Locker Thefts, Security Concerns at White Marsh Gym

Police are investigating a series of locker thefts reported at the former Bally Total Fitness.

The White Marsh LA Fitness has been the scene of several locker thefts in the last month, according to police. The gym had been a Bally Total Fitness until December and Bally signage remains on the building.

Follow Perry Hall Patch on Facebook and Twitter.

On Jan. 11, valuables were taken from at least four lockers that had been pried open, said Lt. Ron Brooks of the White Marsh police precinct. Gym members have reported additional incidents of locker theft in recent weeks, Brooks said.

Brooks encouraged members to keep valuables in the trunks of their vehicles, rather than in gym lockers, if possible. He emphasized that vehicle theft from the gym parking lot has not been a recent issue.

In February 2011, an were reported in the gym parking lot, along Town Center Drive near , Patch . An Essex man was  with the crime in May 2011.

That incident focused attention on other , including vehicle theft, vandalism and locker theft that had become increasingly common starting in January 2011. Following several Patch reports, Bally Total Fitness management last spring.

Following a transfer in ownership, the gym became an LA Fitness in December 2011.

A gym member, who declined to be identified, told Patch that some security equipment had been removed from the gym's entrance following the change in ownership.

A gym manager, who declined to be identified, declined to answer questions about gym security when contacted by Patch.

"There has been locker theft, and that's all I'm going to say," the manager said.

LA Fitness' corporate offices did not immediately respond to a Patch request for comment.

Jackie Bowen, a Perry Hall resident and gym member, said she prefers not to use a locker at all while working out.

"I keep all my stuff with me in a bag," Bowen said. "You have to be cautious. [Theft isn't] just here—it's everywhere."

Are you concerned about security at the gym? What could be done to improve it? Tell us in the comments.

I have heard of this complaint before here. As you cannot have security cameras in the locker rooms due to privacy concerns, perhaps the club can put the cameras at the entrance to the locker rooms. This is more than a one person operation as they probably must have a lookout while they ransack lockers.

I believe that I was the first victim. I filed a police report on 18 DEC 2011, complaint #113520855, officer Gonzalez, badge 5324. They tried to steal my car but failed because I had a "low tech" key. Someone else was yelling in the locker room on 5 Jan 2012 that someone broke into his locker. There is no security. Anyone can walk in. They don't check membership cards and there are no turnstiles. I also finally got them to admit that none of their security cameras, inside and outside, worked. I park my car in "The Avenue" now and wear my keys on a lanyard. I bought an extremely thick lock for my locker. I also wonder if it's an inside job, since many workers are new, they have access to bolt cutters, and may have sabotaged the security systems (this is just speculation). It is still more likely that criminals are exploiting the absence of security. The workers don't seem to care about the problem.

This is nuts. I've been a member for over 10 years and I've never been impressed with their security. Have you ever walked across their parking lot at night? Barely lit! There must be something they can do to make a serious stance against theft. I would like them to publicly communicate what they expect to do about these problems. Sure, we can all keep our valuables in the trunks of our cars but doesn't any responsibility rest on them?

Perry Hall YMCA imo.

This has been going on a long, long, time at this gym . I was hit there about a year ago along with 3 others. The thief did the same to all of us , cut locks, took pants hanging which in my case had keys, wallet, cell phone .The odd thing was that after the police report I was able to track my cell calls from boost mobile of who was being called on phone and the numbers and dates and time , so i knew someone was using. Call in to police that took report to let him know , but the interest wasn`t there . So long story short , get a Masterlock with key that is thick and heavy , to open those you need a big pair of lopper (cutters ),do not take in wallets or valubles , keep also car keys with you in gym , secure in pockets so they do not fall out .,last make sure you place an extra lock key on outsise of your car in case you accidently lock your locker with keys in them . Believe me , it works ! If they break into my locker from now on I care , but don`t care. This can happen at all gyms , but yes this is more likely an individual thats has been doing this for a long time .Your as safe as you want to be !!!

Ok, As a former Police Officer/Detective from a juridiction the boarders Batimore County, Baltimore County resident and a Bally's/LA Fitness memeber I feel I can comment...Yes Bally's has a responsibilty to act (Cameras, notices whatever) but what is most shocking is the lukewarm response by BCPD. Anybody who watches the show COPS or reads Police procedural novels could have implimented a plan to stop these thefts after the third incident (Bait car with valubles semi-visible, surveillance van, and chase car.). But the cold hard truth is that BCPD Officers have become what we call (Please forgive the use of the word Nazi, in the following. I am in no way making light of the plight of the jewish people during WWII) Traffic Nazi's. Except for responding to calls for service, they spend the rest of their shifts sitting and looking for traffic violators. Don't get me wrong, traffic is part of the job but ask any of these officers what bs line they gave when going throgh the oral board section of the application process and I'm sure it would have come out something like this...Board Member: Mr or Ms Smith why do you want to become a Police Officer? Applicant: I would like to protect the lives and property of the citizens of Baltimore County Sir/Ma'am. Not...I wish to issue lots of Traffic Citations Sir/Ma'am. Get with it BCPD. Terry Sheridan (Former Chief and State Police Member) is gone! Start agressively patrolling and lock up some real criminals for goodness sake!!!!

