Official: Booms Around Perry Hall Caused By Aberdeen Proving Ground

An official said it was unusual for the sounds to carry all the way to Perry Hall.

UPDATE (9 a.m., Nov. 20)—An Aberdeen Proving Ground official confirmed that a series of boom sounds heard in the Perry Hall area on Monday were caused by testing at the facility.

Lynn Witkowski, a public affairs specialist, called the testing "normal," but said it was unusual for it to carry all the way to Perry Hall.

No further information on the type of testing was available as of Tuesday morning.

UPDATE (4:30 p.m., Nov. 19)—A loud boom sound shook my house in the north part of Perry Hall late Monday morning. Did you feel it, too? Rumbling sounds seemed to continue into the afternoon.

Baltimore County police and fire officials said nothing related to the sounds had been reported around Perry Hall.

It may have been construction, but it may have also been related to Aberdeen Proving Ground testing.

A media representative for APG was not immediately available for comment. However, the following noise advisory was released last week:

The U.S. Army Aberdeen Test Center, U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command, located here plans to conduct several large detonations beginning on or about Nov. 14 and ending on or about Nov. 21. These detonations are likely to generate sound and/or vibration outside the installation boundary. If weather conditions are not favorable in minimizing noise off the installation, firing will be rescheduled.

The U.S. Army Aberdeen Test Center, a test center under the U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command, provides test and test support servicesfor authorized customers, within the Department of Defense and outside theDoD, including government and non-government organizations, both foreignand domestic. ATEC plans, conducts, and integrates developmental testing, independent operational testing, independent evaluations, assessments, andexperiments to provide essential information to decision makers.

Tell us if you noticed the booming sound near your house, and share your theories about the cause in the comments.

I live in Oliver Beach, Bay Country. I feel booms almost everyday Monday - Friday during the daytime hours. I have a licensed daycare and work from home. Have been home for 4 years and constantly feel the booms. My dog is even scared sometimes. Pictures have been shook off the walls. My windows rattle..

I heard some loud booms in the late morning...so loud that I got up to look at the window to see if there was a construction type truck outside, but didn't see anything. Glad I wasn't the only one hearing things this morning,

Yes heard the booms around 10:30 am and on. Pretty loud and my dog starting barking. I had read that Aberdeen were going to detonate some explosives.

Heard them loud and clear in Perry Hall. It's not a new thing though. I've been hearing the explosions on and off for years. They drive my dog crazy.

I hear them all the time where I work, near the mall, but this week has been especially bad. I wonder if that's what is wrong with my dog. She has been acting so weird I was getting ready to call the vet. I thought she was sick, but she is terrified of loud noises.

They have been "booming" for a week. I guess the military is getting ready for something overseas.

We live between Philadelphia Road and Route 40 in White Marsh. Explosions have been louder than normal and stronger than most felt last year around this time. We have a large house, and usually everything shakes. I hope the testing never sets off an earthquake if that is even possible.

Am I the only one hearing this ?
Mike Glasser December 9, 2012 at 12:54 am
We hear it in Timonium also on Saturday Dec 8. Wow!
Bonnie Dalzell December 9, 2012 at 12:57 am
We heard them tonight in Hydes, MD 7:50 PM or so . Strange but they sound to us like the are coming from the west, not from Aberdeen. Some sort of strange echo if they are actually coming from Aberdeen?
Have heard them the previous tow nights - around the same time. Quite loud.

This place is awesome. Used it a lot when my kid was 2-3. If I had another, I'd not hesitate to takeRead More him here. Then again, I watched my kid like a hawk - and you know, actually played WITH him - while we were there. As a result, my kid never came close to being injured by another unruly kid. Just saying.
Gregg Roberts April 25, 2013 at 06:55 am
My sister-in-law actually played with my nephew too Tim. Unlike EVERY OTHER single parent that wasRead More there. However, you can't tie your child to you. They came there to play. Bullies move very quick. When my nephew fell and was visibily scared, not a single parent except for one even noticed. Nobody from the library was in site. You are right that if parents were required to pay attention to their children then there would not be an opportunities for bullies because the parents of those bullies would be watching them also. When the group came from a religious school in Pikesville this is exactly what happened. All the parents stayed with their kids. All other parents, with little exception stayed in a waiting room talking amongst themselves paying little attention to their children. My nephew has been to all kinds of playgrounds and never been attacked by older kids before. Next time, if my nephew is attacked by an older child I will urge my brother to call the police and press charges against the parent. However, irreponsible Storyville need not worry -- won't be back there. Just wish our tax dollars weren't supporting this.
Gregg Roberts April 25, 2013 at 07:09 am
Let me put this in more practical terms. 1. My sister-in-law suggests that the bully seemed about 8Read More years old and probably shouldn't have been left at Storyville to begin with. There is no ID system at Storyville for childs age. 2. The bully caused various kinds of mayhem. Knocking down things, shouting, etc. No one from the library is actually in Storyville so there was no disciplinary action taken such as removing the child. 3. Parents should not view Storyville as a babysitter and not be allowed to congregate in the waiting area, leaving their children to play alone. 4. Items that could be used to cause serious injury should be removed from Storyville. 5. Cameras. If an 8 year old hits a 3 year old at Storyville where parents are suppose to be watching their children, I want proof for a court case. Yes, it's a shame it can't just be a pleasant place to take your kids but it isn't. It is filled with unrully children and uninterested parents. A child SHOULD NEVER leave a library with two bruises across his face EVER.
