The Baltimore Blast has announced a new program to benefit 17-year-old Daniel Borowy, who was shot and injured last month inside Perry Hall High School.
Between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Oct. 13, the professional soccer team has planned a "Goals for Daniel" soccer marathon at Honeygo Run Regional Park in Perry Hall. Community members, Blast players and area students will participate in small-sided 6 vs. 6 games. Teams will be divided into travel, rec and just-for-fun levels. Entry is $20 per person and all proceeds will be donated to Daniel Borowy's family to help cover his medical expenses from three surgeries, according to a statement from the Blast.
Entry forms are available on the website or by calling Mike Conway, Blast assistant general manager and president of the Perry Hall White Marsh Soccer Association, at 410-558-4292.
The Blast is also dedicating its opening night to Borowy on Nov. 3 at 1st Mariner Arena. Baltimore County students are invited to attend and a portion of ticket sales will benefit the family.
Following multiple surgeries, Borowy has returned home to continue his recovery. According to the Blast statement, Borowy, a special needs student, has a passion for sports. He has been an active participant in the Allied Sports Program through Perry Hall High School, Harford County's Discovery League for individuals with disabilities, the Parkville Recreation Conquerors Program and Kingsville Recreation.
Carissa Smith, a family friend, approached the Blast about the fundraising program.
"Thanks to his athletic interests, he is strong enough to get through this. If you have ever met him you know that he would never hurt anyone. He didn't deserve this at all. I hope to see him a month from now, singing in the car, turning the music up too loud, and doing everything he can do to make me laugh," Smith stated in the announcement.
Kevin Healey, Blast president and general manager, added his support.
"The Blast is happy to be able to help Daniel and his family," he stated. "We always are looking for ways to make a positive impact on our community. This event will be a fun way to help Daniel and raise money for his medical bills. We encourage everyone to participate."
Several local fundraisers benefiting the Borowy family have ranged from a boating party in Essex to a night of entertainment at Gunpowder Lodge in Kingsville. Money can also be donated directly to the family at any time on the website of Perry Hall Family Worship Center.
