'The Wiz' Hits Perry Hall High March 1-4

The modern rendition of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" includes a cast of more than 130.

In describing 's spring musical, Martha Bingaman uses the word "humongous."

"The Wiz," playing March 1-4, includes a cast of more than 130, according to Bingaman, an English teacher and producer of the play. Music teacher John Pusateri is directing.

"It's the best show. It's fabulous. It's for all ages," Bingsman said. "It's a very modern rendition with a lot of interesting twists to it."

The soulful musical, an adaption of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," was first produced in Baltimore in 1974.

Bingaman emphasized that the musical brings together several different groups. Student athletes were brought in to play flying monkeys, members of the step squad and break dancing club plan to dance on stage and the school principal and assistant principals are expected to make cameo appearances.

County Ballet in Bel Air is also contributing several child dancers to the performance.

And Toto comes too. Expect to see a real dog scampering around at some point during the play.

Community members are encouraged to attend. Performances run at 7 p.m. in the school's auditorium on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets will be available at the door at $10 for adults and $7 for students.

Bingaman thanked the several local businesses that purchased advertising in the programs.

"Our community supported us like we have never been supported before," she said.

A full program and cast list is available under the photo gallery.

My daughter is one of the 3 student directors so I've gotten the inside scoop. She said the siingers are amazing and it's full of humor and physical comedy. I can't wait to see it!

I would like to take my 5 year old daughter to this show. Wow, have times changed. It's going to cost me almost $20 to see a show at a local high school. I must be getting old!

@ALD it may seem expensive, but times have changed and at least the money is supporting a good cause.

Wow, has the students and staff out done any other production I have seen at Perry Hall High and I have seen many. The Wiz is just wonderful and the cast truly left me speechless. How proud they should be of such a great production and performances. The tin man was fabulous and the Lion kept me laughing. Last show held today Sunday March 4th at 2:00 pm. Adults $10.00 & Children $7.00 and it is well worth the money not only to support the theater department but this is better than any movie I have seen lately that I paid $11.00 + dollars. WAY TO GO PERRY HALL HIGH ANOTHER GREAT JOB!

Excellent production! I went last night and the place was packed. So exciting. The cast was terrific, those kids can sing! They've incorporated the step club dancers, break dancers and hip hop club into the performance and they were terrific. There were a few children in front of me and they were mezmorized......

Awesome job, Perry Hall High School! This is an incredibly talented group of students who perform in this musical! Each night is magical. The leads are fantastic... Dorothy, the scarecrow, the tinman, the lion, and, of course, THE WIZ!! The entire group of performers are amazing. This is a must-see event! Kudos to the technical crew, the artists, the costume designers, the choreographer, the pit orchestra and the outstanding directors! Everyone who had anything to do with this musical should be very proud!
