This is the first of four pet letters to Santa that will be featured on Patch this week. Check back tomorrow for more.
The holiday season is a time for generosity, and this time of year many ask me which animal welfare organization is most in need.
My top recommendation is The Baltimore Humane Society, which does not receive any government or tax funding. It is known is for its philosophy, transparency, practices and programs. Consider making a donation, volunteering your time or adopting a new pet from them. I would like to showcase some of BHS's temporary residents by presenting Miley's letters to Santa.
I am writing to you on behalf of the animals here at the Baltimore Humane Society. My friend Nixon wrote a letter to you last year and like all of the homeless pets who did so, you heard his wish and sent a family to adopt him. In Nixon’s case, however, things did not work out, and through no fault of his own, he is once again here at the shelter. I’m afraid he is losing hope. Please Santa, Nixon has been here so long and he is such a good boy who deserves a family to love him.
Nixon can not help that he was born with a big square head and muscular body. Some people are afraid of dogs like him, but really he is just a big old mush who would like nothing better than to have a family all to himself. He is very stoic and will not admit it, but I know the rejection is getting him down.
Here at BHS, we are not wishing for sugar plums, no fairies are dancing in our dreams. Instead, we are hoping to wake up on Christmas morning in our very own homes with our very own families. I’m not asking for me. I came here as a kitten in 2010, so I have grown up in the shelter and it is the only life I know. But for my friends who hope and yearn, please make my wish of a home for the holidays and every day after come true.
What are you doing for your animal friends this Christmas? Tell us in the comments.
