Volunteer at 'The Square'
Franklin Square Hospital Center is looking for volunteers
I have volunteered with several organizations—ones that I will be sure to share with you in future articles, but there was one opportunity that, because of timing, I wasn't able to participate in and had been really looking forward to. That was the Reach Out and Read program at Franklin Square Hospital Center.
Reach Out and Read is a program where volunteers read to children in the hospital or waiting rooms of doctors' offices. The goal is to promote early literacy to help prepare children to enter school with the skills they need to succeed. When available, children are given books to take home as well. Besides reading, volunteers may also be needed to help with book drives and other events.
Franklin Square Hospital has other volunteer needs as well. Volunteers are needed to help in the Auxiliary Gift Shop, assist in ED nursing floor needs, to provide clerical assistance in hospital administrative offices, to participate in the Prayer Shawl Ministry and to mentor breast cancer survivors.
Volunteers are asked to commit to one day per week, for four hours per day for at least six months.
There are additional benefits to being a Franklin Square Hospital volunteer. Volunteers are able to attend educational programs on health-related topics, they get free parking, free beverages and are provided with a uniform (shirt or jacket), as well. There are also several events throughout the year to honor volunteers.
Who can volunteer? According to Kathy Stewart, coordinator office adminstrator of Volunteer Services, volunteers can be "high school students in the summer who have completed the 9th grade (15-years-old) to the age of 100."
In fact, there is a summer program for high school students who are interested in the healthcare field. Students must be able to give at least 40 hours of service—that is five hours a week for eight weeks. There is an application process which begins Feb. 1.
