UPDATE: Kingsville Man Shoots Self, Dies After Police Encounter

A reportedly suicidal man shot himself after a confrontation with police early Sunday in Kingsville, police said.

UPDATE (Aug. 13, 11:27 a.m.)—A Kingsville man died on Sunday afternoon after shooting himself, according to Baltimore County police.

Cpl. Cathy Batton said police responded to a report of a suicidal man in the 12200 block of Kingswood Lane around 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 12 and searched the area with the help of a K-9 unit.

At about 2:11 a.m., police found an armed man who pointed his handgun toward police. An officer then fired at the man but did not hit him. The man then shot himself, Batton said.

The unidentified 35-year-old man was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and died at about 12:30 p.m., Batton said.

This headline is a little confusing to me. In BOLD...it reads "Man Shoots Himself After Encounter With Police", then directly below in much smaller print, it reads "suicidal man shot himself after confrontation with police". My question is.......If the man was SUICIDAL, then WHY did the POLICE take a SHOT at him? Did they receive a call to HELP this man? Oh wait, I know the answer to that, the Officers searched, found the man, saw a weapon (which would be expected of someone suicidal) and just had to fire at him to protect themselves. Sorry, but I just don't get the point of why they even bothered to respond to HELP a distraught person with their weapons drawn and to be ready to aim, shoot, and fire. Please...Please tell me that there is more to this story such as, the Police had a Mental Health Professional with them to talk to this man before they took aim?

A police officer who hesitates to use his weapon when a gun is pointed at him just might get his name on the law officers' memorial in Washington DC. Of course, you have to be killed in the line of duty to get your name on there. I do not know any more details than you do, but I do know that pointing a gun at a police officer (and I don't know if this guy did that) is a bad decision.

I want to preface by saying my comments ARE NOT DIRECTED AT THIS INCIDENT BECAUSE WE DONT KNOW THE FACTS!!!! Wow..really Kim??? May I ask what experience you have with armed emotionally unstable people???? I do have a lil training in the area. A sane person with a weapon is hard enough to deal with. Now take a person who has decided that maybe they want to take their own life and they are holding a weapon. Do you think that maybe this person who has decided that they no longer want to live could care less about killing someone else??? Bullets hurt the same regardless of who is firing the gun. When an officer is encountered with someone with a weapon they don't have the time to sit and chat about the person's intentions or psychological stability. A weapon is a weapon in the eyes of a law enforcement officer. Whether it is an 90yr old lady pointing a gun or a 21 yr old kid, you get the same result.

Suicide by police happens all the time. He probably pointed his weapon in hopes the police would do it for him.

you'd think there'd be a better way Kim, Im sure they did try to wait him out but he was " a loose cannon" he could've killed some one take it easy Kim, this man might make it, and get the help he needs......... in New York they call it "suicide by cop" you point a gun at a cop and its all over
DK August 13, 2012 at 05:41 PM
According to this artical the man did not make it.

Cop or not, let anyone point a gun at me, family or an inocent person and i can assue you he wont walk out alive. I can't believe anyone with any sense would make a comment like Kim did. Kim you need to put on that uniform these brave men and women do every day. Take a walk through the woods at night not looking for an unarmed person and see what reality is. I can say this because I did it before. The only thing this officer did by not killing him was that he saved the tax payer alot of money in overtime. Investigations take along time and alot of money. Yes, maybe he needs to go back to the range so he won't miss next time (god forbid there is a next time). This officer was able to go home to his family this time but he will never forget this moment in his lifetime. No one wants to shoot anyone or for that matter pull his/her weapon, but it is a tool that is given to use if needed. Kudo's to the police.

To Kim, Yes, all police cars ride with not only a social worker, but a Psychiatrist as well. Are you kidding me?!?!? You watch too many cop shows. I don't care if we have the complete story or not. The police don't shoot people for sport. Really!?!?
Bill Howard August 15, 2012 at 12:16 AM
Good idea Kim. Lay off the cops and get "Shrinks on Patrol" instead. Really? Actually what needs to be addressed is making the public more aware of psychological deteriation before people like this shoout themselves or others. It needs to be more common knowledge.

Did they ever release any more information, or a name on this? Anyone?
Dominic Sanchez August 19, 2012 at 11:09 AM
It looks like everyone else is as puzzled as I am...Kim, you have not a clue, REALLY. If most of us could really say what we wanted about your comment, we would (it would not be nice). I dare anyone to put yourself in an EMT, LEO, Mental Health Counselor's shoes, and you be amazed how scary these issues really are. The mind when distorted, is a very scary situation for anyone...I think Kim maybe suffering from some mental health issues ALSO! What a __________!! (insert insult here)

It should be noted that whilst ordering papers for sale at paper writing service, you can get unkind attitude. In case you feel that the bureau is trying to cheat you, don't buy term paper from it. http://www.dinneratcruise.com
