PHOTOS: Big American Food at Bill Bateman's

What do you think about Perry Hall's newest restaurant?

If the food at Bill Bateman's came with instructions, it would say, "Large-portioned American fare: Eat with both hands while watching sports."

The menu reminded me of happy hour pubs in downtown D.C., where young professionals flock for beers and a reliable spread of appetizers—although the atmosphere, early on a Friday evening, felt more like a local steakhouse.

See the media gallery for photos of the appetizers and entrees my group and I ordered.

What was the crowd favorite? Sweet potato fries—hot and crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside and served with a drizzly vanilla dip.

We attended the grand opening. Food was tasty, but charging "extra" for bleu cheese with an order of wings? Additionally, diners should carefully check their credit card bill if they paid by that method during the opening - we had an unauthorized extra $5 tip-charge tacked on to the total. Bateman's made it right, but that's unnerving with a new restaurant trying to make a good impression.

The wing were great and not drpwned in sauce. I was very disappointed with the sliders. The bun was almost twice the size of the slider and the meat was dry and a lot of black char burn. Even with this failed dish I will go back and try again. JP

Bateman's, when first opened in the Baltimore area was pretty good and I used to really enjoy going there. They have gone down hill very quickly. You can very seldom get exactly what you order. Either something is left out or something is added that you didn't order. When ordering a hamburger, be sure to check that it's made as described in the menu or what you asked for. My most recent experience there. the hamburger roll was stale and it was nothing close to what I had ordered from the menu. I've had a few experiences like this at Bateman's. I won't be going back.

I don't suspect we'll ever voluntarily go there, as they offer exactly nothing I can't already get nearby at an equal or better quality.

I beieve it is premature to be so critical of a restaurant that has not been opened for at least a month. Our food was good- except the hamburger was not so great.... And, the music was very loud- but, they advised there is something wrong with their sound system. We hope they get the burger and sound problem fixed and we will try it again in the future....

We had to pay 75 cents for some hot sauce too. It is really aggravating when restaurants nickle and dime the customers. We have had this happen at many restaurants in our area and it is ridiculous! And, we have had waiters at other restaurants place a tip onto the credit card bill when it is only a table for 2- then, we did not notice the charge and gave the waiter his tip in cash. We will not make that mistake again either... It is a shame, but we really need to look at every item on our check at every restaurant....

I haven't had any food at the new Bateman's yet, but I did check out the bar on a recent Saturday night. The bartenders were quick and polite, and there was a reasonable beer selection. The bar area was busy enough that I had to stand with my date when we first got there. There was a mix of age groups present, which I think is fun. I saw several employees come and go, and most seemed professional. Around 11 or 12, the crowd started to thin. I can't say whether it was because it was getting later, or because the bar got a little rowdy when the wait staff got off work. The loudest of all was a 50's-ish man buying shots for some female employees that had turned their work shirts inside out. He seemed to know all of the employees and was trying to impress the younger ladies, even following one around at one point. I hope this man isn't a manager! All in all, a decent evening with reasonably priced drinks and some free entertainment from the creepy guy.

J Zerhusen: No, you shouldn't HAVE to. The answer is simple - don't go to these places again. I don't. Perry Hall and the nearby area doesn't lack for great options for lunch/dinner. The tip thing I've never heard of before.

lol at men still living out their mid-life crises. Sure buddy, those ladies half your age are REALLY interested in you. Yep!

Bateman's has definitely gone down hill since first opening. I'm so bummed that they put a Bateman's in at this location. I was really hoping for something better like a Macaroni Grill.

Famous Dave's imo. In other news, a Red Robin is coming to the White Marsh mall at some point around the holidays. located where the old Fudd's used to be. looking forward to that, I am a sucker for their A1 Peppercorn burgers and tower of onion rings and hated trucking out to borderline Towson to get them, they'd be almost cold by the time I would get home.

Poor service, poor food quality, poor serving temperature, poor portion size, poor stock in bar (NO white wine!) / wrote letter / restaurant provided free meal the second time, however, this was only moderately better. Try the Sunshine Grill for good, reasonable priced food and they serve alcohol now.
