Rep. Andy Harris said 25 hours was enough notice for those with a "burning desire to come out and say something."

Readers asked and Patch got the answer.

When Congressman Andy Harris announced his Monday meeting with about a day's notice, some readers were disappointed with the last-minute scheduling. But the Republican representative's staff said the shorter notice is about protecting the congressman's safety.

Follow Perry Hall Patch on Facebook and Twitter.

A media advisory announcing a town hall meeting with Harris was released 25 hours before the meeting was expected to begin at 5 p.m. Monday at the Kingsville Volunteer Fire Company.

Automatic phone calls to Kingsville and North Perry Hall residents announcing the meeting occurred within two hours after the media advisory was sent out.

Some readers commented that they would have liked to attend a meeting with Maryland's First District congressman, had they been given more notice.

Read a live blog of the meeting, LIVE BLOG: Rep. Harris Talks Debt at Kingsville Town Hall Meeting.

During the meeting, Harris said that his office "didn't send out the press notice in time," but that the automatic phone calls were released as scheduled.

"Our feeling is that if we call people up too far ahead of time, they'll forget," he said.

When asked if he believed more people would have attended the meeting had they been given more notice, he said, "That's possible, but if people really have a burning desire to come out and say something, they'll come out and say something."

Toward the end of the meeting Harris said another meeting was planned for the Perry Hall area on Dec. 19.

"How's that for advanced notice?" he said.

One of the congressman's assistants confirmed that a meeting is planned for Dec. 19 between 2-3 p.m. at the Perry Hall Library

Harris' office gave about 30 hours notice before holding a town hall meeting at Chapel Hill Elementary School in Perry Hall in March. His office gave less than 24 hours notice before another event at the Perry Hall Safeway later that week.

Following the March meeting, Ryan Nawrocki, Harris' press secretary, said it was standard practice for the office to only give 24-48 hours notice to community members and media before events.

"We want to be as accessible as possible," said Nawrocki. "But since Gabby Giffords, we have to consider safety."

Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot during an event at a Safeway in January. While she survived the assassination attempt, six others were killed and 13 people were injured.

When asked if giving short notice to constituents in the name of safety was worth fewer people attending events, Nawrocki said, "It's a fine line between safety and openness in government."

Would town hall meetings be better attended if members of Congress gave more advanced notice? Tell us in the comments.

Even though the actions (or inaction) of Congress is a very important issue, many of Mr. Harris' constituents do have a life that includes other commitments. Most people don't include "Will my congressman announce a Town Hall within the next 24-48 hours" in their daily planning. On the other hand, it may be telling that his office is only concerned with those that have a "burning desire" to attend. Coincidently, short notice tends to lead to low attendance and his ability to say that his constituents are not concerned with how he and the House are doing.
The opposite of 'pro' is 'con', which suggests that the opposite of Progress is Congress.

It appears to me that Mr Representative is attempting to limit the number of his constituents that have access to him. I have been in contact with his office after every email he sends out. Attached to my responses are my name, address and phone number. I have never received a robocall announcing a community meeting.

This is the email I received yesterday: Rep. Andy Harris Statement on the Super Committee

"I'm disappointed that the Super Committee wasn't able to achieve even the minimal amount of deficit reduction," said Rep. Andy Harris. "Committee members like John Kerry refused to cut spending and instead tried to increase taxes on American job creators by one trillion dollars. Their unwillingness to compromise on tax increases will put us on a one-way path to a European-style debt crisis."

Compromise is a two-sided effort. Democrats refuse to cut taxes without some revenue enhancement and Republican absolutely refuse to allow any tax benefits to the top income makers to expire. Like I said COMPROMISE means both side give a little. Its obvious from his statement that he is also unwilling to compromise.

My priorities are to my 5 year old. As a Mom, I would think you would appreciate this.
If I had been given actual advanced notice, I could have at least tried to make arrangements so I could attend.
Additionally, I "usually" have a flexible work schedule. If I knew it was a 5pm meeting a couple days in advance, I could get myself out of work early.

