Darlene Roland, 18, voted for the first time on Tuesday.
But instead of returning home after voting at Gunpowder Elementary, she went to Perry Hall High School to show her support for Republican presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul.
The Perry Hall senior was joined by her father, Jon Roland, a popular physics teacher at the high school.
Paul, who recently campaigned at the University of Maryland, College Park, is projected to come in fourth place behind other fellow presidential candidates in Maryland.
Sitting in the grass with their homemade signs and banner, the father, daughter pair explained why they support Paul.
Watch the video to hear their answers.
Are young people more or less involved in politics than in past elections? Tell us in the comments.

How is the young mind influenced and by what? I would bet that this young woman would disagree with her father's position as well as Ron Paul's positions within the next 20 years on most matters. I must admit, as a non-Republican voter, what a difficult choice faces Republicans.

I think a lot of people look at you and think "how is the old mind influenced, and by what?"

Ah Ryan, I do not know your age, but I am 59, which makes me old I guess in your eyes.
To answer your question, most of us "old" folks would say that our minds have been influenced by the experiences over our lifetime. The more experiences the more wisdom gained. Some may say I have none or very little wisdom, that is their right.
The young without those life experiences generally are influenced by those immediately around them, parents and other family members. That is not necessarily a bad or good thing.
Hopefully, you will live a long life and have many experiences, some will be good and some will be life lessons.

Good for her. It was good to see her out there. Ron Paul is the only politician consistent in his stances on the subjects.

Pretty good group of choices when you really stop to think about it, Paul. No matter who the GOP selects, it will be a far better choice than 4 more years of the absolute failure that defines Obama's tenure.

America's biggest enemy is debt. Ron Paul is the only candidate for a fiscally responsible government and to end our fiat currency and return to a responsible currency.

Paul A. you crack me up. You have no debt but feel it is okay for the gov to have massive debt. What's up with that? You are good with money, what is your solution? Knowing you personally, you believe that no one should get a free ride and everyone should work for a living, how can you support Obamacare? Your checkbook, values and nice homes reflect the Replubican party. Why don't you give all your cars, homes and money to the gov, continue to work and live on North Ave? Oh I forgot, rich people keep poor people down. Now I see your connection to Dems. By the way, your still looking good!!!

Now James. I do have debt, albeit much less than I used to have. Let me try to answer your questions as they come up. I am looking good, thank you ;-))
I did not say it is okay for the government to have massive debt. When Clinton left office, the budget was balanced (still had debt) and there was absolutely no need to go to war in Iraq and enact huge tax cuts. It was a stupid thing to do and we have been paying for that mistake and will continue to pay for that mistake for a very long time. Bush had a good thing handed to him and chose to reward his wealthy friends. I didn't need the tax cut, but took it like everyone else.
One can be a fiscal conservative, support business, work hard without being a greedy b**stard. I have earned what I have and the difference between me and the wealthy part of the Republican party is I know what it is like to have to roll pennies for bread, Romney doesn't.
Very rich people don't keep poor people down, very rich people just want to get richer and most of them don't really care about poor people. As I have said on other posts on the Patch, poor people and lazy people have their scams to cheat any way they can. However, so do the very rich. Their crooks come armed with money and are wearing suits. They muck up the tax code while the rest of us (yes me) pay higher rates of taxes than they do.
Fixing the budget is a serious problem, when you spend $3 for every $2 you take in, the cuts & tax increases necessary will be huge.

Referring to old minds. Republican and Democrats are the past. Young educated minds realize the two parties are working in cahoots with each other and are fooling the elder.

Republicans may have a difficult choice but Democrats really have no choice. Democrats better wake up and see where the US is headed if Obama gets back in office.

Let's see, Obama or back to how it was under Bush? Or for that matter, back to how it was for women under Andrew Jackson. All Romney wants to do is bomb Iran and give money to his billionaire friends. Great ideas.
I'll stay the course, thank you.
