I can still vividly remember the first time that I met Darcy Cahill, outgoing branch manager for the Baltimore County Public Library's (BCPL) location in Perry Hall. It was during January of 2009, near the end of the construction for the new Perry Hall Branch, located on Honeygo Boulevard. In my role as a member of the Board of Library Trustees, I jumped at the chance to get a sneak peak of our new library.
For what would certainly not be the last time, no sooner than I had walked in the front doors, was there to greet me. Her enthusiasm and obvious love for the library system generally—and the new in particular—were infectious. She escorted me around the branch, where construction workers were just finishing the installation of the carpet and specialty flooring within the building.
Darcy vividly described all of the wonderful, new features that would grace this . She proudly pointed out the fireplace in the reading room; the large, arched windows that allowed plenty of natural light to enter the various rooms. I was immediately struck by just how lucky that the Perry Hall community was to have the chance to get to know this special person, once the new library was officially open.
Over her nearly four years at the , Darcy Cahill has truly been a to the library. Whether it was in embracing the donation of historic images and paintings of Perry Hall for display in the library—arranged through the Perry Hall Improvement Association and Historic Perry Hall Mansion, Inc.—or in helping to coordinate the , Darcy always jumped at new opportunities.
Starting today, Darcy Cahill has moved on to her next challenge—that of serving as branch manager for . To be sure, her move is certainly bittersweet for me as well as for others. Thankfully, I am fortunate that as a library trustee and president of the Foundation for BCPL, I will most definitely have the chance to collaborate with Darcy for many years to come.
Positively, one thing that I have learned through my various roles with BCPL is that the system has a host of stellar team members. I am confident that Amanda Myers, the new manager for Perry Hall, will be as loved here as she was in her prior role as the assistant manager at the Pikesville Branch. As we raise a cheer for the many contributions that Darcy Cahill has made during her time with us, our community can look forward with confidence to a bright future with Amanda and the entire team at OUR library—BCPL's Perry Hall Branch.
