The White Marsh LA Fitness has been the scene of several locker thefts in the last month, according to police. The gym had been a Bally Total Fitness until December and Bally signage remains on the building.
On Jan. 11, valuables were taken from at least four lockers that had been pried open, said Lt. Ron Brooks of the White Marsh police precinct. Gym members have reported additional incidents of locker theft in recent weeks, Brooks said.
Brooks encouraged members to keep valuables in the trunks of their vehicles, rather than in gym lockers, if possible. He emphasized that vehicle theft from the gym parking lot has not been a recent issue.
In February 2011, an were reported in the gym parking lot, along Town Center Drive near , Patch . An Essex man was with the crime in May 2011.
That incident focused attention on other , including vehicle theft, vandalism and locker theft that had become increasingly common starting in January 2011. Following several Patch reports, Bally Total Fitness management last spring.
A gym member, who declined to be identified, told Patch that some security equipment had been removed from the gym's entrance following the change in ownership.
A gym manager, who declined to be identified, declined to answer questions about gym security when contacted by Patch.
"There has been locker theft, and that's all I'm going to say," the manager said.
LA Fitness' corporate offices did not immediately respond to a Patch request for comment.
Jackie Bowen, a Perry Hall resident and gym member, said she prefers not to use a locker at all while working out.
"I keep all my stuff with me in a bag," Bowen said. "You have to be cautious. [Theft isn't] just here—it's everywhere."
