5K to Honor 25-Year Perry Hall Track Coach

The Coach Jerry Martin Memorial Cross Country Run is at McDonogh School Sunday morning in Owings Mills.

Athletes have a chance to celebrate a man who gave his life to track and field this weekend at McDonogh School in Owings Mills.

Running Maryland and Holabird Sports plan to host "Conquer The Course: The Coach Jerry Martin Memorial Cross Country Run" 9 a.m. Sunday. The 5K run covers McDonogh’s campus and cross-country course.

Martin began his track and field coaching career at Dundalk High School in 1968 before going to Perry Hall High, where coached for more than 25 years. He was celebrated as a mentor and earned 32 titles in his career. Martin passed away from a heart attack in May 2012 at age 66.

“You could tell Jerry had a profound effect on his runners,” former colleague Sol Schwartz said in a press release. “When he worked at Holabird Sports, tons of his past athletes would come into Holabird Sports just to visit him.”

Athletes can register on the day of the race or at runningmaryland.com.

This is great. Jerry Martin (and Jim McCoach) taught me a lot about coaching when I started coaching track and cross country at Dundalk High School. I feel honored to have been a coach during that time.

Would be even better if this event could have been in Perry Hall, at the track that is dedicated to Mr. Martin.

I agree. I ran cross-country for three years, from 1988 to 1990. He was a good man and an outstanding coach.
