Q&A: Mission BBQ Co-Founder Talks Perry Hall

The restaurant held its grand opening Monday and benefits the Wounded Warriors project.

Serving up sauce-slathered smokey meats and sides, Mission BBQ opened its second location in Perry Hall on Saturday. Its grand opening celebration was held Monday afternoon.

Former Under Armour executive Bill Kraus and former Outback Steakhouse executive Steve Newton founded the first Mission BBQ in Glen Burnie on Sept. 11, 2011—the 10th anniversary of 9/11. Gaining immediate popularity, Baltimore Magazine named it the best barbecue in Baltimore.

Patch recently spoke with Newton about the restaurant's future and philosophy.

Patch: Why bring Mission BBQ to Perry Hall?

Newton: First and foremost, it's a great community. Families are solid and stable. It reminds us a lot of the community in Glen Bernie. It's a solid American neighborhood with the high school so close and a grocery store right next door.

Patch: What are your plans for opening additional locations?

Newton: We're taking it just one step at a time, and certainly entertaining all opportunities. Really, our focus is to get Perry Hall off the ground and successful, with great people and great food. If we do well here, we may take it to another area.

Patch: Describe the dining experience at Mission BBQ.

Newton: We don't think there's anything more American than backyard barbecue with the family and uniformed American heroes. The space, furniture and fixtures are comfortable with pictures of military, police, firefighters, football and lacrosse players. You can walk in and have your order ready in two minutes or you can sit in the dining room and take as long as you want. We clear your table but there's no tipping. Every hour you can sample a different menu item.

Patch: Why the patriotic theme?

Newton: Bill and I joke that we're a couple of corny patriots. We love our country, and although it's not perfect, it's the best country on the planet and we're very proud to be Americans. Our lives changed on 9/11. That's when Bill and I look back and think our country changed, in some ways for the better. We came together at that tragic time and we were reminded that the American spirit is as strong as steel. That's why we decided to open our first restaurant on the 10th anniversary. After 9/11, I started telling my son every time we passed a fire engine or a police car, "Those are the real American heroes." For Bill, it's personal. His son is in the Marines and his other son is preparing for the Naval Academy.

Patch: How is the restaurant involved with Wounded Warriors?

Newton: These young men and women go off and fight for our freedoms and sometimes they come back physically and mentally wounded. Wounded Warriors does a fantastic job helping them out. We've become partners with them and friends of their organization. On the day of our grand opening, 100 percent of the proceeds benefit the organization. A portion of sales everyday also go toward the organization.

I absolutely LOVED our visit to Mission BBQ in Perry Hall. It was the BEST BBQ in the state and I am hoping they open more around the area. I really appreciate they support our troops, firefighters, police officers, and sports teams. They are a true asset to the community in which they are found and many businesses could learn a lot from them!

Yeah, these guys are really good, really friendly. Been there a couple times. No more long treks to Famous Dave's.

My sister-in-law actually played with my nephew too Tim. Unlike EVERY OTHER single parent that wasRead More there. However, you can't tie your child to you. They came there to play. Bullies move very quick. When my nephew fell and was visibily scared, not a single parent except for one even noticed. Nobody from the library was in site. You are right that if parents were required to pay attention to their children then there would not be an opportunities for bullies because the parents of those bullies would be watching them also. When the group came from a religious school in Pikesville this is exactly what happened. All the parents stayed with their kids. All other parents, with little exception stayed in a waiting room talking amongst themselves paying little attention to their children. My nephew has been to all kinds of playgrounds and never been attacked by older kids before. Next time, if my nephew is attacked by an older child I will urge my brother to call the police and press charges against the parent. However, irreponsible Storyville need not worry -- won't be back there. Just wish our tax dollars weren't supporting this.

Let me put this in more practical terms. 1. My sister-in-law suggests that the bully seemed about 8Read More years old and probably shouldn't have been left at Storyville to begin with. There is no ID system at Storyville for childs age. 2. The bully caused various kinds of mayhem. Knocking down things, shouting, etc. No one from the library is actually in Storyville so there was no disciplinary action taken such as removing the child. 3. Parents should not view Storyville as a babysitter and not be allowed to congregate in the waiting area, leaving their children to play alone. 4. Items that could be used to cause serious injury should be removed from Storyville. 5. Cameras. If an 8 year old hits a 3 year old at Storyville where parents are suppose to be watching their children, I want proof for a court case. Yes, it's a shame it can't just be a pleasant place to take your kids but it isn't. It is filled with unrully children and uninterested parents. A child SHOULD NEVER leave a library with two bruises across his face EVER.

Sounds like your sister in law needs to grow a brain. If an 8 year old is running around like aRead More maniac, grab your child and GO FIND an employee to wage a complaint and get the kid booted. My daughter is 6 and went a couple weeks ago and was not permitted beyond the gate with the other kids in the group. Just because some ghetto monkey jumped the fence one day, don't give this place a black eye for it.
