having regular trimming services yrs ago , a cost cuttting venture along with less avail. repair crews. We've had two major outages in the past years both lasted longer than a week , and service wasnt returned until repair crews came in from other states ... it's a shame and they want to raise our rates too .

Normally I dislike BGE as much as the next person, but they are your trees growing over the lines. If you don’t want to trim them yourself you are the only person who loses power so it’s a tradeoff you need to make. If it were my property, I would have the power cut off, get rid of the trees and put them somewhere else that will not interfere with the lines.

As a BGE rate payer, I am glad they are not using my fees to cut down tree limbs on someone’s property who doesn’t keep up with the regular maintenance of their trees.

I had sent BGE a complaint this summer after experiencing at least 6 outages within a month, none weather-related (heat or storm). I was surprised when they replied by email with some questions and a promise to investigate, shocked when I received a phone call a month later (they actually investigated). They reported how many outages that had occurred in the last couple of years (a staggering number) and said that most were due to underground cable failure. It sounds like most of the work we see being performed in the SCR area is to upgrade this cable. They said it should be complete this fall and greatly reduce the occurrence of these outages. Anything would be an improvement at this point.

I called BGE a month or so ago about the repeated outages during clear weather, when we've had great service for the first 22 years we lived off Seven Courts Dr. They said it was due to the aging underground wires, which are in the process of being replaced. I know they are tearing up a lot of yards with that project, so I hope it gets done soon.
