After living in Fells Point for 10 years, Carrie Flor had grown to rely on email groups, also known as listservs, for community updates.
So, after moving to Perry Hall and discovering the community didn't have one, she decided to create one herself.
This week, Flor founded the Perry Hall Families Yahoo! Group—and she's looking for new members.
She submitted the following statement to Patch:
I wanted to reach out to the local Perry Hall community to let families know that there is a new listserv being created for Perry Hall and White Marsh area families. I recently moved back to the 'burbs after 10 years in Fells Point. I am starting this list serv because there are very robust listservs for the Southeast and South Baltimore areas (SE Baltimore's group has over 1000 members) where I came from, but I have yet to find anything comparable in this area. The Baltimore City listservs were propagated with the help of a local non-profit, the Downtown Baltimore Family Alliance. I have found nothing similar for this area to help get the word out.
If you are not familiar with listservs, you are not alone. Everyone that lives in the city (and has kids) knows about the listservs, but when I talk to my county friends, they have no idea. This group is for moms, dads and families in the Perry Hall, White Marsh and surrounding areas. It is meant to be a forum where we can exchange ideas, seek advice, make recommendations, start playgroups, schedule meet-ups, buy or sell baby items and network with other families in the area for just about anything that has to do with raising children.
There are a handful of groups like this for the area, already, but I've found that their activity has waned or they have a small number of members (100 or less). Although word of mouth travels more slowly in the 'burbs, I want to make this a very active listserv for families of all kinds to have discussions and find answers to their questions. When I was a new mom, I found the resources and people on the SE Baltimore listserv to be invaluable. I could email the group a question on just about anything: breastfeeding, playgroups, where to find good indoor activities, school information, ideas and tips, sleep habits or even things such as asking for contractor recommendations or kid friendly restaurants.
The first thing people ask new moms or moms new to the area if you live in Canton or Fells Point is, "have you joined the listserv?" It has become that essential! I hope to recreate something similar here: to have many families join and find a place they can go to for all questions and concerns that a family would have in the community. The more the merrier!
