My Emotional End to First Year of School

I had to fight back the tears today at my oldest daughter’s end of the year (kindergarten) picnic. And I didn’t even get to stay the whole time to see what her teacher gave the class, which would have surely brought on the water works!

When did I get old enough for her to be finished with her first year of school?!

It was tough enough last week when she came home and described in great detail what went on during the fifth grade graduation. She knew more about it than the people who actually attended! She said the parents came and walked their child down the isle. Yep. Got choked up at this. Then she moved to wardrobe. What the boys wore: “they wore what Daddy wears to work. A button up shirt and a long tie.” Her greatest details involved the dresses worn by the girls. One in particular was a “white dress with skinny straps and a blue stripe going this way.” She demonstrated to me where the stripe started and ended, “and she had on matching shoes. it was really pretty.” I said it sounded like she was ready to shop for her fifth grade graduation dress (already). She just smiled ear to ear and nodded with confidence, "yes."

In two days, she will be officially done with her first year of school. I only have 12 more first and last days, 12 more back to school shopping weekends, 12 more first day of school pictures ... what’s a mother to do? As a parent, I couldn’t be prouder of her growth and achievement this year. She reads to me now and her siblings. The list of what she learned and accomplished goes on and the best thing is that she is proud of herself! She definitely enjoys sharing with us what she can do. I have an entire of summer to be lazy, have fun, and go on cool adventures with her, but I will miss my baby.

Congratulations LKD and the class of 2024!

My youngest will enter his senior year of high school in the fall. I can relate exactly. It's so exciting to see them grow up, turn into adults, accomplish things...but each milestone cuts those apron strings a little more, so despite the pride, it also brings tears of sadness mixed with joy! You sound like a great mom who will continue to enjoy each of those moments - she is very blessed to have a mom like you.

I can relate with you. I have an 11 yr old who is today graduating from 5th grade and a 6 yr old who just yesterday had her kindergarten picnic. It is hard to believe that my babies are no longer babies and starting a new milestone in their lives. I remember when they each needed me to help them button their shirts or tie their shows. I remember combing their hairs and trying to figure out what hair do will I give them today. I enjoyed watching them grow and listening to them talk to me about all the wonderful things they learned. And even though my eyes get teary at just the thought I will have a 1st grader and a middle schooler next year, I also get excited to be able to be part of all the things they will learn. It is a blessing to be part of their lives and them part of mines. You will enjoy every moment of your baby's life. Good luck with your 1st grader and may you enjoy each milestone of her life.

Wendy,
Dawn, Jody, Susie and I were all a mess...Mrs P was so choked up when she read the poem aloud to the class. Thank goodness for large sunglasses... We had such a wonderful, thoughtful class and they were such good friends to each other! I will miss seeing them, but looking forward to watching them all grow.

Update: the gift Mrs P gave to each child in my daughter's K class was a double sided picture frame with a class photo on one side and a poem on the other. My daughter has hidden it away, as it is her most cherished treasure at the moment, or I would share the poem with you now. Let's just say I had to grab the car-kleenex at the bus stop & showed up to retrieve my dog at the vet with the same very large, very dark sunglasses mdcj2003 described above! My daughter loved her class, her teacher and school so much this year! Not to mention we had a kick-butt room mom ;) Thanks everyone for sharing your milestones as well. Guess we all better head to Costco and stock up on tissues!
