White Marsh Volunteer Fire Kicks Off Cadet Program
The program will continue to accept new cadets, ages 12-16, on the third Thursday of each month.
More than a half-dozen children and teens joined the White Marsh Volunteer Fire Company's junior cadet program during its kick-off last week.
But don't expect them to be running into burning buildings anytime soon.
"They can't do anything hazardous," said Kevin Palmer, company president. "Mostly, we learn about team work."
With a $25 membership fee, used to pay for activities, anyone between 12 and 16 may participate in the cadet program.
"They learn CPR, first aid and the basics of fire fighting. They also participate in fairs and parades," Palmer said. "It's pretty action-packed."
William Wychulis Jr. 12, a student at Perry Hall Middle, joined the program on March 15. His father, William Wychulis Sr., volunteers at the station.
"We know they're in school all day. There's going to be some classroom time, but mostly, it's going to be hands-on activities," Wychulis Sr. said.
This is exactly what attracted Wychulis Jr. "I just think it would be fun to ride the engine," he said.
When cadets turn 16, they qualify to become company members and take a more active role in fire fighting. "The whole point is to get them interested now," Palmer said.
Cadets will meet every third Thursday of the month at the station on 5419 Ebenezer Rd. in White Marsh. Prospective participants may join the program at any time by attending a meeting or contacting officials by email at membership200@gmail.com or by phone at 410-335-5112.
