Speed Bumps Coming to Baker, Silver Spring
Residents of two Perry Hall streets recently gave final approval to plans for speed bumps.
Two Perry Hall traffic calming measures have gained final approval from area residents, County Councilman David Marks announced on Friday.
On Baker Lane, near Gunpowder Elementary, and Silver Spring Road, east of Honeygo Boulevard, near Stable Gate Court, two speed bumps on each road are planned for construction this June, according to Marks.
While Baker Lane gained approval from Baltimore County this month, Silver Spring Road gained approval in November 2011. Both projects recently received the required signatures of at least 75 percent of nearby residents.
"As County Councilman, I will almost always support traffic calming if it passes the engineering criteria and there is neighborhood support," Marks said in a statement.
Where are the biggest traffic problem areas in Perry Hall? Tell us in the comments.

Shouldn't the speed bumps go west of Honeygo on Silver Spring? That is where all the speed traps are.

That section, like Belair Road and Honeygo Boulevard, is designed to carry a heavy volume of traffic. Engineers have told me that speed bumps would slow traffic to an unreasonable crawl and produce massive back-ups...and then there would be complaints about congestion. The eastern part of Silver Spring Road is narrower and much more of a local route.

Now can we focus some attention on a walking path or sidewalk for Chapel and Klausmier. Pedestrian safety is more of an issue on those routes.

The typical residential speedbump is only 50% effective. Speedbumps were built
on Perryvale Rd.several years ago. Neighbors have determined that 50% of drivers DON" 'T slow down.
To be really effective, speedbumps need to be built like the ones found in shopping centers......short and sharp. IMHO.

It would be better to have more traffic lights - I am sick of speed bumps - I get penalized because I obey the rules. Soon, each car will have training wheels. Better yet, why don't we all drive golf carts? Make Perry Hall a 'golf cart only' community.

Corey: This is true, for sure. However, this can be a way more cost effective solution then more speed cameras - or police presence.
I'm choosing to just think of it this way: It may irritate me a bit, but it surely will put a damper on people who seriously pseed on it. Not to mention, make residential areas safer - which is most important.

Tim - I agree - but if you have lower back problems (or any physical ailment) or young children sleeping (which may waken them) - this is not the way to go. Plus, it puts more emissions in the air which stinks (pun intended) for the community walkers.

That's really great, but what about the speedway at Honeygo Blvd and Cross Road?? We need a light or four way stop there to control and slow down traffic.

Speed cameras and bumps aren't the answer here. If we had more cops out of roads, and maybe if they wrote stricter fines we wouldn't have these issues. I was hit on honeygo amost five years ago from someone crossing center lanes. He only got fined $260. For crossing center lanes and hitting me head on. Make it even better I was on a moped. The kid has been in several more accidents too. All his fault. But they wanna fine ppl $500 for talking on a phone. Our system is a joke.

What about putting speed bumps on Seven Courts? As far as Seven Courts I don't think the spped bumps are going to help. People drive crazy, race each other, and are nasty to anyone doing the speed limit. This morning, while taking my husband to work near the mall, I was in the left lane and had to slow down as soon as I turned my turn signal on to move to the right lane safely. The driver behind me flashed his bright lights and yelled at me. My slowest speed was 30 while waiting to get in the right lane, I was doing 35 in the left lane before waiting to safely get in the right lane. A speed bump would not have helped but it would have been nice for a cop to pull the driver over and fine them.

Jeanne,
I am sorry to read about someone committing road rage against you. You are correct, people drive crazy. I work at Ft. Meade and I travel the BW Parkway everyday. I have seen people pass others on the acceleration lanes at Rt 175, using the pull off lanes for passing, tailgating, and using exit lanes as passing lanes. Every once in a while there is a State Trooper waiting to pounce, but not often because it's 5:15AM.
I know how you feel.

What Jeanne says = 100% fact.
I proactively drive on that road to irriate speeders. I'm "that guy" who will straddle the middle (going 6-8 mph over the limit) while I see people on the sidewalks.
Baddie drivers behind me can rage all they want.
Half of the time they are on their handheld phones to begin with.

I agree Jeanne, however Oak Park Dr is horrible, I've had three cars totaled there near Hickory Hurst (9800 blk). County police say not much they can do because it is no where to sit

I live off Honeygo between Joppa and Cross, and that straightaway is like Daytona.
No regard for speen limit, changing lanes, cutting everyone off, etc.. Speed or Slow bumps are the only way to slow people down. That's whats needed at schools, work zones, and everywhere that needs these speed demons, going no where, to slow down.

