Parents: Enjoy the End of Summer

School officially begins on Aug. 27, but there's still plenty of time to enjoy what’s left of summer.

Enough with —it’s time to let the kids be kids before routines become reality and the phrase, "It’s a school night," is forever coming out of the mouths of Perry Hall Parents.

Now is the time to make the most of the end of summer, and enjoy the last few days of warm weather and daily agendas free of .

Last weekend, my son reminded me of a promise we had made back in April. His T-ball team was the Orioles, so we promised to take him to Camden Yards for his first O’s game. Recently, we were driving down Interstate 95, and I pointed out the stadiums, and he reminded me we never went. I told my husband and searched for tickets. I was able to score great seats through my high school, and as luck turned out, we even had a babysitter for his little brother.

While we walked through the gates of Camden Yards, he was giddy with excitement. Especially when he was given a huge souvenir just for walking through the gates—it was Eddie Murray night. As we pointed out the bronzed "home run" baseballs to him on Eutaw Street, and peaked into the standing room only section to catch a glimpse of the field, the rain came, followed by more than three hours of rain delays. Yet, he sat patiently waiting for the game to begin. I was so proud of him. It’s not easy being a 5-year-old, patient and wet. We only made it through three innings, but he loved it, nonetheless.

Before school starts on Aug. 27, I plan to keep doing some of our favorite summer activities. Our school supplies and essentials have been purchased, and we are ready to go. And I even have a few days off from work! We’ll be hitting the as often as we can, fishing and crabbing at my Dad’s, and forgetting about bedtimes, routines and being punctual. I resolve that the next two weeks will be fun-filled!

What will you do with your children before the school routines begin? Will you take a , head off to the beach, zoo or an amusement park? Or, do you still have errands and shopping lists to fulfill?

For me, it feels as though the summer has flown by. We've experienced the fun of our big vacation, the unexpected twist of my emergency surgery, the excitement of the Olympic Games and the anticipation of Kindergarten.

The ups and downs of summer have been great. I love the unstructured time, and hope that we can enjoy what is left of the 2012 summer.

Have you finished your back to school shopping? What fun activity do your kids want to do before school begins? Tell us in the comments.
