The volunteer firefighter who was was critically injured during the April 24 fire in Reisterstown died Thursday at Maryland Shock Trauma. His funeral is set for Sunday.
It was a horrific fire April 24 that the Reisterstown Volunteer Fire Company was called to control. Volunteer firefighter Gene Kirchner, 25, and several others were searching the home at 19 Hanover Rd., trying to find a resident because "very, very agitated residents were screaming that someone was trapped," Baltimore County Fire Chief John Hohman said during a press conference Thursday afternoon. "Gene and others, they attempted to rescue the individual," Hohman said, calling the fire "horrific." Kirchner, a nine-year veteran of the company, died on Thursday at Maryland Shock Trauma after spending eight days in critical condition. UPDATE (2:30 p.m.)--Volunteer Firefighter Gene Kirchner died Thursday afternoon at Maryland Shock Trauma, according to the Baltimore County Fire Department. The member of the Reisterstown Volunteer Fire company was critically injured April 24 while doing a search during a house fire at 19 Hanover Rd in Reisterstown. "It is with deep sorrow and regret that the Reisterstown Volunteer Fire Company announces the line of duty passing of Firefighter Gene Kirchner," according to a statement from the fire company. "Gene succumbed to his injures after an 8-day fight." Gene was a 9-year member of the fire company, and was a junior firefighter for 2 years, it states. A Perry Hall man is facing charges in connection with two Abingdon shrub fires on Tuesday.
A Perry Hall man has been charged with using gasoline to set shrubs on fire at two different places in Abingdon late Monday night. Police say John Paul Akin Jr. admitted to setting two fires—one at the intersection of MD Route 24 and I-95 and the other outside a residence not far away—because of "personal issues" and anger, according to a release from the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office. Akin, 22, of the unit block of Ripplebrook Court in Perry Hall, was charged by criminal summons Tuesday with two counts of malicious burning. UPDATE (Dec. 28. 11:24 a.m.)—A fire caused $270,000 in damage to a vacant home near Harford Road and Sunshine Avenue, north of Kingsville, early Monday morning, according to Detective Cathy Batton, a Baltimore County police spokeswoman. Firefighters responded to several calls about the fire in the 12000 block of Regwood Road in Fork, shortly after 3:30 a.m. on Dec. 26, according to a Baltimore County Fire Department report. The fire left the home "completely destroyed," Batton told Patch Wednesday morning. The cause of the fire and determining the owner remains under investigation, she said. A fire severely damaged a vacant home near Harford Road and Sunshine Avenue, north of Kingsville, early Monday morning. Firefighters responded to several calls about a fire at a single-family home on the 12000 block of Regwood Road in Fork, shortly after 3:30 a.m. on Dec. 26, according to a Baltimore County Fire Department report. The fire caused a partial collapse of the home, the report stated. One firefighter was transported from the scene by ambulance with abdominal pains, according to the report. No further information was available late Monday.
