U.S. Route 1 Closed To Traffic Monday

An accident in the area of Wilgus Road in Fallston closed Belair Road, or U.S. Route 1 to southbound traffic around 5 p.m. Monday.

An accident on Belair Road was causing major traffic delays on the heavily traveled roadway Monday evening.

Maryland State Police closed U.S. Route 1, or Belair Road, to southbound traffic in the area of Wilgus Road Monday evening shortly before 5 p.m. after an accident blocked traffic on the road, according to a dispatcher with the Maryland State Police Bel Air Barrack.

Commuters traveling between Harford and Baltimore counties often use the roadway to get to and from work.

The dispatcher said no serious injuries had been reported in connection with the crash as of 5:15 p.m., but traffic delays were likely due to the road closure.

Check out the Patch commuter map for live traffic updates.

I was the one who called 911 first. It was the scariest thing I've witnessed. It was actually 4 cars but only two cars got the worst if it.

What kind of cars? Cause a deep red colored jeep that I followed on my way to work from Aberdeen...was weaving and bobbing all over the road and cut several cars off-went that way up 24 at the mall.

EB.. I was very shaken up so not sure exactly their makes (no jeep tho) but it was 3 cars and a truck. A light black and a white car and also a car ran into the back of a black ford truck. The white one had an older man probably in his 80's. The black car was the one who hit the white car. I drive Belair Road every day to get to work and cars are in big hurrys they zig zag every chance they get to speed pass everyone, it's sad.

It is exactly what the residents said was going to happen. Just like everything else though, I guess the residents dont know what we are talking abou! We are not the professionals and money rules everything. It doesn't really matter if it costs lives!!

I thought I was going to be one of them today! A man and a woman in a white pick up truck from PA driving in the right lane forced me into on-coming traffic to avoid a bicyclist in the right lane. They just came right on over without looking. I drive a full size conversion van, so I am not some small vehicle that cannot be seen!! I blew my horn as they started crossing the line, they didn't care, they just kept coming!!

So they should have run down the bicyclist? Perhaps as they got caught in the predicament, they were hoping you would be able to adjust a little bit, given that you were driving defensively? The same thing happened to me yesterday. Car in front of me signaled a turn to the right. What I did not anticipate is that they would come to a dead stop before they made the turn, so I too had to borrow a foot or so of the other lane to avoid a collision.

Or maybe bicyclists should stick to roads with shoulders. The ones who ride bikes on busy roads without them are just as intelligent as the people I see walking on the sides of busy roads with no shoulders at night.

I'm not saying they deserve to be injured. Stop being a dick and interpreting stuff that isn't there. I'm saying they're idiots for riding their bike on a busy road. Push comes to shove that car is going to seriously injure or kill them and quite frankly, I can't tell you how many of them straight up ignore the fact that they're sharing the road with 2 ton death machines. They are oblivious. Sorry, but they shouldn't be allowed on roads without shoulders as they're a hazard.

That's great! Just remember that you're bound by the same traffic laws as the rest of us. That means making sure you have a headlight on the front of your bike for roads where you can't see further than 1000ft clearly and not riding side by side. That also means using turn signals and obeying the speed limit. You can get a ticket for going too slow and being a hazard to traffic in a car, so why not a bicycle? It's no less of a danger. You guys want to be equal and share the road, right? Shouldn't be a problem since most bikes can get up to 30mph pretty easy and most roads with a speed limit above that have shoulders.

You're missing a few things:

Maryland's traffic laws apply to bicycles and motor scooters. (TR § 21-1202)
Speed limits fall under traffic laws, turn signals fall under traffic laws. I see no reason bikes shouldn't be any less bound to those laws than a car if they're sharing the road.

A lamp is required on the front of a bicycle or motor scooter, if the bicycle or motor scooter is used on a highway when people and vehicles are not clearly visible at 1,000 feet. (TR § 21-1207)
This would mean roads that turn at less than 1,000 feet as well. Not just at night.

This one kills me because it's SO common to see:
A person may not ride a bicycle, motor scooter, or EPAMD while wearing a headset or earplugs that cover both ears. (TR § 21-12010)

And while I'm very sorry that people have hit you, those people were careless and it could have been anyone they hit. My issue isn't with bikers on roads with bike lanes and shoulders, my issue is with bikes on curvy back roads with no shoulder or give room going very slow and not being observant. Which is far, far too often and a hazard to normal traffic and themselves. There are safe alternative places that bikes can be ridden.

My husband and I were in the traffic not long after the accident. We were on our way to take our dog to see Santa at Harford Mall!! Some people waiting to see what was going to happen with the traffic must have been in a big hurry because people were making u-turns on Bel Air Road and racing south on the road I guess to make up time. After seeing people almost hit each other I called 911 and put it on speaker. I explained what was going on with some of the people waiting on Bel Air Rd and my concern there would be another accident. Ten minutes later the police was directing traffic through a small parking lot around the accident to try to help the situation. I thyink that was great of the police.

Traffic on route 1 between mountain and record road is at an all time high. A developer , Michael Eular wants to put an RV campground of all things behind Texas Roadhouse. It could accommodate up to 150 campers/rV ers who would get in and out right where the accident was today. This plan is a special exception zoning case scheduled for feb 27 at Council chambers in Belair. It's a bad plan and on top of being ridiculous. Who wants to "camp" at Rts 1 and 152? it will heavily impact traffic as well. The intersection at Rts 1 and 152 is considered the most dangerous in Harford County now.

The description of the RV park is quite nice. I'm completely in favor of it. It won't add a significant amount of traffic to the area. The entire site would have room for no more than 110 RVs. The amount to be charged would pretty much guarantee that This would be a short stay situation. $110 site @ $50 each is $2 Million a year. This would contribute to the local tax base. I don't believe that RV parks are subsidized like empty farm land.

The park could bring in well over $1 Million a year if fully utilized and employ several people, possibly including some making more than minimum wage. This would have NO traffic impact as compared to something like the CVS of McDonalds which are already there.

This site would not be like the typical RV resort that people would stay at long term, sometimes even a week or more. This is just a stopping off point and could bring in some revenue to help reduce deficits.

A full service resort would be something like Morris Meadows (Buffalo Farm etc.) A very nice park is at Elk Neck. Neither are in Harford County.

The RV industry almost died in 2008-9. It's on the rebound now. Would be nice if all the transients didn't have to park at Wal-Mart or Crackerbarrels (many of them allow overnight parking) and could spend some money in the restaurants at Lynch's Corner instead of in other counties.

the old man has 2 broken legs and a broken foot. the woman has a broken sternum and the man a broken shoulder. road accidents are brutal even when the impact speeds are under 35 mph.

Ben I was the closest to this accident, I'm so lucky I wasn't involved. I watched you climb out of your window and the girl in the passenger seat looked hurt badly glad to hear its not as bad as I thought. I talked to the police and left my number saying what I witnessed I was heading the opposite direction but the older mans car came in my lane I had just enough time to get in the other lane. I was the one who called 911. Glad to hear not too serious injuries.