I don't understand how someone is using something to pry open lockers or cut locks and no one is seeing this happen. This is ridiculous and LA Fitness needs to do more to respond. "A gym manager, who declined to be identified, declined to answer questions about gym security when contacted by Patch. "There has been locker theft, and that's all I'm going to say," the manager said." They should be ashamed of themselves if that's all they're going to say. Terrible management. Atleast be responsive or reactive.

Apparently, the management of LA Fitness couldn't care less for its members. There is one way to combat this problem. Find another gym. Don't give your money to a business that isn't interested in your safety. I am sure there are other fitness gyms that would be glad to have you as a member and provide better security.

A study was once done determining that a person tells about 26 people about an unhappy meal or service they encounter. That statistic was measured well before the internet came about. Probably has changed a little bit now.

Totally agree with your comments. There are traffic police hiding in every crevice in the Nottingham/Perry Hall area, ticketing people left and right, but there's no officers patrolling areas where there have been documented thefts, robberies, and above all, an attempted murder in the LA Fitness (then Bally's) Parking Lot. What's up with that? Moreover, LA Fitness is making this easier since they do not check members' identification at the gym entrance. They've even taken down the electronic card swipe. When the gym was Bally's, checking member ID was strickly enforced. I'm also suspicious to think these thefts are inside jobs since no one has witnessed any sawing of locks.
Tim January 23, 2012 at 07:32 PM
Thats because when they aren't there, people are getting killed. Note the hit and run just like night on Seven Courts Speedway
Sassy January 23, 2012 at 09:13 PM
There are many traffic police everywhere lately in the Perry Hall/Nottingham area. How unfortunate that there were none to witness the hit and run of the 68 year old woman? Hopefully, someone witnessed something so this criminal can be caught.

Yep, happened to me last week. Cut my lock, took my car clicker, and cleaned out my car and racked up credit cards in 26 minutes flat. The cops barely cared, and LA Fitness said there is nothing they can do..they where so cold about it. Very violating....
Sassy April 03, 2012 at 05:20 PM
It makes me very suspicious that LA Fitness personnel is reported to be cold and non-caring about the criminal activity. Just a speculation, but my perspective of their behavior supports guilt on their part. And, what's up with the cops who don't give a hoot? Theft is a crime that should be taken seriously. If LA Fitness wants to thrive after having taken over Bally's, it seems to me they should be a little more motivated to treat a victim of crime within their facility with a little compassion and LA Fitness could, at least, begin to work on some safetly precautions for their members.

they cannot protect /moniter the park lot my son car window was smashed and they stole his personal belongings

All the comments are justified. Bally's ran that place into the ground & LA Fitness hasn't fixed it up one bit. In fact, it's worse. Totally agree about the "criminals are exploiting the absence of security" comment from Ken. LA Fitness just bought out Bally's bankrupted business, and that's all. They clearly don't care to put anything into it. But you'd think they'd at least care about their own name. The pool area is filthy, full of mold, the stairway from the lockrooms to the pool are funky as hell. Don't touch the banister, you'll get a handful of GOO. I quit there & joined the Y. MUCH BETTER PLACE.

Robbed again White Marsh La Finess 12/5/2012 - Locker Theft seems to be organized as many unfamiliar faces showed up at the GYM on this day. What was odd was that the Manager who is never, ever there after 5:00 was Prowling around the Gym. Police say that eveyone signs into the Gym only to check Membership to Steal, no electronic records are keep. I use a Hefty Master Lock, one only Large Bolt Cutters could handle, yet no one saw a thing and this was busy time 5:00-6:00pm. Active Survalance Monitor at front desk does not even record, the Police tell me. I have had a Membership there for 6 years but would never ever go back again. It's dirty, it's poorly run, they should have the Locker rooms only for changing and have a storage area on the gym floor in complete view of Members at all times. I was very sad to be an American on this day. It ruined my Holiday Season, now I will just work x-mas instead of being with Family and Friends.I will pray daily that God will show some Mercey on the Souls of the Commandment Violators. Vengence is his the prayers will be mine. Cost me 5,000 grand as I had to close out a Trading account because the information was in my wallet. Baltimore is a very Dangerous Place to live, I am afraid to leave my house now.........

my car got broken into between 7-8:15 pm on may 23rd. la fitness handeled this very poorly. they claim they have no cameras in parking lot , even after there was a shooting a year or so ago. I always put my purse in my trunk to deter theft and whoever broke into my car saw me do this. they were nice enough to only take credit cards (of which they immediately used $130 for gas at the middle river royal farms), $300 in gift cards, prescription sunglasses (idiots should have tried them on first), ipod, drivers license and messed up my driver side door. Please be careful people and be wary of your surroundings. this is still a great community with a few bad apples in it.

It's unfortunate for those who feel (or do) have little choice but to go to that cesspool of a gym.
