That NAtivity scene reminds me of when we went to get our Xmas tree up in Carroll County this year. The Tree Farm had a full size Nativity Scene along the road but the Three Wise men were wearing Full Firefighter turnout gear....helmets, coats.. After we cut our tree down and were getting to leave I finally asked the lady 'What's up with the Three Wise men and the firefighting gear?" She told me …   more ›

Hanukkah: Not Christmas for Jews

While the two holidays fall in close proximity to each other and are celebrated in popular culture together, Hanukkah does not hold the religious significance for Jews that Christmas holds for Christians.

Each year, Hanukkah falls in close proximity or during Christmas according to the Hebrew calendar. Because of that, the two are celebrated side by side under the “Happy Holidays” moniker. But in terms of religious significance, Hanukkah doesn’t rank as high for Jews as Christmas ranks for Christians. “It’s hard to not make a big deal of out Hanukkah living in America, and I’m not sure it’s a bad thing,” said Rabbi Rhoda Silverman of Temple Emanuel in Reisterstown. “That’s not a problem for me as long as we don’t forget about everything else that makes us Jewish.” Jonathan Schwartz, senior aide to Baltimore County Council Chairwoman Vicki Almond and a member of Temple Emanuel, sees Hanukkah as having two roles in the lives of American Jews…

It drives me crazy when people keep repeating the line ''Hanukkah is a minor holiday.'' In Israel children have off all week for Hanukkah. Orthodox Jewish schools in Baltimore have a 4 day weekend. Hanukkah is other then Purim the only holiday that traditionally doesn't have restrictions on music, travel etc. and is the last holiday historically and the only one to have happened in Israel. Animals at the Baltimore Humane Society want families this holiday season.

This is the fourth pet letter to Santa featured on Patch this week. The Baltimore Humane Society supports lost and abandoned animals in our region. It is up to us to support their life-saving efforts, so they can continue to help some of the most vulnerable members of our community. In this season of giving and all year through, please remember the fine work of BHS. Recommend this article on Facebook or post it on Twitter to help spread the word about homeless pets. Get to know another BHS resident with Miley the cat's fourth letter to Santa. Dear Santa, My last letter of the season is for my friend Wyatt. Wyatt has seen so much heartbreak and trauma in his short time on this earth. He was found in the city, with a broken knee and bite …

Perry Hall Man's Christmas Display Lights Up Neighborhood

David Eberhardt said his holiday decorations are inspiring others.

David Eberhardt is leading a revolution along Silver Farm Court—a Christmas revolution. More and more of Eberhardt's neighbors are decorating their homes for the holidays, this year more than ever, he said. "One house put up lights for the first time in five years," Eberhardt said from the front yard of his glowing Perry Hall home. "This year, I even decorated the deck. Most people around here who did their decks, they did it because I motivated them." "I'd like to be like 34th Street [in Baltimore], where people line up to come here," he added. Eberhardt's display includes several inflatable Peanuts characters, a reindeer, a snowman, thousands of LED lights, light-dripping icicles and a loop of Christmas music. Vote for your favorite …

As a resident on Silver Farm Court, we all love "Mr. Dave's" display. Even though we can see it from our windows, my girls still ask me to drive by - day or night - whenever we're in the car. Now, we just need to get my husband on board to join in next year. 34th Street - here we come!! :o)   more ›
