Hazardous Weather Forecasted for Baltimore Metro

A wintry mix is predicted for Thursday night.

Winter storm Nemo may be pounding the New York City area with 30 inches of snow, but Baltimore metro residents are in for much milder winter weather. The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook  for central Maryland, the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay, northern Virginia and D.C. The outlook warns of a possible light wintry mix and freezing rain. Rain that may be mixed with snow and sleet is expected to fall Thursday night, and will turn to all rain after 4 a.m. Friday, according to the weather agency. Temperatures are predicted to range from a low around 34 to a high near 39. Fire and Ice: Hazardous Weather Threats in Baltimore County

Gusty winds increase wildfire threats Tuesday, while Friday could bring snow and sleet.

Oddly enough, both fire and ice are weather threats this week in Baltimore County.  On Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service released a Special Weather Statement over much of Maryland and Virginia, including Baltimore County. It warned that strong winds, between 15 and 25 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph, as well as 20 percent humidity, would result in "enhanced fire weather threat through sunset." The NWS urged people to avoid outdoor burning as it could spread wildfire.  Temperatures Tuesday are expected to reach a high near 27 degrees and dip to around 14 after dark, the NWS reported. UPDATE: Snow Less Likely Thursday in Baltimore County

The National Weather Service has downgraded its predictions for snow in Baltimore County.

UPDATE (Jan. 17, 12:54 p.m.)—The Baltimore area may have dodged 2013's first snow storm. Conditions have been significantly downgraded from earlier predictions of more than 5 inches of snow in the southern areas of Maryland.  Thursday afternoon could bring a mix of snow and rain over Baltimore County after 4 p.m. Expect a high temperature around 42 degrees and northwest winds between 3 and 5 mph. Rain and snow may continue between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. with temperatures dipping below 30 degrees, the National Weather Service reports.  A Winter Storm Watch for Howard, Anne Arundel and Queen Anne's counties and points south, including much of northern Virginia—where more than 5 inches of snow had previously been predicted—has been canceled by …

Baltimore Area Under Tornado Watch Tuesday

The National Weather Service issued the watch, which expires at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The National Weather Service has placed much of Maryland, including Baltimore, under a tornado watch. The watch lasts until 7 p.m. Tuesday. Baltimore is also under a Coastal Flood Advisory until 6 p.m. That alert changes to a Coast Flood Warning from 6 p.m. Tuesday through 2 a.m. on Wednesday, the National Weather Service said. Areas under the tornado watch include Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Montgomery and Prince George's counties, as well as Baltimore City.
