A 7-year-old White Marsh baseball player completed a rare play last week.
OUTSIDE BALTIMORE, MD -- If only Little League had instant replay. Cristian Banks, a 7-year-old Fullerton Elementary student, completed a rare unassisted triple play on May 3. Coach Marty Neff, who has been involved with the White Marsh Recreation Council for the past 10 years, said it was the first time he's seen it done by one of his players. It's unusual outside of Little League, as well. According to MLB.com, only 15 unassisted triple plays have been recorded in Major League Baseball history. Share your favorite moments in kids' sports in the comments. Neff described the play, which lasted only seconds: "With the bases loaded and Cristian playing third base, the batter hit a line drive that Cristian moved to his right to catch for the …

Generations of roller skaters gathered for a program on Saturday at Honeygo Run Regional Park.
Since 1982, thousands of roller skaters have glided through the White Marsh Recreation Council. The program held its 30th spring recital at Honeygo Run Regional Park on April 29. "It's touched generations," said volunteer chairperson Angel Breedan. "It brings young people, families and communities together in a lost sport." During the 2012 season, about 160 children and 20 adults participated, said Breedan, who has been involved in the program for the past six years. Backstage, 10-year-olds dressed as roller skating pirates explained why they choose to skate. Skating makes Tommy Emich feel "faster and agile," he said. "It gives you a little more balance." Sarah Frager said she enjoys wearing the costumes during recitals. "It makes me feel …

The sixth annual conference for high school athletes will be held on Tuesday in Timonium.
Mike Gimbel has been there. He is the former drug czar for Baltimore County, a recovering drug addict and marathon runner. Now Gimble, as director of St. Joseph Medical Center’s Powered by Me!, wants to help young athletes understand the dangers of drugs, coupled with the pressure of performing both at work and in sports. Powered by Me! is a St. Joseph initiative, which educates high school and college students on the dangers of associated with being a young athlete. The program started out as a means to curb steroid use among athletes. However, six years later, the focus has widened. "We’ve expanded the message over the years to alcohol abuse, domestic violence, to concussions, injury prevention and gambling," Gimbel said. "All aspects of…

Take a closer look at life in Perry Hall.
Christopher Dolon proves you don't need a finely manicured golf course to work on your swing. Dolon, a youth pastor at Hunt Valley Church and a graduate of Perry Hall Christian School, recently brought his club out to the Gunpowder Falls State Park. The outing was part of a mentoring program he is involved in—and he was sure not to leave any golf balls in or around the river, Dolon said. What's your favorite thing to do down by the river? Tell us in the comments. Share your photos by adding them to the photo gallery or submit them by email to editor Emily Kimball, along with a description, at emilyk@patch.com.

Lacrosse players plan to honor Perry Hall field hockey player Breanna Sudano during a special "Red Out" game on Friday.
Breanna Sudano returned to the grounds of Catonsville High School for the first time last Thursday. Her last visit to the fields, on Sept. 27, 2011, nearly proved fatal. The Perry Hall High School freshman, then 13 years old, had just scored the winning goal during a junior varsity field hockey game—when she suddenly went into cardiac arrest. For several minutes until paramedics arrived, Catonsville junior varsity coach Christine Ehrlichman and Perry Hall varsity coach Chastin Faith, as well as three parents attending the game, performed CPR on Breanna. She was revived by paramedics, transported to the hospital and weeks later received heart surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center. "The credit definitely lies with the coaches…

The World Harmony Run cut through Perry Hall on its way to Baltimore on Wednesday.
There's really nothing unusual about a person running along Belair Road in Perry Hall—unless they're carrying a lit torch. Tracy Dietrich, a professional photographer, was driving with her kids when they spotted a man running southward, pushing hard through the drizzling rain and carrying a burning torch. Dietrich's daughter took a few seconds of cell phone video and they did some investigating. "It turns out it was a something really cool," she told Patch Wednesday evening. Dietrich said she's fairly certain the runner was participating in the World Harmony Run, which cut through Perry Hall on its way from Wilmington to Baltimore on Wednesday. According to its official website: The 2012 World Harmony Run is a global relay founded by peace…

A rule was adjusted in December 2011, following a complaint from a Perry Hall football coach about field closures following Hurricane Irene.
UPDATE (11:15 a.m.)—If inclement weather closes school fields to recreation organizations, Baltimore County Public Schools will coordinate with the county to close park fields as well, according to Superintendent Joe Hairston. "Therefore, there is consistency, between the school system and the Department of Recreation and Parks," Hairston stated in a letter to the County Council, dated March 30. The letter was in response to a request from County Councilman David Marks, on behalf of the County Council, for the adjustment of Rule 6303, which allows for the automatic closure of school fields whenever schools are closed countywide due to inclement weather. The County Council sent a request on March 20 for more flexibility to the rule, and to…

The Orioles open 2012 with their third public address announcer since 1974.
Ryan Wagner watched the first round of the Masters from his computer Thursday afternoon, briefly interjecting cheers for Tiger Woods during a phone call. "Come on, Tiger!," Wagner yelled occasionally. In many ways, his actions on the eve of his first day at a new job are indicative of the reasons why he landed the gig—his passion for sports and his effervescent personality. Opening Day is here in Baltimore, and when 3:05 p.m. rolls around, it will mean more to Wagner than an Orioles game against Minnesota (TV: MASN, WJZ; Radio: 1090 AM). Wagner—a Baltimore native and a 2003 graduate of Edgewood High School—is the new voice of Oriole Park at Camden Yards, a job he earned ahead of a group of hundreds of hopefuls during a tryout period in …
