Gone are the days when homework required you to do research using Encyclopedia Britannica. Today’s students grab their laptops and use the Internet to find answers for research assignments. But while many people boast they can find anything on the Internet, knowing a few reliable sources, specifically those geared toward students, is one important key to homework success. The Baltimore County Public Library website links to several other trusted homework related websites. One of these recommended sites is Brainfuse, according to Perry Hall Library Manager Darcy Cahill. “It’s an online …
While teachers went back on duty this week, Perry Hall kids were enjoying their last few days of summer break. But come Monday, Baltimore County schools will be back in session! Now is the perfect time to help your students put their best foot forward on their first day of the 2011-2012 school year. Here are some tips to help you get off to a good start: Deal with separation anxiety. While some children will run to the bus, get on and wave goodbye without any issues, others cling to parents and experience tearful goodbyes. Separation anxiety, also called Kindergarten Anxiety, is common …
It’s amazing how fast summer is flying by, and with just a few short weeks until school is back in session, now is the time to talk to your children about managing difficult situations and staying safe. The Baltimore County Police Department has issued several tips for parents and community members to help kids stay safe while traveling to and from school. It’s imperative that these lessons come from parents, as well as local police and teachers. 1. Lock your doors. The few minutes you spend walking your children to the bus stop could open your home to a burglar. A predator doesn’t always …
Could your children survive without television for a day? How about a week? For many families, the thought of not having television could be frightening. My kids ask to watch TV at least once a day and I'm fairly certain my son would watch it 24 hours a day if I’d let him. When I was growing up, we had fewer kid-targeted TV shows. I played with toys, had friends over and spent a lot of time playing outside, especially in the summer. Nowadays, kids have more than enough television programming, including several dedicated kids channels. And when that’s not enough, they can watch virtually any …
Take a break from the heat and head to your favorite store to pick up school supplies for the 2011-2012 school year. I've heard rumors that stores have limited quantities of some items, so waiting until the last minute may not be in your best interest. To put retailers to the test, I took Perry Hall Elementary School's second-grade supply list to Target, Staples and Walmart. I then priced out the "Highly Recommended" items on the list to see how major retailers priced these basic supplies. These items were all priced on Sunday, July 17, using the current in-store promotions and sale prices. I…
It's hard to believe, but it’s already time to think about going back to school. Between fall clothing, school supplies and endless choices for backpacks and lunch boxes, summer is rapidly coming to a close. Baltimore County Public Schools officials recently reminded parents not to wait until the last minute to register children for school.  If your child is attending a new school, you must register them before Aug. 12. Documentation and verification could be a time consuming process depending on your situation. Get started now to allow enough time to complete this process. Is your child …
