Superintendent Dance's Transition Team Presenting Recommendations

Dance will also share a report on his first 100 days as superintendent.

Superintendent S. Dallas Dance's transition team, which was assembled to review past school system reports and meet with stakeholders groups, will present its recommendations at a Tuesday night Board of Education meeting.

"As I assumed the superintendency, it was important to me to have a comprehensive and strategic process of studying the school system and listening to the voices of students, parents, staff, and other stakeholders," Dance said in a news release. "My transition team worked tirelessly to gather information and formulate invaluable recommendations. We will combine their ideas with what we are learning through my ongoing 'listening tour' of schools and communities to develop our upcoming strategic plan, Blueprint 2.0."

The recommendations will be short and long term initiatives addressing 10 areas: organization; communication; teaching and learning; program evaluation and effectiveness; recruiting, retaining, growing, and developing excellent employees; equity; budget development; technology; strategic planning; and creating healthy, safe, and orderly environments, the release reads.

The transition team, which consists of 21 members, is led by former state superintendents Nancy Grasmick and Bill Bosher, according to the release. School system staff, education experts and stakeholders also comprise the team.

Additionally, Dance will present a report reflecting on his first 100 days in office. The superintendent started his post with the school system on July 1.

Both reports will be available on the Baltimore County Public Schools website on Wednesday.

Teacherwife, A toxic environment is the legacy Joe Harriston leaves with BCPS. A new superintendent is a start to changing this condition but more importantly is the need to change the makeup of the school board to a group that will not allow the well to be poisoned in the first place. That will occur when the school board is responsive to the citizens of Baltimore Co. and therefore required to be engaged with their constituents. An elected school board is the other component necessary to complete changing the atmosphere in our schools. The next session of the Maryland General Assembly is right around the corner and now is the time to remind those in Annapolis that a new superintendent is just a start not the conclusion of this needed change.

There was a forum open to the community a week or two ago at Perry Hall High School. We had our chance to speak up then.

A 21 member transition team? For a county school superintendent? How many people were on the governor's transition team? Your tax dollars at work!

The bottom line is that we are once again simply chasing the next test. So now, once again there will be an emphasis on writing across the curriculum as it was in the late 80's and 90's back in the MSPAP days. We really aren't doing anything innovative in schools. Kids are bored out of their mind and are neither college or career ready despite the rhetoric. Achievement gaps persist and big dollars are wasted - see the latest from BCPSS. Until we are ready to put in place some innovative steps and dismiss the status quo, we will continue to get the same product: good kids from educated families doing well and poor kids from crappy families that are struggling.

Was there - lots of lip service and good pr. Very little substance.