Finally, having a meeting in the middle of rush hour is the epitome of stupidity.
Then again, they all do fail at governing, just as we failed by voting them in.

Rest assured, my top priority will be voting Mr. Harris out next fall.

MD Mom: Wrong, the middle to upper middle class creates jobs more then either.
Businesses hire more people because....wait for it...wait for it...there's DEMAND.

Government can facilitate an environment that allows for better demand, however it's tricky. They can go overboard, and at this point in time, they absolutely have.

I agree with Trish - if they were giving away Ravens tickets, the place would have been packed. I didn't find out about the meeting until 2:30pm when I read it in the Patch and I rearranged my evening schedule to go. I felt it was important to hear what he had to say. I understand not everyone can do that, but I believe that most times it comes down to priorities and your choice.

To Andy Harris, NOTHING should be more important than his communication with his constituents. And to schedule a meeting with his "employers" with only 25 hours' notice is the height of conceit.
Next thing you know, he'll want a "Popemobile".

For those that couldn't make the meeting last night, one can email or write to Congressman Harris... One may even get an invite to show up early to meet your congressman like I did back in March at Chapel Hill Elementary School.. I'm disappointet the the Patch didn't address the pipe line that was put on hold by the President or Congressman Harris's positive report on the safety of Hydro Fracking shale gas wells... He reported that there was enough Natural Gas under North America to supply the USA for over 100 years... For those with a hearing disability, try to position yourself in the middle of the seating.. Congressman Harris projects his voice verry well, but many of the people asking questions lacked that ability yesterday..

As the commercials from the gas-production industry will tell you, natural gas is a clean energy source. I do not dispute that. However, what they won't tell you is that getting the gas out of the ground is a process that is not ready for prime time. Thanks to interference from then-VP Dick Cheney, fracking is not subject to the Clean Water Act, and lo and behold, many of the folks living in 'frackland' now have the ability to get flaming water from their kitchen sink - or die from consuming the chemicals in their drinking water.
I am all for using natural gas as a fuel (along with renewable sources) but they need to get it out without doing harm to people, farmland or the environment - and we are definitely not there yet.

Natural Gas is an option, however the process of fracking is not. The fact it's even allowed is just another indication of the corruption in our government.

Well maybe his office is telling us something - they could not put out the notice for this meeting earlier due to safety concerns, but they have already announced a Town Hall in Perry Hall for Dec. 19. So what is so dangerous in Kingsville during Thanksgiving week that will not exist in Perry Hall on Dec. 19? Will a force field be installed at the library by then? Will the Secret Service do a thorough sweep of Perry Hall in advance of the meeting? Will we have to submit to a shakedown and use a photo ID to get in?
Inquiring minds want to know...

Safe Fracking? Harris might tow the Cheney line about 100 years' worth of natural gas, but that will come at the expense of our drinking water. There are 29 different carcinogenic chemicals used in the fracking process, including benzene, toluene and xylene which get blasted into the ground, and then gets into the groundwater.
What will be the cost of THAT mess in the future?
Harris is supporting profits for oil companies to be made on the backs and the health of the rest of us.

Andy Harris is not a part of the solution, he's part of the problem. Here you have a guy that is hell bent on idiology over what is good for the Country. Cut taxes for the rich and screw everybody else. What happened to sharing the pain? Name a bill that bares his name that ever passed while he was a state senator or representative in Annapolis. He is a bomb thrower and gets nothing done. That's really working for the people, right?

What a crock! If he was interested in what people had to say, he would schedule meetings at times that are conductive to working people to show up. Does he really think that 24 hours is enough time to make arrangements for child care and to take leave from work to come to his meeting? This is why the American public feels that Congress is out of touch.

Fracking seems to be an economical way of getting resources out of the ground exclusively in terms of the monetary cost to the corporations extracting the resources, but it also seems to be done with total disregard for the people drinking the ground water in areas where Fracking is utilized. In the long run is it really economically viable if people are poisoned by their drinking water? Shouldn't we consider factoring in the looming negative economic impact to families regarding health related damaged?
