Maverick Irwin and the team from Cromwell Valley Elementary School took home top honors.
Perry Hall youngster Maverick Irwin started playing chess just two years ago at Cromwell Valley Elementary Regional Magnet School. As a third grader, he showed promise placing fourth two years in a row at the Baltimore County chess championships. But 2013 was his breakout year. Irwin, and his team from Cromwell Valley, took home top honors at the Baltimore County chess championship. "This year, he began competing on the State chess circuit and went from being an unrated player to a United States Chess Federation player rated more than 1000," Elizabeth Irwin, Maverick's mother, explained in an email. Westminster knocked out the Gators 3-0 in Perry Hall Wednesday afternoon.

We're in the final stretch before the 138th running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Here's what you need to know. When is it? The Triple Crown race will be held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Pimlico. NBC (WRC, WBAL) and Horse Racing Radio Network (WSPZ-AM in Washington is the only area affiliate) will have the call, which will also be streaming on the radio network's website. Only softball remains in Perry Hall High School's spring post-season as of Tuesday. Perry Hall girls' lacrosse was halted Monday by Dulaney after posting two high scoring 24-2 and 17-1 victories. The Gators were ousted from the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association 4A-3A bracket 14-9. The Gators' only hope of spring silverware now comes down to softball with all other sports finished for the year. The girls entered the tournament with a first-round bye followed by a comfortable 13-0 win over Western Monday. The Perry Hall boys and girls lacrosse teams were on opposite ends of high-scoring games in the opening round of the MPSSAA regional tournaments Wednesday. The Gators beat Parkville 11-7 Tuesday, ending the season with a 6-1 record.
The Gators of Perry Hall’s Allied softball squad took a bite out of Parkville Tuesday afternoon, inching closer to a county title. Perry Hall’s 11-7 win over Parkville ended the Gators' season with 6-1 record, tying Landsdowne High School. Landsdowne’s only loss however came at the bats, balls and gloves of Perry Hall, tipping the head-to-head record in the Gators’ favor. An official winner will be named Thursday. Just two games scheduled for Wednesday stand between Perry Hall and championship season. “I thought we played well. We fielded well. We got a lot of people in who played different positions.