Same here Ed, I live off of Gunpowder Farm Road and I agree with you about the straightaway. Two years ago some guy in a pick up must have been fiddling with his cellphone and going fast on Honeygo ran off the road through a hydrant and sign on the corner of Gundpowder Farm.and Honeygo. What a mess. My wife and I hate making that left turn out of Gunpowder Farm onto Honeygo.

I am not a proponent of speed bumps, but I understand that we must all suffer together because of the many who drive too fast. Signal systems are very expensive to install and maintain. Traffic calming seems to be an odd addition to P/W Traffic Engineering, but it is effective in reducing speed in a heavy-handed manner.

I am thankful that we have a Councilman like David Marks who looks out for our safety, but I really despise speed bumps and what they portray about the community. At least we don't have them on sidewalks...

Speed bumps and slow bumps are not for highways, but smaller, more narrow roads like the eastern end of Silver Spring Rd. I use that road quite a bit and cars almost fly on those hills. More traffic lights are needed along Honeygo between Cross all the way down to Ebeneezer. At present there is only one light in between at Joppa Rd. Also, Balto. County PD needs to use some of their radar officers on Honeygo, not just heavily concentrate on Silver Spring between Perry Hall Blvd. and Belair Rd.

Why does Seven Courts even have 4 lanes? It just encourages speeding and passing on the right.
If you have ever turned on to Pot Springs Road off of Dulaney Valley Road, you will notice that Pot Springs Road is just as wide as Seven Courts, but there are no lane dividing lines. Instead, there are signs that say "Drive in a single lane".
I believe that would go a long way towards making people slow down.

Come to Ambulance Alley ! Dunfield Road 21236. I would like to order some speed bumps for our neighborhood. The oakcrest vans, police and ambulances use this road likes its #95. Where do I go to sign up ?

The 2 speed bumps (that's a joke) put in on Holiday Manor Rd. the street where Gunpowder Elementary School is located within the last 2 years have not deterred people from racing down that road. Residents cars parked on the street are still being totaled by speeders!!! Two speed bumps are obviously not enough

Speed bumps for these locations are appropriate and will work well.
On a separate note: I have noticed a serious rise in aggressive drivers in Perry Hall on all of the roads. Some people are treating 25 mph side roads like they were highways and Honeygo Blvd like it is just a high speed bypass to Belair Rd. Perry Hall has become victim of Harford County residents racing to get home through our neighborhoods.

Unfortunately there will always be people of poor character who speed on our streets, blow off stop signs and disregard rules of the roads and common good driver behavior. The poor woman who was killed by the hit and run driver is a perfect example of our locals who drink and drive, text and talk on phones do excessive speeds on 7 Courts while taking their children to the elementary school in the neighborhood. maybe there should be a character test before residents purchase a home in Perryhall and a background check to eliminate the slobs we currently have blasting through these residential areas. i have people many times pass me on Seven Courts easily driving at more than 55 mph. I am surprised though that no one has complained about the lack on sidewalks in many Perryhall neighborhoods and open drainage ditches next to these streets, Hines, Sims, Chapel Hill, maybe Mr Marks or Kathy Klausmeyer could apply pressure to the county for safer areas for all residents to walk, you residents certainly pay your taxes for this.

More cameras, but operated by the government, don't line the pockets of some private company with a majority of the fine money!
I use Seven Courts every day. It's madness that they made it four lanes. It used to be only two. As for people using the acceleration lanes to pass, that happens all the time on 695 at Harford, Cromwell Bridge and Dulaney Valley rds. Love to see some tickets, but the state police told me they are not breaking a law unless they speed while doing it.

There are a lot of problems with unsafe roads because of drivers (of all ages) who do not drive careful and feel they have the right away no matter what. I sit in shock while people don't get out of the way of ambulances & fire engines, I thought you were always to go as far right as possible to get out of their way. Many times I have seen people go through the light, honking people that are stopped just missing an emergency vehicle. Some of the problems with the two lane roads is not all the drivers. Even through people have driveways they park 2-4 cars in the road making it difficult to get by. I grew up on Timonium Road were there was room to park your cars on the road but the cars had to be in the driveway in order they were leaving and if you didn't like it you parked your car in the dead end and walked back to your house (a choice I made many of times). People do need to slow down and be more careful and please don't talk on the cell phone while driving and holding the phone up to your ear. Most of the people still driving with their phone to their ear are causing accidents & near misses. Everyone be safe.
On a side note I am thrilled they are building a dog park and it's about time.

Kilbride Court could use a few speed humps. The court has no thru access and some still drive as fast as they would on Joppa Rd.
